Disclaimer:
I do not own Yu-gi-oh. Nor do I own the characters in this
story.
Author's Notes:
Man, this fanfic is taking
longer then I thought. The first duel should have been in last
chapter, but I keep cutting them short. Oh well. There's always next
time.

Chapter 5:
Millennium Eye
Tiffany stared in shock at the man before her.
"You...you're..."
The man brushed back the flips of
light brown hair that covered his face, fully revealing the
Millennium Eye. "My name is Maximus, but you can call me
Pegasus. Yes, I too possess a Millennium Item. It allows me to see
all things, such as that little outburst of yours earlier."
He
raised his hand, and the Shining Friendship card floated into his
hand. "I must say, I am disappointed in you. I had such high
hopes for you, Tiffany. I thought that surely you would be the one to
bring the true spirit of Yu-gi-oh into our world. Alas, I will have
to find someone else to bear the Millennium Puzzle."
His
words jerked Tiffany back to life. She grabbed the puzzle with both
hands and held on tightly. "What are you talking about? And how
do you know my name?"
I knew what he was talking about.
Maximus loved the game more then reality it's self. Tiffany's
outburst a moment ago had offended him greatly. Even though he still
had that ridiculous smile on his face, I knew that he must be boiling
with rage inside. He wasn't about to see the person he had chosen for
his ideal hero display a hatred to his favorite game.
The
puzzle began to squirm in her grasp, pulled by an invisible force
towards the mad man. "You are not worthy of the puzzle," he
said as he held out his hands to receive it. "I am taking it back."
The
puzzle squirmed harder, pulling Tiffany to her feet. I felt my link
to her grow weaker as her grip weakened.
"NO!"
Tiffany and I both shouted at the same time. Our spirits merged into
one, causing the puzzle to flash brightly. The surge of power acted
as a shield against the magic that had been pulling it a moment ago,
and Maximus lost his power over the puzzle.
For a moment he
looked shocked, but his smile quickly returned. "So you do have
some fire in you after all. Perhaps there is still hope for you."
Even though our spirits were merged, I was very careful not to take control of any part of Tiffany's body. I still did not want her to be completely aware of me, but I knew that if I lowered my guard, Maximus would snatch the puzzle back. Then I would most likely be banished back to the Shadow Realm.
He
sat down on the curb and began to nod to himself, as if he were
having a discussion with himself. After a few short seconds had
passed, he stood up. "Very well. I shall let you keep the puzzle on
one condition."
The card in his hand floated back to
Tiffany. She reached out cautiously and plucked the card from the
air. Close examination revealed that there were no strings attached
to it. The card really had been floating.
"You've just begun to unlock the power of the puzzle Tiffany," he continued, "but there is much that you have yet to learn. Only by dueling will you be able to fully wield its power."
His Millennium Eye flashed, and I could feel him looking at me from within the Millennium Puzzle. I could feel him reading my mind. Not Tiffany's. Mine. He was teasing me, testing to see how far I would go in hiding my presence from my host.
"There
is a tournament two days from now" he said as if nothing else were
happening. "Someone very special will be entering that duel. I want
you to enter the tournament and defeat them in a duel."
"How
will I know them?" Tiffany's voice asked carefully. I realized
that I had asked the question aloud with her voice.
Maximus
laughed. He began to fade away like some sort of ghost. "You
will know." And with that, he was gone.
"What am I
doing?" I heard Tiffany's mind wander as I slipped back into the
puzzle. "This isn't like
me..."
