Chapter 10: Terrorking's Reign
This is it, I thought. This is the end.
Shadowknight had attacked me directly, and his 2000 attack points overwhelmed my 1600 LP. I had no facedown cards and no Kuriboh to stop him. Skull had won, and the Millennium Puzzle was going to be his.
But then something strange happened. Shadowknight withdrew his sword, and my life points only dropped down to 600. The duel wasn't over.
I looked at Skull questioningly. He laughed at my expression. "Scared ya, didn't I? When Shadowknight hurts my opponent's life points, he only does have the damage he should. It's a small handicap for his high attack power."
"Then there's still a chance," Tiffany whispered softly. "I have one more chance to turn this duel around."
I looked at my hand. Two magic cards that I couldn't use stared back at me.
Come on deck, I thought desperately. Please come through for me! I need a monster to protect my life points.
I drew the card and felt Tiffany's heart skip a beat when I saw the green of a magic card. "I can still use this," she thought excitedly.
"I play Graceful Charity to draw three new cards," I announced. I picked the three cards up from my deck and discarded the two I had from before.
"All right," Tiffany thought happily when she saw the new cards, "a trap card, the Dark Magician Girl, and a Mystical Elf. That should get me back on my feet."
I smiled. "I play one card facedown and set one monster. Your turn, Skull."
Skull drew his card. His two monsters reached out to him and absorbed a good amount of his life points: Shadowknight taking 900 and Terrorking taking 500. Now we were tied at 600 LP.
But Skull didn't seem worried. In fact, he was staring at the card he had drawn and was laughing uncontrollably.
"This duel is over," he laughed. "I play the spell card Checkmate."
"Why do I get the feeling I'm not going to like what it does," I asked guardedly.
"Because you feel the terror from my Terrorking," Skull laughed. "Checkmate allows me to sacrifice my Shadowknight so that Terrorking Archfiend can attack your LP directly."
I waited until the Shadowknight had been absorbed by the Terrorking before I activated my trap card. "Waboku. Your monsters can do no damage to me this turn."
That stopped Skull's laughter cold. He glared daggers at me and told me to take my turn.
I drew a card and contemplated my next move. Skull would lose 500 LP to Terrorking Archfiend at the start of his turn, but that wasn't enough to finish him off. I could leave my Mystic Elf in Defense Mode, or I could summon the Dark Magician Girl in Attack Mode.
Either way, I knew that we were going to win.
"I need to use my Dark Magician Girl," Tiffany thought. "If I am going to have any chance at winning this duel, I need to use my Dark Magician Girl."
I decided to comply. "I place one card facedown. Then I sacrifice my facedown monster to summon the Dark Magician Girl."
The Dark Magician Girl appeared and did a little dance to show her excitement. The Terrorking Archfiend caught her I before she finished and she froze.
"Looks like your friend is a bit intimidated by my monster," Skull laughed.
"She's more then a match for him," I smiled. "Take your turn Skull."
Skull drew his card, and the Terrorking absorbed all but 100 of his LP. Still, he didn't look worried."
"It's time to finish this duel," he cried. "First, I play sparks to drop your LP. Then I equip Sword of Deep Satiated onto my Terrorking."
I gasped, and the Dark Magician Girl squealed with fright. The Terrorking had enough attack power to destroy the Dark Magician Girl and my LP.
"This is it," Skull laughed. "You have no Magic Cylinder or Waboku to save you now. This attack will finish you off."
The Terrorking charged at the Dark Magician Girl. With one last desperate gamble, I activated my facedown card.
"I'm using Graceful Dice to power up my Dark Magician Girl," I cried. A large blue dice appeared and rolled its self on the field.
Tiffany was pleading with the roll in her head. "Please work. Please work. Please work."
Sure enough, the roll landed on a six.
"No!" Skull cried out.
"Yes!" Tiffany exclaimed.
"Wahoo!" I cheered with Tiffany's voice.
With the 600 point increase to Dark Magician Girl's attack power, she destroyed Terrorking Archfiend and the last of Skull's LP.
"I can't believe it," Skull wailed. "I lost. What am I going to tell Master Maximus."
I smiled Tiffany's smile. "Tell him to be prepared, 'cause some day soon I'm going to beat him, too!"
------------------------------------
Well, there you go. Tiffany and Yami defeat another loser, and the Millennium Puzzle is safe once again.
But the tournament isn't over yet; there's still one match to go. Who will they be facing? Will it be another Shadow Duel? When will Tiffany discover the truth behind Yami?
