Author's Notes:

Alone at last. Free of the endless noise of surrounding people. No one is here to pester me or bother me. I can just kick back and take it easy. There is a distinct peace in the quietness of my home.

...

...boy, do I feel lonely. Well, as long as I have some free time, I think I'll write another chapter for my fanfic story. Let's see, now. Where was I? Oh, yeah.

Chapter 17: Power Struggle

Maximus left the train car with the girl from my past following behind. Tiffany and I were left there, too stunned to move. In her head, though, both our minds were racing.

"She can't really be from Yami's past," Tiffany reasoned to herself. "That would make her thousands of years old. Perhaps she's the reincarnation of the girl that banished Yami to the Shadow Realm."

My thoughts were somewhat different. I couldn't figure out if that was really the girl that really did banish me. She looked exactly like the girl from my dream, but I didn't trust it very much. With Maximus around, it was possible that the dream had been 'given' to me by his Millennium Eye in an effort to keep us in the tournament.

On the other hand, I couldn't risk the possibility that she really was the girl that banished me or, as Tiffany thought, some sort of ancestor. It was difficult to believe that all my time in the Shadow Realm could not amount to more then a couple of years in this world. I had to admit to myself that I remembered so little about my past, I wasn't even sure which era I had been born in.

I found myself again exploring the maze of my mind, seeking the lost answers that were hidden deep within its tunnels. A left here...a right there...and suddenly, I found myself in front of a door with her picture scribed onto it.

I couldn't believe it. "Finally, an answer to my questions." I reached forward to open the door to my memories.

"Here you are, my so-called Pharaoh!" rang out a cry from the outside world. Tiffany snapped her head around to see another Egyptian boy pointing some sort of staff at her. "It was cleaver of you to hide yourself within this host, but I recognize the familiar powers that flow from your puzzle."

"Who are you?" Tiffany asked, eying the rod nervously.

"I am Marik Ishtar, and I have come to claim what is rightfully mine: the power of the ancient pharaoh," he said proudly.

"That must be the Millennium Rod," I said to Tiffany.

"Yami?" Tiffany said with relief. "I was worried you were too deep in thought."

My essence suddenly froze. I realized that I had been on the verge of discovering the truth behind the girl with Maximus, but this Marik had distracted me.

Not wasting another moment, I began to search furiously for the room that I had discovered a few moments ago, but it was nowhere to be found.

"Stand up and face me, Pharaoh," Marik demanded, unaware of what had just transpired within the puzzle. "I shall defeat you and claim what should have been-"

"Tiffany, can I borrow your body for a second?" I asked quietly.

"By all means, please," she said nervously. "If he's anything like the Marik from the TV show, I don't want to have to face him alone."

The transformation was very quick. I had been experimenting with little extra tricks to add to the effect, but I wasn't in the mood to fool around. Marik noted the change in eyes and hair immediately.

"So this is the true soul of the Pharaoh that stands before me now," he said with triumph. "Now you shall suffer for what you have done to-"

"YOU STUPID BASTARD!" I shouted, standing up angrily. "YOU JUST BLEW OFF MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT!"

To add to the harshness of my attitude, I hit him with a powerful blast of shadow magic, throwing him into the side of the train car. The other people quickly got up and left.

Tiffany was taken aback. "Yami, what are you so angry about?"

"I had almost remembered," I replied with suppressed rage. "All my time in the Shadow Realm was spent forgetting who I was, but I was just about to remember something. Then this Marik wanna-be pops up and blows my entire chance.

Marik, meanwhile, was slowly getting up. "You dare to defy me in such a brazen manner? I shall be the one to put you in your place, Pharaoh."

I drew more shadow magic into Tiffany's body, preparing for another blast. "I don't have time to deal with you right now Marik. I've got bigger fish to fry."

In my mind, I had already decided to go after Maximus. It was irrational, but these games of his had pushed me too far. I was going to get some answers, and no one was going to stop me.

"This isn't like you, Pharaoh," Marik said with a wary smirk. "You've always been so cool and collected. Is living in a female's body perhaps messing with your mind?"

I blasted him again, this time with the intent of knocking him into unconsciousness. He crumpled onto the floor, and I turned to leave believing that I had succeeded in dealing with him.

"I...will no...be ignored..." I heard him growl behind me. Suddenly, a pain like nothing I had felt before ripped through Tiffany's body. That is to say, I knew it was pain, and a very horrible amount of it, but it didn't actually hurt me.

It took me a second too long to realize what he was doing. "Tiffany!" I cried out, reaching for her soul.

But it was too late. Marik had ripped her soul from her body. I could see it, chained to some sort of stone, floating high out of reach.

"Yami, what's going on?" she asked in fear.

"With the power of my Millennium Rod, I have pulled your soul from your body," he said with glee. "With a mere thought, I could banish you to the Shadow Realm forever."

"Let her go, Marik!" I shouted angrily. "She has nothing to do with this."

Marik looked back with a confident smirk. It was amazing how cocky he could look with such a bruised face. "If you attack me again, the force that holds her to this world could slip, and she would be lost. You have no choice but to duel me."

I whipped out Tiffany's deck from her pocket. "Fine, but if I win you have to restore her to this body unharmed."

"Agreed," Marik leered. "But if I defeat you, you must surrender the Millennium Puzzle to me."

"Maximus must not have let you watch the TV shows very much," I said knowingly. "Otherwise, you would realize the only possible outcome of challenging me to a duel."

"Your confidence will be your downfall Pharaoh," Marik retorted. He removed a deck of cards from his robe. "Let us duel!"

------------------------------------

I've always wanted to see Yami do that to the real Marik. There's so much power behind being an author. You can do whatever you want. Mwa ha ha!

Well, I'm sure you know what's coming up. Yami and Marik duel while Tiffany's soul hangs in the balance.
