Chapter Three
Sorry I updated so late! I've been really, really busy. Please read and review!
************************************************************************
Inside, the inn was crowded. Nora couldn't see Pippin and the other hobbits anywhere. A large wooden table stretched from the table to a few near by men who were drinking tankards nosily. An middle aged man with a dirty white apron slipped onto his neck was busy scrubbing the table. When he saw Nora, he looked up in surprise.
"Why hello there! Looking for some comfortable beds for a nice good rest? We have some snug ones upstairs. Nob could show you the way up-"
"No thanks Butterbur, I'm looking for a group of hobbits that I believe just entered. Could you tell me where they could be?" Nora interrupted.
Butterbur stared at her. "I don't know how you knew my name, but Mr.Underhill and some of his hobbits were sitting over there-" he pointed at a large table where Nora could see a single hobbit sitting in distress with a pint of beer clutched in one hand.
"Thanks." Nora held the cloak over her head to avoid any attention but people were staring at her anyway and many of them were muttering.
She was too busy trying to find Frodo that Nora tripped over a table leg shaking the whole thing and startling the person sitting there. Nora swung around to see who it was and to her amazement saw the one character she wished to see- Strider! Of course, Nora recognized him instantly, with the hood of his own dark green cloak held over his head and he had the dark loose, curly hair Nora was so familiar with. A few wisps of smoke escaped from his long pipe.
"Aragor- I mean, I'm really sorry I disturbed you sir, I was too distracted by-" But Nora stopped half way through the sentence. She was going to interfere in a very important scene in which Frodo would drop the Ring and Aragorn would meet him and the rest of the Fellowship from the Shire!
But where could she go? She couldn't escape outside- The Black Riders would shortly arrive and she certainly couldn't stay here... Upstairs- Nora thought quickly. She urged her feet to move and at the same time, her eyes found the stair case upstairs. Dimly, she could hear Pippin saying, "Sure I know a Baggins, Frodo Baggins. He's my second cousin once removed on his mother's side, and my third cousin twice removed on his father's side, if you follow me...."
"Pippin!"
She swung around and saw Frodo running and then tripping. But unlike the movie, when the ring fell on his finger slowly, it was just a quick movement and to Nora's horror, he disappeared.
She forced herself to go upstairs, ignoring the confusion on the ground floor. Her Elven cloak was flapping as she clambered noisily up the stairs. When she reached the top, Nora halted and looked around. She was in a long corridor with many wooden doors facing each other. A large chandelier hung at the top, giving off a large amount of light illuminating in the dark. A rough, red carpet had been laid on the floor and there was small stain that looked like tea, on it.
Nora randomly chose a room and went inside. Closing the door gently behind her, she found herself in a small cozy room, with a crackling fire at the side. A single chair was standing by a large window and a dark, green cloak had been put over. Four narrow wooden beds had been pushed into a corner and there were a few pairs of trousers and a shirt folded up on it. She realized that she must have stepped into a room already occupied. (And judging by the clothes in a corner, it must have been a group of men.) Abruptly, she heard two pairs of hurried foot steps going up the stairs and walking down the corridor. Nora froze in fear. It stopped and suddenly, the door burst open and Aragorn, sword in hand, dragging a terrified Frodo behind him came in,
Nora stood there, dumbfounded and nervous. They were looking at her, Frodo staring at her in astonishment and Aragorn, a look of surprise on his face. His cloak no longer covered his face so Nora could see his deep blue eyes.
"I'm sorry, I- I -I've come to the wrong room-" Nora trembled. She was interrupted by the Ranger.
"Haven't I seen you before?" he demanded. His hand let go of Frodo and he stared at Nora instead, frowning.
There was a silence, except for the rain beating down outside. Then-
"I accidentally bumped into you downstairs." Nora said blushing. "I'm really sorry, I should go now." She tried to get to the door, but he pulled her back.
"You're an Elf!" Aragorn said looking interested. "What are you doing in Bree?" He seemed completely distracted from Frodo, who was staring at them but didn't seem to understand what they were saying. "Speaking Elvish in secrecy." he muttered under his breath.
Nora's head was spinning. How could she speak Elvish? It must have came with being an Elf. "I came from Rivendell," she lied lamely in her new language. "Elrond sent me to go and find you."
Aragorn's eyes were startled. "Then you must know me already." he said. "I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn and you are...?"
"Thenindiel." Nora made up quickly. "Maybe I should go, you seem -"
She couldn't even finish her sentence before the door burst open again and Pippin, Merry and a puffing Sam stepped in holding candlesticks threatening. Sam gave one look at Nora and anger welled up into his eyes.
"I knew it!" he said loudly. "I knew you were some sort of spy, probably for him!" he pointed furiously at Strider.
"You can't take Frodo without putting up a fight you know!" Merry shouted. He waved a pointed part of his candlestick at her.
Aragorn laughed and switched back to the Common Tongue. "Perhaps I should introduce myself again. I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn. This is Thenindiel. The Black Riders hunt you and the so called 'Mr. Underhill', or Frodo, I believe."
Frodo gave a small glare at him and Nora kept her mouth shut. Aragorn meanwhile continued.
"Your trinket is not safe here Frodo, you must trust me, the wizard will not arrive, he is never late."
"Yeah, umm... you'll find Gandalf in Rivendell." Nora couldn't help it. But instantly, she realized it was a mistake. All of them were looking at her suspiciously, especially Frodo.
"How did you know that?" he cried. "How do we know we can trust you at all?" He glanced once at Strider, and then Nora. She noticed that one of his small hands was stuck in his waist pocket, and he was obviously fingering something inside it.
"You must. You don't have a choice now. The Enemy draws closer as I speak. Get your luggage now, and I'll move you to my room.
The hobbits were startled, but they did what they were told any way. Aragorn turned to look at Nora.
"Do you have anything I could help you carry Thenindiel?" he asked calmly.
Nora turned scarlet with embarrassment and she felt guilty at the same time. I'm not supposed to be here! she thought. I'm just messing up the whole story line just to get the ring.
"Umm.. no thanks... I didn't bring any stuff with me."
~*~
There was an unbearable screech in the night and Nora shuddered. Butterbur had come up and helped Aragorn carry the beds back down and had got another one for Nora. So far, the Ranger hadn't asked anything to her and Nora was quickly spinning up answers for anything he might say later on. He trusted her though and that made her feel even worse.
She was sitting by the window sill with him, watching the Black Riders and their horses gallop away into the night. Frodo was lying awake on his bed but Pippin, Merry and Sam were fast asleep. How am I going to take the ring? She wondered. It's an almost impossible task to do. She felt evil. She wasn't going to take the ring for herself, and she wasn't giving it to someone like Sauron. But she was still attempting to steal it anyway.
I need a distraction. she thought. I need to make sure no one's going to stop me.
"Aragorn." she said softly in Elvish.
"What is it Thenindiel?"
"I left something downstairs. I believe it was a book clad in green leather. Could you help me get it?"
"Of course." he rose and smiled at her. "Just watch them and make sure no trouble comes."
Nora nodded and he left. It was now or never. Frodo had now fallen asleep. She crept silently to his bedside table where he had left his waist coat. Nora opened one pocket and looked inside- she had found the ring. The golden surface reflected onto her face and the inscription on it shone. Nervously, she held out her index finger and touched it. The material felt cold under her fingertip. Taking a deep breath, she took it into her hand and pressed it against her palm
Nothing happened.
Nora gave a sigh of relief. It had been that simple. No harm had been done.
She escaped from the room and entered the now empty corridor.
"Adrienne!" she hissed. "I want to get out of this wish. I have the Ring!"
Nothing happened and to her horror, she could hear footsteps coming up the stairs again and a face appeared- Aragorn!
"I couldn't find it Thenindiel, someone must have taken-" He stopped abruptly. His face changed to a look of suspicion.
"What are you doing outside here?" Suddenly, his keen eyes caught the flash of gold. "What's in your hand?" Aragorn's faith in Nora was gone. His skepticism had arose instead.
Nora's mind was screaming. She broke into a run and didn't bother to look back.
"Adrienne!" she shouted panic rising in her. "GET ME OUT!"
The air around her blurred once again and she found herself in her room.
