A Ladle for the Lady

Prologue

The old purple Jinjo sat by the fire in her wooden rocking chair, a small crowd of youngsters sitting attentively around her. It seemed the only time the young Jinjos would be still was when she told them stories. A smile crossed her face, and she spoke in a soft voice, "Now, which story shall I tell tonight?"

Immediately, the children began yelling out the names of their favorite tales:

"The Bubblegloop Snake!"

"Tell the one about the Hailfire Peaks!"

"How Jinjos got their ears!"

The youngest child, however, was quiet. His tiny red arms were crossed over his pudgy stomach, and there was a scowl on his face.

"Yes, Junior?"

"We hea' all dese stowies ova' and ova'." sniffed Junior. "Why dun y'never tell us sommat new?"

The smile on the old Jinjo's face grew wider, and there was a shine in her eyes. "Very well, you young rip. Perhaps I'll tell you a new story... if you behave." She winked, and the little red Jinjo clamped his hands over his beak-like snout, grinning through it.

Sitting back, the purple Jinjo closed her eyes, savoring the warmth of the fire, and began her story:

"It was a long time ago, many years before your time, when I was young myself. Those were dark times, not peaceful like now, but there was always an adventure right around the corner..."
