Astronomy Tower

You used to sit with him on the edge of the Astronomy Tower window letting your feet dangle in the air. You liked that feeling deep in the night of the cold wind blowing in your face, the feeling that you aren't alone, that he would always be there. You're sitting there now, watching the sunset, waiting for the dinner bell to ring, and you close your eyes. It really wasn't that long ago when everything felt perfect.

You would look at him, your green eyes glistening from something he just said, and laugh at the nonsense that would come out of his mouth. He would lean close and whisper into your ear about the first years getting lost and slytherin pranks he and his friends had played and for hours you would laugh together in the tower until no excuse could get you out of detention if you were found by Filch. But you never cared how late past curfew you sat with him there. When you're with him nothing else matters, not school, not the rules you were born to follow, nothing but him.

A deep sigh leaves your mouth and you remember sitting here with him in fourth year watching the snow falling for the first time. "I hear there's someone out there for everybody." You said smiling innocently. And he looked at you, his old tired eyes knowledgeable as usually and said, "Who's your special someone, then?"You remember looking at him, into his deep blue eyes, and saying, "It doesn't matter as long as I have you." You fell in love with him that night. You fell in love with his eyes and his hair. You fell in love with his humor and smile. You fell in love with his pain, his tragic stare. For you it was always Remus, there was never anybody else.

You remember last year when he kissed you here for the first time. It was Christmas and all his friends were away for the holiday and he had to stay because of his tragic flaw. That's what you call it at least, his tragic flaw. He calls himself a monster and vile, and whenever he does you stare passionately at him. "Remus", you say, "You're no monster. You have a flaw, is all, a tragic flaw." Whenever you did that he would always take you into his arms, hold you tight, and kiss you lightly on your head. He found it hard to believe, you loving him. He was always self-conscious of your feelings for him and always trying so hard to make you know that he loved you. He would send roses and notes. He opened doors for you and trusted you around other boys. And he sat here with you, every night, listening to your pathetic problems about your pathetic life, even though his life has been one big tragedy. You were all he cared about. Your love was all he needed.

You wipe a tear out of your eye and involuntarily shiver from the wind blowing ferociously in your face. He was your special someone, you think. The one person made for you. He was the boy who loved you unconditionally, the one who would be there no matter what. You lean your head on the side of the window as a tear freezes on your cheek. He was supposed to love you forever.

Nothing lasts forever, though. Forever is a fairy tale, a dream. Forever is a figment of a person's imagination. You don't need that, you think. You don't need dreams that will never come true and promises that are empty lies. You don't need presents from an empty shell and a love that will just fade with time. You don't need him, you think, you never did. And you sit there, you're back straight, red hair bellowing in the wind, with a hard stony face staring out into the night, you don't need him, you repeat to yourself over and over again. But then you turn your head and stare at the vacant spot next to you. He's all you do need.
