He was a smooth talker, had been for years. She could tell. Any woman would fall into his bed after a few words and his charming southern smile. His looks weren't too bad either. Wild blond hair, strong, muscular body, and his face, what woman wouldn't pant at its sight? But his attitude was what threw her. So stubborn, so cruel. It was this alone that stopped her from crawling up his body and tasting his tongue again.
Kate was as sure about her feeling toward Sawyer as she was that they would get off the island tomorrow. He was an enigma, one of the most complex men she had ever met (and there had been quite a few). She still couldn't quite understand why he felt the need to be so vicious to Boone. He could be a viper in his own right, cruel and unmerciful. And yet every second she closed her eyes, Kate saw his face as he was tied to the tree. There was such a quiet desperation; she didn't believe she would ever forget it.
A voice rang out, interrupting her musings. Kate looked up to find Jack heading her way. Ah, Jack. His presence only continued to confuse her, leaving Kate to feel as though she was being pulled in two directions. Would she choose the devil or the angel? But then, why summarize the ideals of two men that she, for the most part, didn't really know?
Jack approached, looking apprehensively towards the sky. He moved somewhat jerkily, as if tension had completely taken over his body.
"Something wrong?" she questioned, trying to detect his mood.
"There's a storm coming," he stated, "looks real bad. We're trying to get everyone moved to the caves. Less chance of being hit."
Kate turned her head to the sky and was shocked at how much it had changed since she had first gotten lost in her thoughts. The horizon was covered with clouds, black and swirling, as if each were a miniature tornado. A menacing rumbling seemed to percolate through then, a warning sound of the trouble to come. The sight chilled her to the bone, which was something that happened very little in her life.
"Do you need any help?" Kate asked, slowly rising from her seat on the beach.
"No," he responded, "we've got everyone." He hesitated for a moment, looking up again at the sky. "Well, almost everyone. Sawyer refused to leave his 'home'. And I won't drag him anywhere, not with those stitches in his arm."
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me," she cried. Kate realized that Sawyer was stubborn, but this was ridiculous. "Let me go talk to him. He can't possibly be that stupid."
Jack grabbed her arm as she began to walk away. "Leave him there, Kate. He's a grown man. He can make his own decisions!"
"I won't let him die out here," she said turning back. "Let me go talk some sense into him. He's got to realize there's only so long he can be an outcast on this island."
Jack sighed in resignation. "Just get there as soon as you can, alright? I don't want anything to happen to you, just because of him."
"I'll be fine." Kate said, rolling her eyes slightly. "I'm a big girl remember. I took care of myself long before all of this, and I'll continue that long after. I'll come as quickly as possible." And with that, she headed off in the direction of Sawyer's makeshift tent.
