Chapter Three
Lily's involvementDISCLAIMER – Nope none of the characters are mine
AUTHOR NOTE – Here's chapter three, I have a plan and this chapter begins it so I hope you enjoy it. If Lily seems like a bitch then let it go, she was 15 and we know how much she hated James and Sirius. Enjoy
"Remmie are you ok you seem quiet even by your standards" Remus jumped violently at the sound of the feminine voice and looked up speaking as he did.
"What?" he said, blinking rapidly at Lily Evans as if he had never seen her before. Lily quirked an eyebrow at him before smiling at his bemused expression
"I asked if you were ok Remus" she repeated slowly, taking the tone one would take if they were speaking to a very small child, Remus ignored her tone and answered her question instantly
"I'm fine" he shifted slightly beneath her gaze and then sighed looking defeated "well maybe I'm not exactly fine" he admitted studying his fingers as if they were suddenly the most interesting thing he had ever seen. Lily massaged her temples for a second and then spoke
"And why aren't you fine? What's up?" she asked curiously, closing her potions textbook as she did. She had the feeling that this would be far more interesting then learning about the potion of eternal sleep. Remus shrugged slightly, his eyes looking more then a bit distant. He really didn't seem himself.
"It's Sirius, there's something up with him and I don't like it" he suddenly said, the words coming out in a rush. Lily looked at him in surprise. The Irish boy was normally extremely cool, never showing much emotion. He had to agitated for him to tell her so quickly and with so little prompting. Remus turned his eyes downward again, absently shifted a quill in-between his fingers
"Sirius" she repeated carefully trying to keep the dislike she was feeling from entering her voice "What's wrong with him now?" she demanded "A girl turned him down and now he's sulking and making everyone's life a misery" she snorted shaking her head, Remus gave her a half hearted glare and shrugged his shoulders
"Not that I know of Lily" he remarked, a slight stiffness in his voice "Though saying that it is Sirius Black perhaps that is it and he has just neglected to inform me of it" a look of sadness crossed his features before it disappeared as quickly as it came but not before Lily had seen it. Her eyes softened slightly as she looked at the older boy. As much as she disliked James and Sirius she couldn't help but like the Irish boy. It was always a mystery to her why Remus was such good friends with James and Sirius when they appeared to be so different; James and Sirius were known for their loud impulsive behaviour while Remus was well known for his quiet sensible nature; James and Sirius were slackers when it came to work, leaving it to the very last minute and still running circles round the rest of the year with their cleverness, Remus on the other hand had to work to maintain his top 5 in the year results, he was always studying; While James and Sirius allowed their looks and brains to influence them and allow them to become big headed and arrogantly, Remus kept things simple and never allowed himself to become conceited, regardless of all that though Lily knew that the three boys were dependant on each other. When Remus had been ill the previous month and had been taken to the infirmary during a lesson, which he collapsed in Sirius and James went mental, their worry being contagious. Lily had seen a different side to them that night, she had seen the true depth of their friendship and she couldn't help but envy them slightly. She now spoke placing her most practical voice on
"Why don't you tell me what's up with you and Sirius then?" she suggested briskly "Perhaps I can help you and give you some advice" Remus brought his head up and gave her one of the most probing looks she had every experience. It was as if he had ripped off every defence she had and was looking into her soul searching for something. Even his eyes looked different the amber colour looking more gold in the light of the library. The look melted away leaving a slightly suspicious one while he bit his lip. He looked adorable though Lily couldn't shake the vision of the other look from her mind.
"Its hard to explain without sounding stupid" he said carefully
"Well I'm not going anywhere so give it a shot, I'm sure its not stupid" he nodded
"Fine I know I can trust you Lily" he said simply, smiling at her. She smiled back a warm feeling coming over her. He trusted her. Although they had been friends before she had the feeling that he never trusted her until now. He ran a hand through his short blond hair and spoke "It seems to be me" Lily looked at him in confusion
"What seems to be you?" she asked
"Sirius's problem" he replied acting as if it was the most obvious thing "His problem seems to be me" Lily was surprised at that
"Why would Sirius have a problem with you? You're best friends"
"I wish he'd remember that" Remus remarked quite bitterly before continuing "He seems really hot and cold with me, one minute he's fine with me and everything's normal and then he'll ask me to do something, like go somewhere with him and when I say I can't because I have to study he goes and gets all moody with me and gives me the cold shoulder as if I've betrayed him someway because I want to study. He's only doing it to me not to Jamie or Pete and it's frankly pissing me off he's acting worse then a bloody woman, no offence" he said hastily at the end, giving her a sideway glance as his fair face reddened, Lily grinned waving a casual hand in his direction
"No problem" she remarked "I always thought Sirius was a bit of a woman anyway, there's no one else who'd spend 2 hours in front of the mirror trying to get one hair in place, look at Potter he looks like he's been dragged through a hedge backwards several times and he doesn't care" she laughed while Remus tried desperately to keep a straight face, his eyes twinkling merrily at the shared joke.
"What do you think though?" he asked bringing the conversation onto safer grounds, Lily tapped her chin with her quill thoughtfully
"Well Remmie there's several things that could be wrong with our dear Sirius Black. It could be…" her voice trailed off as her eyes focused on the door, more particularly the figures of James Potter and Sirius Black walking lazily in, a look of complete boredom on their faces in a way that still made them appear good looking, she resisted rolling her eyes and boldly met the pair of wandering navy blue eyes that focused on her and Remus. Remus had his back to door so he hadn't noticed the new arrivals, instead he was leaning against the wooden back of his chair, tilting it slightly with his arms crossed over his chest as he waited patiently for an answer, his eyes resolute on Lily's face. She watched as the navy eyes widened for a second before an ugly scowl came across Sirius face and an expression that looked remarkably like jealousy came to his eyes. A grin came to her face and she turned her eyes onto Remus who was beginning to look impatient "I think I actually know for certain why Sirius is treating you the way you described Remmie" she announced, Remus leaned forward with a look of interest
"Yes?" he asked eagerly, Lily smiled at him
"Oh yes I think Sirius is…."
"Hey Moony I thought you would be here" a voice suddenly said cutting Lily's sentence off, the table's occupants look up to see Sirius standing by them, Remus looked surprised before he smiled while Lily was smirking at Sirius who spared her a glare before turning to Remus his face softening slightly
"Hi Padfoot" he replied, a silence that was slightly awkward occurred before Sirius spoke again
"Have you finished studying yet? Me and James were gonna go down to the Quidditch pitch and stuff and we wanted you to come with us" he remarked running a hand through his hair as he indicated James with his thumb, James was by the door talking to another member of the Qudditch team.
"I'm not sure have we?" Remus asked turning to Lily, Lily looked thoughtful for a second before smiling sweetly, a plan forming in her head. She could tell that Sirius liked Remus in that way though she wasn't sure about Remus, but the whole situation was just too perfect for a spot of revenge against all the things Sirius had done to her in the past. Keeping her eyes on Sirius face she leaned a hand over the table and placed it over Remus's larger hand where it had been resting on the table and gave it a squeeze ignoring the startle look Remus gave her, Sirius didn't notice either as the black haired boy and the redhead had a silent battle of wills
"I'm sorry Sirius" she said "We haven't finished studying yet, there's so much too do yet that I wouldn't be surprised if we were here till late in the night. I'll send Remmie back to you once we've finished ok?" she asked innocently. Sirius dragged his eyes away from her face and instead focused on the hands that were still linked, he looked livid for a second before his face became blank. Remus pulled himself together getting over the shock of what Lily was doing and hastily took his hand away looking at Sirius with a pleading look on his face. Sirius brought his attention to his face for a second the same expression on his face before forcing a smile to his face
"Ok" he repeated looking at Lily "Of course the two of you studying late is fine" he let out a bark of laughter "Why should I care?" he asked "I'm not Remus's guardian after all, I'll just go with James. See you both later. Have fun" he turned round and stalked out of the room all his laziness gone. The pair of them watched James interrupt his talk with his friend and look after Sirius in confusion before sending them a quick look and going after the taller boy. Once they were gone Remus turned to Lily in amazement
"What was all that about?" he demanded, "You know how much James like you even if you don't like him in return. What were you trying to do? Send me to an early grave because trust me you were going about the right way of doing it" he said a stressed tone coming to his voice
"Relax and cool it Remus" Lily remarked sternly, she waited for a few minutes while the flushed cheeks turned pale again and the Irish boy looked calm "I'm asking you to trust me on this, I know what's wrong with Sirius but I don't want to tell you yet. What I'm doing and I did will help you. Just trust me ok?" Remus looked at her in open suspicion this time before his expression relaxed and he nodded
"Fine I do trust you so I'll believe you know what you'll doing" Lily smiled at him
"Good everything will be fine trust me" was all she said "Right Remmie back to potions now I believe"
