The heavens were crying.

He'd heard that said of a rainy night before though he couldn't recall from where exactly. Sad as it was, it was a fitting thing to say about it.

Cho Hakkai sighed and leaned against the wall at the cave's opening. Another rainy night for the Sanzo-ikkou. He wasn't sure how long they'd been traveling or where exactly they were. Day after day it had stormed until he was certain they were completely turned around and off course.

No towns in sight, they'd spent the last several nights taking refuge in caves or under the driest tree copses they could find. Tonight's four star accommodation was a nice cozy cave.

The storms had slacked off, but the rain remained.

He didn't hate the rain like some of his friends. A sardonic glance was spared to the blonde who'd taken refuge in the back of the cave and who seemed to be making a valiant effort at ignoring that anything outside of his damp newspaper existed. No, the rain didn't turn him into a borderline madman with a more twitchy-than-usual trigger finger.

It just made him..... sad.

"Hakkai?"

Golden eyes peered at him from just outside the circle of fire. Hakkai smiled softly at the soft voice. "Yes, Goku?"

The young man pulled a blanket closer around his shoulders before standing and coming over to join Hakkai. "Can't sleep?"

"Not tonight, it seems." He cocked his head to the side and watched as Goku settled next to him. "I thought you'd be resting, though."

With a shrug, Goku sighed and shifted restlessly. "I hate it when we have to sleep in caves. Give me the rain any day." An ancient weariness seemed to settle in his eyes, reminding Hakkai of just how old their 'youngest' companion really was.

For a moment Hakkai remained quiet and still, considering what Sanzo had told him about Goku's past. He supposed that if he'd spent five hundred years imprisoned in a cave, he'd prefer the rain as well.

His heart went out to the smaller man and he didn't even consider holding back as he wrapped an arm tightly around Goku's shoulders. "The rain will let up soon and after that it shouldn't take too long to get our course straightened out."

Goku snuggled closer and let his head rest against Hakkai. "And then we can stay in town again, right?"

"Right." It wasn't much comfort really. 'Soon' was a relative term in their lives, after all. It seemed that it was enough for Goku though. He gave a contented murmur and when Hakkai tilted his head down for a closer look, he could see a soft smile on the boyish face.

"And you'll make us something good to eat, right?"

Hakkai couldn't help but chuckle at the wheedling question, though he agreed immediately. Anything to make Goku happy again was fine by him. And really, it took so little to make Goku happy.

A promise of good food. Sitting together at the edge of a rainstorm, sharing each other's warmth.

Despite having just as much pain and misery in his past as the rest of them- if not more- Goku still managed to enjoy the simple things in life.

As Hakkai hugged his friend closer, he smiled wistfully up at the crying sky.

If only they could all find such enlightenment.

The End
