Chapter Eight
Fighter
That day was pretty low key as the couples went and did separate things. Lizzie and Gordo hung by the pool as Matt and Miranda spent most of the time talking and getting to know each other. They took a walk, ate meals, and went around the boat to watch the talent show. They didn't even see Nev or Blair. They weren't looking for them, either.
Finally, in the middle of the afternoon, Miranda and Matt went back to Miranda's room to rest before dinner.
"So," Matt said, "When's the last time you had a boyfriend?"
Miranda shrugged as she snuggled on the bed with him after taking her shoes off, "Sometime last summer, I guess."
"Are you looking forward to college?"
Miranda shrugged, "I don't know. I'm staying close to home, though."
"That is good to hear," Matt said, pulling her into a slow and gentle kiss.
"Mmm," Miranda said, feeling relaxed, "Have I told you lately how good of a kisser you are?"
"You're the one with all the talent. I learn from you."
Miranda smiled, kissing Matt on the cheek. "So," Miranda said, pulling herself on top of him, "Don't I owe you something from this morning?"
"I thought this morning was payback, though," Matt said.
Miranda shook her head playfully, "No, I'm afraid not," she smiled, leaning down and kissing his hungry lips with hers. The thing about Matt and Miranda was that they had so much bottled compassion, whether for each other or for other reasons, that moments like these allowed them to get caught up in the moment. They exchanged several kisses in those moments and Matt savored everyone of them as with each feel of her lips on his, he knew that she was feeling the same with him.
To their dismay, they were interrupted when Lizzie and Gordo walked in on them. They had just gotten back from the pool and were planning on getting ready for the evening. When Lizzie saw her two friends kissing she shrieked in horror, causing Matt and Miranda to jump and when they saw that they had an audience, quickly tried to compose themselves.
"Sorry," Gordo said, "Didn't mean to interrupt."
"It's okay," a blushing Miranda said, "We should probably get ready for dinner anyway."
Lizzie looked around. She hadn't said anything since her shriek, "Have you two been here all day?"
"No," Matt said, "Actually we just got back."
"Oh," was all Lizzie could manage to say. She was dying to show her opposition once and for all but knew deep down in her heart that it was none of her business.
"So," Gordo said, "Do you have any plans for dinner?"
Matt and Miranda exchanged looks and shrugged, "No, we don't have any plans."
"Would you like to join Lizzie and me for dinner on the deck?"
"Gordo?" Lizzie said, grabbing a hold of his arm, "I thought we agreed that tonight would just be between you and me. You know? Our first dinner as an engaged couple?"
"I'm sorry, Liz. I didn't know it was that important to you."
"Of course it is!" Lizzie said, "I want tonight to be just as memorable as last night."
Gordo looked at the other two in the room, "Do you two mind?"
"No, go ahead," Matt said.
"Yeah," Miranda insisted, "We'll be fine. We'll manage."
Lizzie looked over at Matt and Miranda and debated on whether to say something, "Hey, Miranda? What do you say you and I spend some girl time together tonight? That way you and I can plan the wedding. You are going to be the maid of honor, after all. You know that, right?"
Miranda glanced at Matt. Those two knew what Lizzie was up to. They knew that Lizzie was uncomfortable with her brother and best friend spending the night in the same room. She also knew, however, that there was probably no other way to satisfy Lizzie. They were getting on the land the next day and knew that she would have plenty of time to be with Matt then.
"Okay, Lizzie, sure," Miranda said, smiling.
Lizzie smiled, happy at what she heard.
A few minutes later, after Lizzie had to get ready and Gordo had to get ready, kicking the other couple in the hall. No worries, though, because Matt sat down on the floor and pulled Miranda to his lap and he was whispering things in her ear causing her to giggle and pretty soon Matt was tickling Miranda and Miranda was on the floor laughing, "Stop it!" she cried through her involuntary giggles.
"I can't help it," he said back and he was about to start tickling her again when he noticed a family with two young children passing them and all four of them were looking at Matt and Miranda as if something wasn't right about this scene. Little did the family know that everything was right about this scene because the two people who were on the floor were hopelessly devoted to each other and as their time spent grew, so did their feelings.
It was hard for Matt to be in the same room with Miranda and not want to touch her, to look at her, or have her lips upon his. It was like now that he was with her, he couldn't imagine what it would be like to be without her.
The same feeling went for Miranda. She never thought any guy would make her feel so weak and yet so strong at the same time. She wanted to know everything about this guy and take notes because she had a feeling that he would be around for a while. She waited for the family to pass, which in her eyes seemed like months, before she grabbed him by the shirt and pulled his lips down to hers. She was hungry for Matt. She couldn't help it and she didn't think anything was going to stop her.
So, there they were. Two bodies in the middle of a public hallway that, through a combination of lust and devotion couldn't take it anymore. This wasn't about doing the right thing and waiting. This wasn't about taking things slowly. This was about letting things happen as they did and what happened is that they fell for each other. Unofficially, the day before, after the movie, but officially, right there in the hallway.
They were caught up in their own emotions, waiting to be loved by someone and love had finally come at their doorstep with open arms. Before they could let their emotions get the best of them, however, they stopped themselves and pulled back, gazing at each other's eyes. This was it. This was what they had been waiting for all their lives.
Minutes passed, and even after Gordo and Lizzie left their rooms, neither Matt nor Miranda dared to try to go back in the room. Both of them knew that it was dangerous because something could happen. So they remained in the hallway, and finally they got up and decided to go to dinner.
They decided to eat at the Cruise snack bar, hoping to avoid the people they knew on the trip and they finished their romantic meal of chicken fingers and French fries and the question of what would they do now? After dinner was over? Would they go back to their room and snuggle? Would they take a stroll around the boat?
What about the rest of their lives? Would they be together forever?
