Chapter Sixteen

Lizzie calmed down before they left the bathroom. Lizzie hoped that Gordo wouldn't be suspicious. She wanted to tell Gordo what was going on, but at the same time, she really didn't want to let him in on anything just yet. They went back to the table and since there was really nothing left to do at the table, they agreed to split up for the day. Miranda winked at Lizzie before they parted and when they left the building, Lizzie and Gordo got a cab as Miranda and Matt decided to go for a stroll. Miranda watched her friends get into the car and then turned to Matt, hesitating, as she was thinking about how she was going to get away with getting a pregnancy test for Lizzie while distracting Matt.

Matt looked over at his sweet Miranda, "What are you thinking about so hard?"

"Nothing," Miranda said.

"Okay," he replied, "So what was it with you and Lizzie in the bathroom?"

"What do you mean?" Miranda asked, still preoccupied with her thoughts.

"I mean, what went on in there? You were in there for, like, twenty minutes. Gordo and I were running out of things to talk about. You know, I've known the guy all my life and I just realized that we really have nothing in common. The sad part is, he is about to become my brother in law."

"Well, you don't have to have anything in common with him."

"Yeah, well…" he started, until he realized that wasn't his original question, "Why were you two in there so long?"

Miranda shrugged, "Don't you think that's a rather personal question?"

"I don't know," Matt said, "I mean, is Lizzie okay? Are YOU okay?"

"Both of us are fine," Miranda said, "Don't worry about it. We started talking about something and lost track of time. Now, what do you want to do today?"

Matt sighed. He didn't buy what she was saying, but he didn't want to push the question, "I don't know. What do you want to do?"

"Want to see a movie? I mean, I have to go by the drug store later but I'm in no rush."

"Sure," Matt said, "Let's go to a movie. Why do you need to go to the drug store?"

Miranda laughed nervously, "What's with all of these personal questions?"

Matt got a little defensive, "Hey! It's just a question. You don't have to answer me if you don't want to tell me. I just thought since we were, you know, going out, that we could trust each other and everything."

"I trust you," Miranda said, feeling bad for not telling him something. She sighed. She knew this was going to bother her all day if she didn't say something, "I-" she started, but changed her mind with her excuse, "Lizzie asked me to pick her up some tampons, okay?"

Matt developed a distorted look on his face as he tried to be mature about this, "Oh?" he finally said, laughing nervously. He wished he'd never asked.

"She didn't know what she and Gordo were going to do today and she figured since I'm her best friend and you are her brother, it wouldn't be so bad."

Matt nodded, but he didn't have much to say. In fact, he wanted to change the subject, "Okay, we'll handle that later. Before we go to a movie, do you want to see about going to a local art museum or something?"

Miranda thought it was cute. He wasn't acting any more awkward about the situation than a guy her age was acting, but there was something about his reaction that attracted him even more. It was just another thing to add onto her list of the things she liked about her boyfriend. She smiled, putting her arm around the guy, "Sure, let's go to the art museum."

While Matt and Miranda went to the art museum, Lizzie and Gordo decided to spend a day at the beach. Lizzie was really nervous about whether or not she was pregnant, so to handle her nerves, she barely spoke, as she was sure if she spoke, Gordo could tell that something was up. They found a spot to sit down in and they lay out for a while. Gordo eventually fell asleep while Lizzie started listening to her CD player, trying to think of anything but babies. She was really anxious and nervous and really eager to find out what was going on. Eventually, she too, fell asleep.

After the art museum, Matt and Miranda walked to the movie theatre. There, they went to go see a movie, although they did manage to make out a little in the theatre. They hadn't run they knew all day, and they both felt like this was some sort of record. They enjoyed their time alone out in public, although Miranda was pretty sure some girl that couldn't have been older than fourteen, had her eye on Matt. This was a little awkward, but she didn't let it bother her too much. They ate a late lunch together and tried to figure out what else they could do.

Lizzie woke up with a start. She'd just had a dream that she was pregnant, after all, and Gordo decided he didn't like her anymore and left her. When she looked over at Gordo, she noticed he was sitting up and reading a newspaper. She sat up as well.

"Hey," he said, giving her a kiss on the cheek, "Hungry?"

"What time is it?"

"It's almost two."

Lizzie yawned, "How long was I asleep?"

Gordo shrugged, "about three hours."

"Wow, so do you want lunch?"

"Yeah," Gordo said, "Where would you like to eat?"

Lizzie shrugged, yawning, "Wherever is fine with me."

"Well, we can stay on the beach, go to the hotel, or go to a restaurant. You pick."

Lizzie sighed, "Okay, fine," she said, trying to concentrate on making a decision rather than having other thoughts interrupt. She wasn't doing so well, however, as she kept thinking about the anxiety she was feeling about taking this test.

"Lizzie?" Gordo said, realizing she was zoning off, "Lizzie?"

"Hmm?" Lizzie said, snapping somewhat out of it.

"Anything bothering you?"

Lizzie shook her head, "No, I'm fine. Um, why don't we go to that restaurant across the street from our hotel? I think I might have a coupon back at the hotel."

"Okay," Gordo said, gathering their things together, "I'm ready whenever you are."

Lizzie smiled, "I'm ready."

Gordo stood up and pulled Lizzie up and put his arm around her waist and they walked back to the hotel with their stuff. Lizzie got the coupon and they both went to the bathroom before they left for lunch, hand in hand.

Once they were settled at the restaurant, Gordo looked across the table at Lizzie and grinned, "So," he said, leaning forward, "I was thinking about tonight, and how I wanted us to do something special tonight with us being alone and I thought what we could do after a nice romantic dinner, we could go dancing at that nice club we saw when we were on our way to our hotel that morning."

"Dancing?" Lizzie repeated, a little surprised, "You really want to go dancing?"

Gordo shrugged, still grinning, "Yeah, why not? In fact, while you were asleep this afternoon, I called them and reserved us a seat right on the side of the dance floor. They offer wine and everything."

"But we don't drink."

Gordo shrugged, "We don't have to drink if we don't want to drink. The legal age of drinking down here is eighteen, so we can drink, but I just thought it would be cool if we did something a little different."

Lizzie smiled, nodding her head, "That should be fun. I'm looking forward to it."

After lunch, they went back to the hotel.

Meanwhile, Matt and Miranda walked around the streets a little, doing nothing in particular. When Matt suggested they go back to the hotel and relax a little before the evening, Miranda was reminded that she hadn't gotten Lizzie the pregnancy test. "Why don't you go ahead and go to the hotel? I have to run to the drugstore to get her the stuff."

"Why don't I just go with you?" Matt said, "I mean, I want some gum or something."

"Well…" Miranda said, biting her lower lip, "I'll get you the gum. Seriously, Matt, trust me! I need to do this alone. Why don't you see if Lizzie and Gordo are in their rooms and hang out with them for the next five minutes?"

Matt sighed. He had a feeling that something was going on and he was trying to decide if all of this was worth it. He finally gave in, "okay," he said, "I'll see you in our room, then."

Miranda nodded as she stopped at the drugstore near the hotel, "Thank you, it really shouldn't take me too long."

Matt walked to their hotel and headed to their room while Miranda bravely bought the test, along with some gum for Matt, and some tampons, for the rare event that Matt might need evidence. Miranda already felt paranoid enough as she bought the test. She did it, though, and started toward the hotel, sticking the test in her purse.

When she reached their floor, she knocked on Lizzie and Gordo's door, praying that Gordo wouldn't be there so she could get this over with. He was, though, as he answered the door. "Hey, Miranda."

"Hey," she said, "Is, um, Lizzie here?" she gulped.

"Yeah! I'm in here!" Lizzie yelled from the bathroom, "Um, Gordo, I don't mean to be a bother, but I'm having a slight situation in here. Do you mind going to the drug store and getting me some pads and perhaps some Midol?"

Gordo blushed and could barely look at Miranda, "Um, sure, Liz." He ducked out, leaving Miranda and Lizzie alone. Miranda closed the door, to make she was safe.

"Lizzie, I'm still here. Did you still need the test or were you just trying to get rid of Gordo? Miranda hoped it was the first one, but knowing Lizzie, she was probably just trying to get rid of Gordo.

"No, I still need the test. Do you have it?"

"Yeah," Miranda said.

"Good," Lizzie said, opening the door, "You didn't tell Matt about this, did you?" Lizzie asked, looking around.

"Nope, he doesn't have a clue."

"Good, where's the test?"

Miranda presented Lizzie with the test and Lizzie took the test and shut the bathroom door. "Do you want me to stay here with you?" Miranda offered.

"Could you? This should only take a minute."

Miranda walked over to the bed area and sat there waiting.

A minute later, Lizzie had her results. She sighed.

"How is it?" Miranda asked.

"Well, I'm glad Gordo is not here for this," Lizzie said as she opened the bathroom door and faced Miranda, "because I might need that Midol after all."

Miranda smiled and so did Lizzie and they hugged each other, "But, I thought you were on the pill, so it had to come."

Lizzie sighed, "I did, too, but then again, I did skip a few days before we left. I'll go to the doctor just in case when I get back, but right now, I am just so relieved. I am definitely not ready to be a mother."

Miranda sighed and smiled one last time before deciding she should find Matt. She handed Lizzie the tampons and hugged her and left for her room. The night would be spectacular, she thought, as she no longer had to worry about Lizzie and she could concentrate on Matt.
