Reflection of a Soldier
Eternity! How soon thou forget'th me!
Shall I be but child's castle in the sand,
Washed 'way by nonchalant waves from the sea?
Or lonely wind leaving traceless this land?
Immortality! Shalt thou pass me o'er?
Be it my doom to dwell 'mong nameless shades?
Seeking that which was lost long lives before
But in own mind where all memory's saved.
Death! Boast not that I cravenly fear thee;
Yet love thee not for I shall be stolen,
To thy barren thronedom thrall would I be,
'Til soul and body meet again both broken.
Death I can but resign to thee: my fate,
But obscurity I shall ever hate.
