Summer Rain
The summer rain poured down, plastering her hair to her face. She wiped her hand across her eyes, trying to move it out of her line of vision. She managed this just long enough to see him lunge at her. She spun, kicking out with her left foot. He saw it coming and blocked the blow. Both moved back, circling in a counter clockwise motion, each measuring the other.
This time, she made the first move, throwing a bold punch strait at him. He predictably blocked it, also throwing a punch that she blocked.
The rain was running down their necks, gluing their clothes to their bodies as they jumped into a series of blows and blocks that, had the average passerby actually passed by, would think looked like a blur.
They finally collapsed in the mud, both exhausted. She found herself laying on her back with him hovering overhead.
"We don't have to do this," she tried to convince both of them.
"Yes we do," he sighed. "And you know it."
"But, what am I supposed to do without you?" She breathed heavily.
"What am I supposed to do without you?" he mirrored. "You know they would never allow this. Allow us. If we tried to run away, disappear…"
"They would hunt us down." She finished for him.
Both went silent. He laid his head on her shoulder, breathing in the smell of her hair. God, he loved her so much it hurt. But he could never have her.
Tears ran out the corners of her eyes, mixing with the rain. She put her arms around his neck, burying her face there as well. They laid that way for a long moment, neither wanting to move. Wanting to forever be able to hold each other.
She pulled back, placing her forehead against his, and letting herself get lost in his eyes for the millionth time.
He leaned forward, capturing her lips in a last passionate embrace. His lips lingered above hers afterward for a long moment before moving to her ear.
"I'll always love you," he whispered, and then he was gone, lost forever to the night's darkness.
She lay there in the slick mud for what seemed like forever, silently crying, mourning for the love she could never have.
All around, the summer rain poured.
