Summary: He can't begin to understand everything that goes on in her mind, but some things are easier to see than others - a ficlet for the Java Junkies among us

Disclaimer: There are those who make, and some who choose to steal. I, for one, choose neither; borrowing's my deal! (In other words - I do not own Gilmore Girls)

He hasn't always felt this way about her. Maybe every other lunatic in this town would contradict him, but he knows that this feeling he has for her is something entirely new.

A smile: She was in love with Luke,

A smirk: and he was most definitely in love with her.

He used to like her in a way that sometimes led to wondering 'what if?' but never in a way that compelled him to make a move. She was intriguing, annoying, frustrating, entertaining, and a hundred other adjectives he could think of; an abstract thought but never anything concrete.

A sneer: So much for the naysayers, the one's who said it'd never work.

A frown: At least, she was pretty sure he loved her.

But now… now she is real. He doesn't know when the change took place. He can't pinpoint when she went from crazy, coffee-addicted Lorelai Gilmore to his Lorelai. That's what she is though, his Lorelai. It's not that he thinks she belongs to him; it's just that she has become a permanent fixture in his world.

A laugh: Of course he did! He'd said it and he meant it.

An eye roll: It didn't matter that they'd been in bed when he said it.

There are things he's always known about her: like her love of junk food and incessant need for caffeine, or the way she loves her kid above all else. However, he knew those things as her food supplier and handyman and friend. There was so much that he never got close enough to see.

A grin: In bed, together…

A chortle: Doing 'friendly' things…

He knows more now. He knows her sighs. He knows her kisses and her caresses; how soft her hair feels when it tickles against his chest. He knows that behind the bravado and witty banter lies a heart that craves love. He knows she dreads the silence of being alone. With each new piece of knowledge, he looks forward to what else he might discover.

A chuckle: ….more than friendly things.

A snigger: The friendliest of friendly things.

In the past, long before he realized that she was more to him than just a friend, he made an effort to keep her at arms length. As hard as she might try to worm herself into his life, he would only let her come so far.

A titter: Together.

A giggle: And she loved him.

She never gave up on him and he never gave up on her, and somehow despite everything, they found something more.

A cackle: And he knew it.

Sometimes, when things are particularly busy and he's going crazy trying to keep up with customers and orders, he'll look over and smile at the sight of her perched by the counter, coffee cup in hand.

A glower: Kirk was staring at her. It creeped her out when he did that.

A scowl: Maybe if she pulled a Luke

A snort: She'd made him run! She had the force!

She sits there in the middle of everything with a series of expressions flashing across her face and all he can do is wonder what's going on in her mind. For even when she's not talking, Lorelai Gilmore has a lot to say. He still can't follow most of it. That's half of the fun, and half of the mystery, and only one of the reasons he loves her.

A pout: Her cup was empty. Where was Luke when she needed him?

With a fresh pot of coffee, he makes his way towards her and is rewarded a smile that he knows is intended only for him. Some things have changed...

A sigh: My hero!

And some things never do.

The End.
