What is Love?
It was a drafty midsummer's eve in Jump City. The streets were quiet. The wind blew rather calmly. Street lights lit the city. And a lone titan found himself enjoying it. The titan was Robin.
He sat upon the edge of Titans Tower, looking down at the waters, reflecting upon today. Boring, uneventful today. Raven had been doing her usual meditation in her room, Cyborg and Beast Boy played video games for 9 hours straight, Starfire being her completely normal and friendly self. Everything was normal, and Robin enjoyed it that way.
But, come to think of it, nothing here was ever normal. Him, a teenage hero trained in combat and martial arts, and the other 4 titans; a shapeshifter, a bionic man, an alien and half-demon, half-human, saving Jump City on a daily basis. But not today. Today, everything was 'normal' as so it seemed.
He stared up at the sky and looked around at the stars. Starfire had showed him where some stars were, knowing because of her alien stance, but, of course, you couldn't find them. It was a clear night too; not a cloud in the sky, no rain, no snow. His silence was interrupted by someone coming up the roof stairs.
"Robin?" It was the red-headed alien, Starfire. Robin wondered what she was doing up here now. "Robin? Are you up on the roof? I must ask you a question!" He figured he couldn't keep Starfire adjourned. "I'm over here, Star," he called.
"Robin! It is good you are here," she said as she walked towards him. "I have to ask you something." Robin turned around, stood up, and said, "Shoot, Star."
"I have come to learn a new word and I am not sure I understand it"-she placed a hand on Robin's shoulder-"Robin, what is love?"
Now, Robin was of course surprised and threatened at this. "Star, don't they have love on your planet?" At this time, he was staring at her in some kind of blatant shock. "Of course they do, Robin, but I am not sure what it is. I thought that you would have known."
"Well, Star, it's kind of hard to explain." He started off uneasy, knowing he would regret this. Why did Starfire have to be so misunderstanding? I mean, no one really knows what love is, no one just asks out of the blue. But he knew if he didn't tell her, he'd sadden Starfire, and he hated to hurt his teammates.
"It's like, when, uh, you see…" He took a hard gulp. "How about if I show you." He leaned slight forward, catching the Tamaranian's mouth in his. It was a very short an awkward kiss, but their emotions sort of took over. Robin wrapped a hand around her waist, the other free, soon to be caught by Starfire's. Starfire leaned against Robin, deepening the kiss. It lasted for what seemed like an eternity, forced apart by only lack of fresh air.
Robin broke off first, stumbling slightly back. Starfire caught him and held him up. "That Star, is what love is," he said to her, smiling. They held hands as they sat down and watched the ocean rippling. They exchanged warm smiles, before Starfire lay her head down on his shoulder, sleeping peacefully.
