The First Cut is the Deepest
Chapter 12 .................... Hermione had thought about what she would like to ask Justin that whole afternoon, and the next morning, on her way to breakfast, she got her perfect opportunity.
"Justin!" she called out when she saw him start to walk into the Great Hall.
Justin turned around, and, seeing Hermione, smiled and ran up to her.
"Hey," Justin said, kissing her fully on the lips.
"Umm, not now, Justin," Hermione said, pushing him away.
Justin obviously noticed her actions and gave her a questioning look. "What's the matter?"
"Could we talk?" Hermione asked him.
"...Sure," he replied apprehensively.
Hermione led him into an empty classroom next to the Great Hall. Once they were in, Hermione locked it (hoping someone would take it as a sign to leave), and put a silencing charm around it.
"So," Justin said, "what did you want to talk about?"
Hermione was silent before she started.
"You see, it's just...did you hear about what happened to Harry yesterday?" she asked him.
"Hear about it?!" Justin said, laughing. "I 'saw' it!"
Hermione looked at him disapprovingly.
"What's so funny about it?" she said, angrily.
"You don't think Potter deserved it?! After what he did to me?! To us!"
"He deserved nothing but respect. I admit, what he did was a bit unruly, but he apologized."
"He deserved every bit of what he got, and you know it!" Justin shouted.
"How did you happen to see it, anyway?" Hermione asked, suspiciously.
"About everyone in the school saw it, 'Mione! God, get a grip on yourself!"
"Well, it just so happens that only Slytherins were there, so, try again," Hermione stated.
"And how would you know? Conversing with a Slytherin, are you?"
"So what if I am?"
"Hermione, that's dangerous!" Justin yelled.
"No! What's dangerous is breaking a whole hell-of -a-bunch of school rules, creating a polyjuice potion, and pretending to be Draco Malfoy, just to get back at Harry!" Hermione screamed, placing her hands on her hips.
Justin stared at her, shell-shocked.
"What are you talking about?" Justin asked, his poker face forgetting to hide the truth written in his eyes.
"You know what I'm talking about!" Hermione snapped at him.
They were silent for a moment before Justin spoke up again.
"You know, we're through," he said, shaking his head at her. "I don't want an insane lunatic for a girlfriend."
"That made no sense!" Hermione said as Justin walked over to the door, unlocked it, and walked out.
....................
The next few weeks came and went, but Hermione hadn't uttered a word to Draco, or to Harry, and especially about her and Justin's fight.
"Granger!" Draco yelled out, watching Hermione make her way to their Care of Magical Creatures Class. "Stop!"
But Hermione didn't stop, so Draco ran ahead of her and stopped her himself.
"Hermione!" he shouted. "I know that you've been purposefully avoiding me."
"What?" she questioned, trying to move around him.
"You know what I'm talking about."
"Really? Well, enlighten me, then."
"You got the truth out of Dutch-Reachey..."
"Finch-Fletchley," Hermione corrected him before he could continue.
"Yeah, whatever," Draco snapped, brushing by her words. "The point is that you really did get the truth out of him, didn't you?"
Hermione didn't answer.
"Well..." Draco edged her on, moving his hand in a circular motion to signify that she should get on with the answer.
"Not technically."
"Huh?" he questioned.
"You see, by the look on his face, you could 'so' tell that he really 'did' do it. He told me that I as insane, though, and then he dumped me."
"Sorry, Hermione," Draco said, sympathetically.
"No, I was planning on breaking up with him in the first place. But, you see, I didn't 'really' get the truth out of him."
"Yeah, yeah. But, we still know that he did it. Do you know what that means we have to do?"
"Tell Dumbledore?" Hermione asked sheepishly, shrugging her shoulders.
Draco sighed. "No," he said, exasperated. "It means that we have to convince Harry of it. There really isn't much Dumbledore can do without proof or a confession, and even if he gets on or both of those, the most he can do is give him a detention or two, and what does that solve?"
"Alright, I get you!" Hermione cried (no weepy tears or anything like that).
"So, when you and he are finally alone together, you try to convince him," Draco said, beginning to turn around and finish his way to class, when Hermione called him back, and he turned back towards her.
"Wait!" she shouted. "You're his boyfriend. 'You' tell him!"
"Come on, Granger. You know he wouldn't listen to me," Draco wined.
"You will never know until you try. And after you try, if he still doesn't listen, I'll help you, okay?" she reasoned.
Draco silently thought about that for a moment, before agreeing, and separately, so that no one would get suspicious, they walked to class.
....................
Draco walked into the empty classroom, working towards Hermione, who was sitting on the top of one of the desks.
"Question," he stated as he walked over to her.
"Shoot," Hermione said, motioning for him to speak, as he stepped in front of her.
"How do I get to Harry?" he asked. "Obviously I can't go into the Gryffindor Common Room. It would be, like, Would War 3 and a half!"
"You're not going into our Common Room," Hermione said, her legs swinging back and forth.
Draco looked confused. "Then how am I going to get to Harry?" he asked.
"You're not," Hermione answered casually.
"But then how...?"
"I'll make 'Harry' come to 'you'!" Hermione interrupted.
Draco smirked. "I knew you were good for 'something'," he said cheekily.
Hermione shook her head, laughing.
"So," Draco continued, "How you going to do it?"
Hermione looked up at him. "Well, I don't want to lie to Harry, but I don't think he would come if I told him the truth, so, I guess I must. But I'm not quite sure what to say to get him out of the Gryffindor Common Room. He doesn't even go down for meals anymore. Ron and I usually have to bring it up to him. So, if we need to get him out, it 'has' to be something good."
The both thought for a moment.
"Why don't we tell him that a dementor is attacking midget Weasley in a classroom on the 6th floor," Draco said, referring to Ginny. "That way, we wouldn't have to make him go far."
"Draco, that's brilliant!" Hermione said, surprised at his cleverness.
