Summary: A little prayer, a little hope... Enou and Enki.

The sun started the day by setting the horizon on fire that morning.

Both men were up before the sun fully spread its beams across the vast land. It was that day of the year again.

After a simple meal, they made their way to the tree.

The dark-haired man, tall and with a majestic air about him, took out a ribbon from his robes. He handed the ribbon gingerly over to his companion, a boy with hair of gold whose eyes spoke of years not shown on his face. He took it, a hidden gentleness in his worldly eyes.

The taller man then lifted the boy up effortlessly onto one shoulder with a strength that came with years. The boy shifted slightly until he could be sure of his balance, before reaching out a pale hand to hold onto a sturdy branch. He pulled the weary and battered year-old ribbon off it, and then wrapped the new strip of cloth around the brown surface. Securing it with a tight bow, the boy then nodded downwards, at the man whose eyes were following his every move.

At the signal, the strong weathered hands on the boy's waist tightened shortly as the man lifted him down with a heave. They stood side by side beneath the tree, eyes closed, hands clasped together at their chests, muttering soft prayers, bodies bent forward respectfully.

Then, the moment was gone.

It was time to go back.

To return to their life as Emperor and Kirin.

But they will be back next year.

Just like the past few hundred years.

Because they never gave up hope.

Maybe one day, something will come out of this prayer.

End

Extra notes:

In the world of Juuni Kokki, to have children, one ties a ribbon to a tree (called 'riboku') and pray for a child. In due time (meaning when Heaven answers the prayer), a fruit ('ranka') will grow and then drop to become a child.

However, this does not applies for emperors and empresses after they have ascended the throne. Before they become the ruler of a kingdom, they can have children, but not after they are chosen by the kirin. Kirins cannot have children. When a kirin dies, its successor will be grown on a tree (called 'shashinboku').

A/N: Those were the facts. Please correct me if I did not get them right. I had this idea a long time ago, when Haru no Uta and I were discussing how cute Enou and Enki's kid will be. (smile)

I feel a little bad for writing this, almost like giving them hope and dashing them, because it is just not possible for them to have kids. But I really love the idea of mini Enous and Enkis running about! No doubt, Enki will be shouting at them, and then hitting Enou on the head for not setting a good example for them. (smile) Maybe it is not not possible, but just that it has not happen to anyone yet. Well, if they do not lose hope, it just might happen one day. (smile)

Thanks to all who reviewed my previous fics. (smile) Please continue to be as kind and encouraging.
