She closed her eyes, waiting for death to take her.

There was nothing she could do save wait.

She had been waiting for years. Since the day she was born, she had been told that she was doomed to die.

She hated it. She hated the others for not even trying to save her. She hated that other girl for coming in where she had no place. Hated that girl for taking their attention away from her. Hated her. Hated them for falling into that stupid, pitiful girl's trap.

Akito hated Tohru, hated her own family, and hated the world.

She sat alone in her room, gazing out the open screen that overlooked one of the gardens. The air was foggy, and it smelled like rain.

Yuki was at Shigure's house, with that girl. Kyou was there, with that girl. Shigure was there, with that girl. Ritsu had spent the night, Ayame was visiting, and Hatori was going to check up because that girl had gotten a fever again. Even Hatsuharu was staying there for the night.

Akito, meanwhile, was alone.

Practically the whole Zodiac fell over each other's feet, all for that girl.

Akito gritted her teeth, watching the birds flit between the trees. No one ever asked her what she wanted. No one ever fell over someone else's feet to make her happy.

She was alone, and she was going to die alone, and what made her most angry was that not a single one of them would care because they had that girl there to make them happy.

So what if Akito was alive now? It didn't matter. She would still die, and she would die alone, utterly ignored because the rest of the family loved that stupid girl so much.

She looked down, hands clenched into fists against the floor of the house. Her feet dangled over the ledge of the floor, nearly touching the cold ground below.

"Akito?"

The door opened slightly, and Akito turned to see that Kureno was standing there, watching.

"Kureno, what do you want?" Akito grumbled. "Permission to go see that stupid girl with everyone else, I suppose?" She turned away, watching as some of the birds landed near a puddle on the ground, taking small drinks and wetting their feathers.

"Nothing of the sort," Kureno said. Akito could hear his footsteps as he approached her. He did not come into her line of sight, but she knew that he stood right behind her.

"What is it, then?"

"I thought . . . I thought you might feel a bit alone, Akito."

Akito took in a quick, sharp breath. "What do you care? What does anybody care? All they care about is that idiot girl, the one who makes all their problems go away! They hate me, and they love her, and . . ."

Akito pulled her legs up to her chest, resting her chin on her knees. "And . . . and they don't care," she finished softly.

"Akito. They do care."

"Do they?" Akito laughed. "Tell me that Yuki really cares whether I live or die! Tell me that Kyou cares! Tell me that Shigure, Hatsuharu, and Ritsu care! If they cared, they would be here! They wouldn't have deserted me. Abandoned me."

She heard a rustling of cloth as Kureno knelt. "Well, Akito . . . I care."

Akito looked back. Kureno's face was indifferent, awaiting a punishment for being so bold.

Akito, instead, turned away again. "Kureno, could you . . . could you, maybe, just hold me for a bit?"

"If that's what you want." Kureno moved closer, wrapping his arms around Akito's shoulders. Akito held on to them.

She was not deserted.
