My entry to the "Heartbreak" contest.
THE LAST GOODBYE
Three months.
Suze and Jesse always knew the clock was ticking. Madame Zara had been crystal clear about it: they would have three months all for themselves… three months to love each other and be together as any normal, young couple. Jesse would be a common twenty year old and Suze his normal eighteen year old girlfriend. When that time was over, Jesse could die again and his soul would move on…
After a lot of fighting and tears, Suze and Jesse decided to allow Madame Zara to perform the ritual that would bring Jesse back to life for said three months.
"Susannah," Jesse had said to convince her. "I know is selfish, but I've been living this half existence for more than 150 years… we both know we won't work out in the end… but I've never felt more alive than since I meet you. And I want to know what is like to touch you and kiss you… to really feel you."
Suze let herself convince.
The first thing they did once Jesse was alive again was get married. And they proceeded to act like fools in love for the next three months… they went for a long winter vacation.
Suze and Jesse enjoyed their love and time together… Surprisingly so, as the en of their time came closer, neither felt sad or angry or anything… they found themselves surrounded by a sense of ease and clam… peace.
One early spring morning, Jesse woke up very early, he let go of Suze and got dressed. Then Jesse kissed her, whispering an "I love you, querida." He left Suze sleeping peacefully and walked outside to the front porch. He breathed in, holding in the air… the last breath he would ever take… his heart stopped slowly and his body fell to the ground. His soul was being ripped apart from his body… funny, he thought, dying again should hurt more than what it did.
As his soul surrounded itself by a bright, golden light, Jesse took one last look at Suze's sleeping form. She looked happy; a warm feeling gripped him from inside by knowing he had made his wife happy…. And with that, he vanished into forever.
When Suze woke up that morning, she wasn't surprised to find Jesse gone from their shared bed, something inside told her that he was gone… it was a bittersweet feeling… but there was something that gave her enough "sweet" for her to keep on breathing. Suze pulled on a robe and walked outside… she didn't even scream when she found Jesse's body lying there, Suze just called an ambulance and hugged herself, protecting herself from her sudden loneliness.
Jesse's funeral was on the first warm day of spring. Few people went but that was alright with Suze. After everyone went home, Suze stood there for a while. She really didn't have much to worry about, Jesse's life insurance had left her quite well taken care off, but it still amazed Suze how much Jesse had worried about her future.
"I love you, Jesse." Suze said and then she walked away, patting her stomach. Suze hadn't told Jesse she was pregnant, it would have been too hard for him to leave if he had known… and now she would always have a little part of him with her… forever.
Suze took once last look at the tombstone, at its dark profile against the blue, blue sky, and cried no more; for the tombstone read:
"HERE LAYS JESSE DE SILVA. BELOVED HUSBAND AND FATHER."
The End.
