---------------------------
When she opened her eyes, there was a spider in the corner of her tent, lazily spinning a web in the morning sun.
On any other day, she would have yelped and made a grab for the nearest shoe, but today… the spider wasn't huge, but not so small that it wasn't easy to see. It was a light transparent green all over its round body. The slow work of the little creature was surprisingly calming, and she stretched languidly in her makeshift bed, registering that this was the first morning in about a week and a half that she hadn't woken with a pounding headache.
"How's it going?"
The question surprised her, as she had not once thought of herself as the type to talk to spiders. Not surprisingly, it didn't answer, only dropped an inch on a line and continued its web from there.
"Got work to do, huh? I can understand that. It seems like all that I've done since getting to this damn island is work." She paused, and smiled to herself, "Some might argue that point, but its true. Yesterday I caught my first fish. Then I had to gut and cook it." She lifted her hands and inspected them in the muted sunlight coming in through her walls. "See, I still have blood on them."
She stopped suddenly and rolled her eyes. "Great, I knew this island was going to make me crazy. Do you think talking to bugs is one of the signs? Talking to yourself probably comes next." She looked up and noticed that the spider had turned around so that its, what she assumed were, eyes were staring in her direction. "Least I won't be alone."
"SHANNON!"
It was Boone's voice shouting from outside, already tinged with a familiar annoyance. She sighed, "WHAT?" she called out.
"WE'RE GOING NOW, GET A MOVE ON."
She made a face and looked back up. "I don't suppose you have any brothers who don't think you can do anything without constant supervision?" She reached out her hand and located her shoes in the sand. "Nope, you're the independent kind aren't you? Gotta admire that."
Having got shoes on, she poked her door aside, and winced as the light and sounds of the beach assaulted her senses. Looking back over her shoulder, she smiled one last time at the little creature in the corner. "Well, if you're going to stick around, you can get started on making a mosquito net for me." The spider waved its two front legs, and she could almost hear the sarcastic reply in her mind, Yeah, I'll get right on that.
Shannon smirked.
"I didn't think so."
END.
