"Did'ya know Sara was adopted?" The question was posed, the answer earnestly sought. There was hurt and confusion in the woman's voice. "Did you even bother to see what was irking her?" She stared at him, stone-cold eyes piercing his.

"What are you talking about?" He asked, dropping his pen onto the desk.

"You saw her walk out of here. You saw the hurt and the fear in her eyes." She spoke as if to a child, and perhaps he was. "Did you even bother to ask why she was crying?" The woman pressed on, her voice pained for some reason. She felt hurt as well, hurt for Sara. "I mean, honestly, for her to go to tears at work... it's not that I know her well but her reputation does precede her. Best record for solves in either department... doesn't seem to fit her profile to get emotional at work."

"I'm... I'm still not following." Grissom said, licking his lips slowly, almost glaring at the woman who stood fixed to his doorjamb.

"I walked into the A/V room and she was in tears. This case took a toll on her."

"All of her cases take some sort of toll on her." He replied, brushing it off. He wasn't willing to have such a conversation with a near-complete stranger. His voice was cold, colder than she expected. The woman stood up straighter, obviously startled by his tone.

"You're a bastard." The woman said matter of factly, standing up rod straight, anticipating anything that he threw back at her. "You don't deserve her to begin with."

He looked shocked, completely and utterly taken off-guard.

"I don't deserve her?"

"Not... it doesn't seem like she exists to you."

"You don't understand." He said, irritated. "It's much more complicated than you make it seem. It's not all roses, there are complications that I just can't deal with. You don't understand."

"I don't? She doesn't let people touch her, and I walk in there and she fell into my arms, figuratively speaking of course. Suffice to say I was surprised, but at least I didn't push her away. If I weren't so certain that she's so far tangled up in you I might ask her out."

He looked at her, completely and utterly lost. "She's a beautiful woman, beautiful and sad. It's amazing really, how she has so much stamina after all she's been put through. It's truly amazing how much you can learn over a cup of coffee."

They both remained silent; she wanted to see if he would break.

"Such a temperamental man, pushing away the one person who doesn't care how temperamental you are. It's amusing when you think about it." She said coldly. "You want her, but when she tells you she wants you, you turn away. A sort of masochistic dance. But then again, maybe you get off on that."

He looked at her completely aghast. "You don't know anything about me."

"I know more about you than you know. I know more about her than she knows. She feels lost, but at least she let someone in." The woman smiled slightly, happy that she could help.

"She let you in." The man said in disbelief and huffed out a laugh. They barely knew each other.

"I was there." Sofia stated, walking out of Grissom's office.
