Winter in the Trees

It was cold, especially cold for the Wood of the Dyrads' winter. There was snow usually only for a few days, then it turned into slush then evaporated. But this year it was frigid. The trees bent to the cold and were actually in danger of freezing solid, the literally exploding, collapsing under their own weight.

Soon it came to that point. Two trees fell, which dropped the Dryads from the limbs above. The giant Oaks were the Dryads' life force; without them the Dryads' hearts would stop instantly. One of the two dryads was Xbel, the Dryad that had once threatened to Kill Garion. After a brief funeral to pay their respects, the Dryads returned to the trees. The winter grew colder. Several more trees froze, and then collapsed, sending more Dryads to the forest floor. One of them was Xera, Ce'Nedra's cousin.

But however cold the winter grew it could not extinguish the warmth of the dryad's hearts, for through the power of love, the dryads succeeded in keeping those who lost their trees alive until the spring. Then they all donated a bit of their life force to a new seedling and encouraged it to grow faster than in usually would over just a few months. During that irregular winter no dryads died, only fell and returned to the trees as if nothing had happened.

Author's note: I wrote this because it just came to me when I was wondering about what life would be like if we lived in Belgarion's world. Well, tell me what you think…
