Chapter one

In the streets

I can't remember the last time we kissed…I can't remember saying goodbye…All I remember is the cold and the pain…

Joseph couldn't remember a thing, all he remembered was mind numbing pain and blackness. Why was he there? He should be dead…was he dead? Was he in heaven already? He slowly opened his eyes, there was no heaven it was simply an alleyway. There was someone standing in a bright light coming from the street.

Say something anything, what was he supposed to say? He coughed a bit before a shaky voice escaped from his dry mouth "Rogue…?" Of course it was her name, the name of the one he had grown to love, and he thought she had loved him…but it had been otherwise, she had been made for Remy. She liked bad boys and that Joseph certainly was not in any way.

The figure stepped out of the blinding light and Joseph got a good look at the girl who stood before him. His jaw almost dropped to the floor. She was no more than a child, but the most innocent and pure thing he had ever laid eyes on. She had long brown hair that seemed to sweep down around her waist. She wore a pure white dress that made her look like she was a maiden from the olden days. Her eyes were wide and a sky blue, so full of curiosity and fright. No sound came from her mouth, but she bent down and touched his chest.

He grunted and sat up, he was in pain all over, everything hurt. He winced and felt his chest throb, it was hard for him to move at all, but with the girl's help he managed to stand on his own. He looked at the girl and smiled a bit, his rich masculine voice sounding out to the girl's delicate ears. "I…thank you…what is your name little one?"

The girl looked a bit pouty which made her almost all the more irresistible. She started signing and gave an exasperated sigh as he gave her a baffled look. She then searched around in a large duffle bag, which was lying beside her on the cold ground. She searched through it for a while then came across a pen and pad of paper, which she began to scribble on. She held it out to him and he read the message.

'My name is Nightingale'

Nightingale…what an odd name…she had to be a mutant, they were the only ones he knew with code names like that. He looked up at her and smiled sweetly, speaking once again. "My name is Joseph…So you can't talk?" At this she shook her head no vigorously and she took the pad back, scribbling down another note.

'My voice hypnotizes people'

Joseph was surprised that she was so open. This girl was really trusting. That sometimes was a bad thing, and he knew that for a fact. He nodded in understanding. "I'm a mutant too…I'm…somewhat of an x-man, where are we?" Once more the pad was taken from his hands and was scribbled on.

'We are in Boston'

Joseph gave a sigh of relief. It was close to the mansion. He needed to go there, he needed to find out why he was back and what had brought him there. He looked at the girl and smiled at her again. Nightingale seemed to like his smile, hers widened whenever he looked at her, but he had to keep reminding himself that she was just a child. "I…don't suppose you have a license and a car…"

Nightingale simply ginned at him.
