Chapter Nine: Departure

That evening the group spent time hanging out in the living room playing card games and talking. The next morning Tohru walked downstairs and once more saw Kagura in the kitchen making breakfast.

"Good morning Kagura!" Tohru replied brightly.

"Good morning Tohru" Kagura responded cheerfully.

"Can I help with anything?"

"Sure" Kagura smiled, "Hand me that dish over there."

"Okay" Tohru nodded, "So Shigure and them are all leaving this morning?"

"Yea. I'm getting a ride with Hatsuharu so I'll be sticking around with you guys."

"Oh great. Is Rin staying?"

"No I don't think so" Kagura shook her head with a frown, "I think she's leaving too."

"Oh" Tohru said sadly.

Outside Ayame and Shigure were packing up the car while Yuki, Hatsuharu, and Momiji watched from the porch.

"Well that's everything" Ayame replied proudly closing the trunk, "I guess we had better say goodbye" he walked up to Yuki, "Can I at least have a hug little brother?"

"Uh that would be a no" Yuki said cynically and with an angry face while Haru just grinned at his side.

"Oh please Yuki" Ayame begged.

"Beat it or I will beat you" Yuki replied with his fist clenched in front of his face.

"Uh" Ayame looked at the fist warily.

"He's right Aya, let's go" Shigure smiled with a grin, "All right you guys. You all have a safe trip back tomorrow. Haru don't drive to fast" he looked at his younger cousin.

"I won't" Hatsuharu replied.

"We'll be okay Shigure" Momiji added.

"That's good" Shigure nodded as Rin came out of the house carrying her suitcase, "Ready to go?"

"Uh huh" Rin nodded as she walked down the stairs, past a stunned Haru who's eyes became wide, "Let's go" she said as she placed her bag into the back seat and climbed in.

"Well" Shigure shrugged walking to the driver's side, "See you kids later."

"Isn't Hatori driving you back?" Yuki asked.

"No. He's riding with Akito and Kureno" Shigure replied before climbing in.

He started up the engine and then he waited till Akito's car took off first, and then followed afterwards. Hatsuharu lowered his head a bit as he walked back inside.

"Well there they go" Momiji said shielding his eyes as he watched them depart, not noticing that Yuki was paying more attention to Hatsuharu's reaction, "Now we can start having fun again."

"Yea" Yuki replied not caring either way.

Hatsuharu walked towards the stairs just as Tohru was coming out of the kitchen.

"Oh Hatsuharu" she said, "Did everyone leave already?"

"Yea they just left" he replied smiling somewhat, "What's going on?"

"Kagura and I made breakfast if you're interested?"

"No I'm not feeling to well" he shook his head.

"Oh. Can I get you anything?" she replied concerned.

"No I'm okay. I just think I need to lie down. Thanks for your concern though" he started up the stairs.

"Uh huh. Let me know if you do need anything though."

"I will."

"Hey" Kyo said as he came in from outside, "What's going on? Everyone gone?"

"Yea" Tohru nodded, "Hatsuharu is not feeling well."

"What's with him?" Kyo asked scratching the back of his head.

"My guess is Rin left. Maybe you should go talk to him Kyo" she looked at him pleadingly.

"Maybe" he nodded, "Maybe I will" he started to walk up the stairs.

"Hmm?" Tohru looked upstairs sadly and then returned to the kitchen.

Kyo knocked on the door and entered in. He saw Hatsuharu sitting on the opposite end of his bed and staring out the large glass door.

"Hey Haru you got a minute?" he called out.

"Yea what's up?" Haru asked as he came in.

"Um well. I'm no expert. But I don't think you should let it get to you."

"What are you talking about?"

"The Rin thing" Kyo said as he sat next to him.

"You're right you're no expert" Hatsuharu replied sarcastically.

"Haru come on" Kyo snarled, "If I have to be so open with you, then you have to be open with me. I think that's a fair deal."

"Huh? You got a point. I did kid of pressure you into you telling me. All right" he sighed, "I don't know what I was expecting. I let myself down really."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I gave myself false hopes" Haru stood up, "I told myself that is was possible that would be able to work it out this time. But that didn't happen, instead I made things worse. And now she's gone again. And I hate it. And I hate myself for pushing her. For trying to make her come back."

"Is that why there's a large gaping hole in our deck out back?" Kyo asked with his eyebrow raised.

"Okay I guess I got a little carried away again" Haru chuckled, "But I couldn't help it."

"I know. I guess the only advice I can give to you is the same one you gave to me a long time ago" Kyo stood up and walked over.

"What's that?"

"Is she worth the risk Haru? Does she make you happy?"

"Yes" Haru nodded.

"Then go for it and don't care what other people think. You'll hate yourself for it."

"You're throwing my words right back into my face" Hatsuharu grinned.

"Yea. Paybacks a bitch isn't it?"

They both started laughing a bit and then Hatsuharu placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You know Kyo you made me feel a whole lot better, thanks."

"Don't mention it. After all what else could I do for our little matchmaker."

"Yea" Haru grinned sheepishly, "I already know that you two got together too."

"Figured you would. I'll bet the damn rat knows too. Figures the two of you would spy on us."

"We weren't spying Kyo. Scouts honor" Haru held up his fingers.

"Mhm" Kyo said not believing him, "Well I got to go. Tohru and I are taking the kids into town to buy some watermelon and fireworks and stuff. You interested?"

"No I think I'll stay here. Maybe I'll write a song or something."

"Yea that usually cheers you up" Kyo nodded walking out the door, "Well see you later."

"Maybe it's just me" Hatsuharu thought with a smile, "But ever since he told her, his eyes hold a gentleness in them that never was there."

At the Market place Kyo and Tohru watched as Momiji and Kisa both picked out two big watermelons.

"Okay those look great" Tohru smiled, "We need one more though."

"How about you pick it out Kyo?" Momiji suggested.

"Huh? All right" he started to look.

"And while he's doing that Kisa, Hiro, and I will go look in the fireworks stand."

"Okay be careful!" Tohru called.

"We will. Come on you two!" Momiji called.

"Let's go Hiro" Kisa replied pulling his hand excitedly while he stunned followed her.

"Huh?" Kyo said out loud, "I think I get it now."

"What do you mean?"

"I understand why he was so jealous. That time, with you. He really does love her even if he is such a little guy."

"Mhm" Tohru nodded as they walked the three watermelons to the checkout counter.

"Will this be all mam" the lady behind the counter smiled.

"Oh yes. This is it" Tohru replied as Kyo put down the last watermelon.

"Oh well if you don't mind me saying this" the woman moved her spectacles around a bit, "I must say that you two are quite the handsome couple."

"Uh thanks" Kyo replied blushing.

"Are you up for your honeymoon?" she asked curiously.

"Oh no" Tohru turned red.

"No we're still in high school" Kyo retorted getting even redder.

"Oh well you're together aren't you?"

"Yea just recently" Kyo replied picking up two of the watermelons.

"Well congratulations. And have a wonderful afternoon."

"Thank you" Tohru said as she picked up the last watermelon, "Goodbye."

"Goodbye come back again!" the woman waved.

"Strange that she knew we were a couple huh?" Tohru replied.

Maybe it really is obvious to the world," Kyo added.

(Next Scene)

That evening was spent eating watermelon, playing games and finally the fireworks display which Yuki and Hatsuharu took care of. It was a two-hour show and when it was over they all went their separate ways to bed. However during it all Kyo noticed that at times Tohru seemed so sad. He lowered his head a bit and thought.

"I wonder what's on her mind now. I'll find out when we get home tomorrow."
