Disclaimer: I don't own Day After Tomorrow

Laura Chapman turned over on the couch that she was sleeping on. The room was quiet except for the crackle of the fire. She knew it was late. Everyone else was fast asleep, except her. The pain in her leg was irritating, and Laura couldn't ignore it. Turning over again, she closed her eyes and reflected on what had happened. So much had happened in the last three days. She had almost died when the tidal wave swept through the streets of New York if not for Sam. Sam… he had been so brave to go after her, and Laura couldn't hide the fact that she was falling in love with him. A rustling sound made Laura sit up. Sam was crossing over to the fireplace, as the flames were starting to flicker. Noticing Laura, he made a beeline toward her.
"Hey," he whispered as he took a seat on the couch. "Did I wake you?" Laura shook her head. "No, I couldn't sleep." There was a small silence. "Sam, what are we going to do?" Laura asked after a while.
"There's nothing we can do until my father gets here."
"And when he arrives, then what?"
"We'll go someplace safe, somewhere that's still warm."
"I've been thinking about the future. It seems so bleak now. All my life, I've been working for something that no longer exists. You were right. I was working too hard for the decathlon team."
There was a pause. "I only said that to hide the truth."
Laura sat up a little straighter. "And what truth would that be?"
Sam's heart was beating fast now, but there was no turning back. "Well," he managed, "The reason I joined the team was you."
Laura's eyes widened in surprise. She could feel herself being drawn to Sam as she murmured, "Me? What's so special about me?"
Sam's cheeks reddened. "Well, you're so smart and kind, not to mention startling beautiful. I…I like you Laura, I like you a lot. Maybe I like you so much that I love you."
Their faces were now so close that their noses almost touched. Laura smiled. "I love you to Sam," was all she managed before their mouths found each other and joined in a passionate kiss.
Sam's mind went blank. He was surprised at how right it felt to kiss Laura. He'd thought it would be awkward, but their lips seemed to be made to fit each other.
When it ended, Laura wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. Sam smoothed her thick brown hair, savoring the moment. There was nothing like a first kiss.
