The Last Stretch to Freedom

She running, heavy panting, heart racing,

Muscles aching,

Freedom is so close yet so far.

Bitter wind whips through her hair,

Her eyes watering,

She cries out in pain,

Her ankle has been wounded,

She painfully slows to a jog, step,

After step,

After step.

Searing pain stabs at the side of her body.

Blood stains her path behind.

Grimy mud clings to her sweaty knotted hair,

Tears trickle down her cheek,

She hears them. They are coming! They mustn't catch her,

She has to…keep….moving,

She staggers forward,

Willing her legs to travel onwards, they can't get her,

They can't catch ………me………….

Fog drops like a heavy blanket.

Suffocating the land,

Gaping holes which protrude dead vegetation,

Are calm like the clouds,

Hovering over the perilous undergrowth.

I step on stubbornly,

All I can hear,

I s my heart pounding,

And my steady, heavy rasping breath.

As my heart skips,

A beat.

I stumble,

I fall,

The ground rushes to meet my face,

I wince in pain,

My body slams into the mud,

Spraying waves of grime in all directions,

The moon looms above the soaring trees,

Outlining the darkness,

Sending monstrous shadows washing over the uneven forest floor,

I tremble,

I sob into my dirty, torn hands.

I gradually rise to my grazed knees and slouch over,

Gasping for pure air,

What's the point?

Why do I run from my past?

I meekly turn my head and wipe away my wet dripping hair from my bruised auburn cheeks,

I see there lights probing the forest floor behind me,

Silhouetted against the moonlight,

A shadowy figure points a cruel finger towards me,

I t calls the rest of its malevolent siblings,

They give chase.

I give a heart-filled shriek and leap to my feet,

I bite my bottom lip until it bleeds.

I am nearly there!

Nearly free,

Just a few more metres…….
