Chapter 1: Panic in Latveria

LATVERIA
MARCH 18, 18:39 CET

The day began with such promise for a peaceful afternoon, but once again, the Avengers had to take the Quinjet to stop Doctor Doom's latest scheme for world domination. They were a short distance from their official drop zone when the Quinjet began to shudder violently. At the helm of the jet, Captain America and Black Widow struggled to keep the jet in the air as the sky lit up with yellow energy beams and resounding explosions.

"Ugh, that darn Doc Doom," Captain America groaned. "When it's regular planes trying to enter Latveria, he lets them in under armed guard. But when we try to stop him from developing weapons for his take-over-the-world schemes, he tries to shoot us down without a word."

"Well, what do you expect?" replied Black Widow. "He's a tin-plated, swaggering dictator who thinks he should rule the world for the greater good of man. As if he knew anything about benefiting the people around him."

"Tell him that when we face him, Tash," said Iron Man. "Right now, we'd better drop now before Doom's gunners blow the Quinjet to bits and us with it."

"Roger that," Black Widow replied with a nod.

With that, she flew the Quinjet lower and still lower until Captain America ordered the automated computer to open the bay doors. With that, he and Iron Man and Black Widow leapt from the Quinjet, followed by Thor, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. The six heroes landed in the snow-covered forest outside of the complex where the unusual energy readings had been detected that morning. This, the Avengers knew, could only mean that some kind of new super-weapon was under construction, and Doctor Doom was doubtlessly there.

Iron Man scanned the wooded landscape for any sign of the goons who had tried to shoot them down. There was no sign of Doctor Doom's anti-aircraft gunners, but the JARVIS computer system in his armor did detect something else.

"Look sharp, you guys. We have a squad of armed bozos incoming now," warned Iron Man.

"Not one, friend Iron Man," said Thor. "I count two squads. They are combing the woodland in search of us, and I have no wish to wait until they find us here."

"Then what are we waiting here for? It's time to kick some butt!" Spider-Man quipped. And before anyone could say anything, he was swinging through the trees on his web strands. The others followed from the ground, making sure to keep out of sight of the armed guards. Then when he was over the heads of Doctor Doom's goons, Spider-Man spun a few webs that resembled weighted nets. Then as the armed guards entered his field of vision, the web-slinging hero sprung his trap.

The first squad of guards were quickly wrapped in Spider-Man's web trap, forcing the other guards to prime their laser-induced plasma cannons. They started shooting wildly into the air as Spider-Man's shadow passed overhead. Naturally, the teen hero took the opportunity to try getting a scare out of them.

"Take your best shot, Doomheads!" he chortled as he dodged every shot made at him. "Come on! You can aim better than that!"

"Your moving is a waste of good firepower, witless boy!" one guard yelled at him out of habit.

"No, it's a distraction, boys! Look!"

No sooner had Spider-Man spoke then his five colleagues leapt into action. Captain America was the first to arrive with his shield positioned for protection. He ran headlong at the armed guards without stopping and began knocking them out of his way with the efficiency of a freight train. Though some of the armed men fired on the all-American hero, their plasma shots were useless against Captain America's vibranium shield, for every burst of plasma only dissipated into vibrations.

While the squad of guards facing Captain America was engaged, Iron Man used their lack of attention to good advantage. He set his Uni-beam projectors to a power level low enough to sting without causing severe injury and then laid down some cover fire for Captain America and Spider-Man. He stung some of Doctor Doom's guards from above before he landed and got their attention. Then quick as a wink, he blasted their plasma cannons apart and then rushed them, knocking the guards out.

The second squad of guards heard the commotion and moved in to attack, but were stopped when Black Widow swung in on a towline and did a flying kick. Her aim was true and the squad leader went sailing into a tree and collapsed to the ground, unconscious. When the other guards fired on her, it took only ten seconds for Widow to utilize her "Widow's Bite" and shock the villainous henchmen senseless. She also used her "Widow's Kiss" anesthetic gas for a more peaceful method of taking her opponents down.

The other half of the second squad had already called for more aid, but they were already dealing with Thor. The Norse god of thunder hid a smile in his trimmed beard as the henchmen of Doctor Doom advanced on him, and then he let fly with his great hammer, Mjolnir, which sent the guards flying for yards and unconscious into the snow. The next few guards were blown off their feet with a blast of the hammer's lightning, and the last members of the second squad were taken down when Thor struck the ground with Mjolnir and sent them rocketing off their feet.

It seemed as though the Avengers would have an easier time getting to Doctor Doom, but that hope was dashed when more armed men showed up, this time with five battalions of enhanced tanks meant for long-range combat. But that didn't faze the Avengers, for Iron Man simply said, "Okay, Hulk. It's your show now."

Hulk replied in a disgruntled manner, "Okay. Hulk will smash stupid Doctor Doom's soldiers."

This was all he spoke, but before any of Doctor Doom's armed guards could fight back, Hulk came charging toward them at a terrifying rate. The guards and their super-tanks fired on him and did not stop until a cloud of smoke enveloped the Incredible Hulk. But when it cleared, the sinister henchmen saw that their plasma blasters and missiles had done nothing. Instead, the giant only became angry.

"HULK… SMASH!"

With that, Hulk slammed his enormous fists on the ground once and catapulted Doom's henchmen across the field. He ripped the treads off their tanks or tore the muzzles off the cannons, and some tanks were crumpled like tin cans under his great green hands. In only a few seconds, Hulk had practically torn Doctor Doom's sinister militia to heaps of unconscious guards and metallic confetti mixed with smoking tanks.

"Who will Hulk smash next?!" he rumbled while pounding his throbbing, pulsating pectorals.

"Hold on there, Hercules," joked Iron Man. "We'll smash more bad guys as soon as we sneak into Doc Doom's evil fortress. And it looks like we have our ticket in."

Iron Man was correct, for the compound where Doctor Doom's newest device was stowed was less than fifty yards away. The Avengers made their way to it without detection and found only four guards in their visibility range. Captain America crept up behind one guard and bonked him on the head with his shield. Spider-Man tied two other guards from their mouths to their ankles with his webs, and then Black Widow tripped the last guard and hoisted him up by the collar of his uniform. The guard struggled, but the Russian superheroine's grip on his wrists only tightened like a vise until he had no choice but to look at her.

Black Widow stared into the guard's eyes, focusing her mind's natural energy on the man's willpower. She said in a suggestive yet commanding voice, "You will grant us access to the bunker."

"I will grant you access to the bunker," the guard droned. With that, he fitted his hand into the scanner and then took the retinal scan, all while Black Widow kept her eye on him to make sure he didn't pull any punches on the group. The door slid open and the Avengers hustled inside right as the guard came to his senses.

Most of the guards had been taken down already since they had moved out to stop the Avengers from finding Doctor Doom, and those guards that remained were easily disarmed and strung up to await their arrest. The Avengers continued to make their way through the fortress, with Hulk breaking down each door, Iron Man disabling every security camera and bypassing Doom's alarm system, and Black Widow hypnotically forcing every guard to forget the Avengers had ever been there before knocking them out.

Eventually, they came to the main chamber of the fortress. There, they found Doctor Doom, clad in his armored suit, green cloak and all. The villain was standing before some sort of device that looked remarkably similar to a dimensional transporter that Iron Man had once planned to build in his civilian identity of multi-billionaire Tony Stark, only the one Doctor Doom had built looked more elaborate and more sinister, as though it would fire lasers to teleport victims to goodness-knows-where. The Avengers barely had time to call Doctor Doom out when he turned to face them, and Captain America could swear he was smiling under that mask.

"Ah, yes. The Avengers. The world's most powerful meddlers," smirked Doctor Doom in his arrogant manner. "I was beginning to wonder when you would break and enter."

"Cut the gab, Doom!" Iron Man cut him off. "Whatever evil plot you're concocting, it's all over! And don't give us that stupid 'you-can't-stop-me' gag either! You're clearly outnumbered, your bad guy defenses are polished off, and we're obviously too much for you to handle!"

"You fools think you can outmatch the great Victor von Doom?" the evil man taunted. "Now that I have finally achieved control of timespace transportation, my Warp Gate will finally give me what I need to finally claim the world for my own!"

The Avengers readied themselves to fight, and Captain America said, "How is a dimensional transporter going to allow you to take over the world? And try not to lie."

"You want the truth, Captain? Very well," sneered Doctor Doom. "This machine is no weapon. It's a method of getting you meddlesome interlopers out of my way permanently. You see, now that the six of you are here, I will activate the dimensional transporter to beam you right off the face of the planet. With you, the best of the Avengers disposed of, I will see to it that every nation in the world takes its place upholding only the law of Doom."

Thor gritted his teeth and said, "You are a madman, Doom, and a threat to the citizens of the world. Surrender now and we will not respond with force."

"I give the lessons in discipline here, warrior," the armor-clad menace answered, this time sounding quite irked. Then he called to his remaining guards over their comlinks, "Seize these intruders and be quick about it!"

All at once, Doctor Doom's men rushed into the room from all sides and began firing on the Avengers, but they were swiftly overpowered. Now the six heroes could focus on taking Doctor Doom, but this time, the villain put up quite a battle. He fired an ion beam from his wrist gauntlets that shut down Iron Man's suit, forcing him to duel with fisticuffs. When Captain America came at him, he managed to deflect Doom's ion ray with his shield and fought back with the aid of Spider-Man and Black Widow. But again, Doom was quick to react. His suit's energy shield protected him from Captain America's shield attacks and Black Widow's nightsticks long enough for him to hurl Spider-Man into the other two.

Thor and Hulk proved to be more of a challenge for Doctor Doom. Though his armor protected him from the worst of it, Thor's lightning attacks from Mjolnir catapulted him across the room and almost stunned him. Hulk's punches and stomps left Doctor Doom considerably dizzy, but he managed to take flight with his boot jets and then tripped Hulk so he fell upon Thor, stunning the champion of Asgard. As the Avengers rose up, they charged Doctor Doom, intending to attack him from every vantage point. But as they closed in, Doom simply activated the controls for his Warp Gate and jumped clear at the last second.

"Get clear of it! Now!" yelled Iron Man.

"Too late!" shouted Spider-Man, sounding genuinely afraid.

In an instant, the six Avengers had gone into the Warp Gate and vanished down the glowing tunnel of energy, which instantly closed behind them. The guards whom the Avengers had bested were slowly returning to consciousness, and they approached their cold, cruel master.

"Where did you send them, O grand, exalted Lord Doom?" one of his guards inquired.

"To another Earth," the tyrant answered. "One where the Avengers have never existed. I assure you they are out of the way. Now I am free to assert my rule in Latveria, in all Europe, and the world."
