"They left us…" Brooklyn choked out between thick sobs. "They really left-" How was this even possible… They were only kids! And yet the world was so cold hearted…
Kenji rushed past Darius, wailing desperately as he searched the dock."They Have to come back!" But there was no point. The boats had already shipped out and were long gone. Yasmina sunk to the floor close by, her eyes glistening with tears. "Come on!" Kenji grappled with a small walkie talkie hoping something more than static would come through. Nothing.
"Give it a rest Kenji…" Yaz hissed, massaging her swollen knee. "It's over. They're not coming back for us… they're probably glad to have got rid of us." She was right…
Sammy tried "Yaz, that's not true. They'll have to come back"
The former track star scoffed, rolling her eyes.
"What are we going to do now?" Brooklyn asked, her eyes damp with tears. "They have to come back…" She whispered out loud.
Darius kept his head down. This wasn't how camp was supposed to be. It should have never gotten this bad… it should have never left 5 teens stranded…grief stricken, injured, on a dinosaur infested island. It was supposed to be the experience of a lifetime… but this…They had already lost one camper… He could only imagine what sort of other havoc the indominus rex had caused… and now… now they need to think. They were alone… truly alone… well, sorta. At least they had one another. Well if they could consider it that. It was true they had been through it all together but that didn't make them anything more than strangers. Acquaintances at the least. The point Yaz had raised back on the monorail replayed in his head... maybe he was closer to Kenji and Brooklyn than the other two but it didn't matter anyway.
He looked to Brooklyn who sat at the edge of the dock with her legs crossed and a small pebble in hand. He couldn't lie when he first met her all he saw was a self absorbed internet brat who was a bit of a know it all… but now after everything he saw her as a courageous and brave girl who didn't surrender in the face of danger. No doubt about it he was still mad at her for the whole phone fiasco with Sammy but in the end she forgave Sammy. He thought he understood her the best out of everyone. She just wanted people to like and accept her. Brooklyn could be a bit of a handful. That was the truth. But she had a kind heart behind all that fake personality, at the end of the day. He hoped that she would always make the right decision. Still waiting for an answer she remained quiet.
Kenji locked eyes with Darius, before glancing back at Brooklyn as if to say 'are you going to tell her the truth, or do I have to?' Darius nodded his head, he would tell her… just not yet. Not like this…
Kenji was the joker and the proclaimed alpha male leader; Proclaimed by himself that is. Kenji was a goofball but he had his perks. Kenji had a silly personality and that rich kid vibe… the one that said 'hey I'm here and I'm rich so deal with it' he also knew the layout of the park better than any of them. Despite him seeming lazy and unskilled he made everyone feel slightly better and when he was needed he knew how to step up… whether it meant defending Sammy, helping Yaz, opening Brooklyn's eyes or helping him by taking some of the priorities and guiding him.
Just on cue, Sammy then checked on Kenji who was clutching Ben's stuff so tight his knuckles turned white. She was kind, good at heart even if hiding Brooklyn's phone had been wrong. Sammy was going to have to work hard to gain all of their trust, but he knew she could do it given some time, and they needed her. She was a dedicated mom friend, and had a way with animals and people alike. He already forgave her… if his family was in danger he would have done the same. He wished he could say the same for the others but that was Sammy's problem and with some hard work and determination she might still have a chance to fix things with Yaz. Yaz. She was a bit more complicated than the others, and was a mystery to him. She was the strong one; both Physically and Mentally… at least before the truth came out. She looked shattered where she sat; her right leg pulled up tight to her chest and her jacket partly covering it in an attempt to shield herself from the cold. Her left leg was stretched outwards, her hands clasping her left knee which was covered with black and blue splotches. From here Darius could hear her teeth chatter together and her teary eyes just barely visible. His heart sank deeper. If even Yaz was this broken, where did it leave the rest of them? He sighed, Sammy's lie had messed her up. It was clear she was a complete wreck whether she admitted it or not.. None of this was supposed to happen. The fact of the matter was Sammy had trampled over the other girl's trust forcing her to raise her walls again and Darius doubted she'd open up again anytime soon. He felt horrible. It was clear to him that she had trust issues prior, but Sammy's fib only made things worse. The athlete winced, pulling her hands away in pain.
"They have to." He murmured. "They're probably on their way back this very minute with another ferrie. Plus, if there were people on the ferries, it's best to get them out of here before returning for survivors." He continued to point out; but even he doubted his own words.
"We've been here for almost an hour, Darius…." Kenji signs, kicking away an empty foam cup which had once held soda. "Do you really think there going to come looking for a bunch of losey teenagers from some stupid adventure camp?" He grumbled, fiddling the straps of Ben's dork pouch. "We left Bumpy behind for no reason, we could have gone back and made sure that… that Ben is…"
"Hey, Y'all let's not think like that!" Sammy pulled away from Kenji, dusting her pants off. "We should look on the bright side."
Gasping in pain, Yaz a few feet away finally snapped, "look on the bright side… of course that's what she says in a time like this." She mocks, her brows furrowed in tight notches of contractions forced into focusing on her misshapen knee. Nothing about the injury seems natural. When she had landed on the concrete they all heard the wet slick pop. He frowns.
Suddenly Brooklyn piped up "Jesus could you not be an asshole for two fricking seconds?!" The athlete quickly whispered something under breathe while flipping Brooklyn off.
Darius couldn't do it. He felt broken; nothing could fix what had happened. Here now on the dock, the truth was finally settling in and taking its toll. They wouldn't be coming back… Not anytime soon. Yaz was right- 5 less teens in the world was all the better. Sammy sat down next to him. Her eyes were watery. He watched her, she was looking at her former friend in desperate pain and remorse. Yasmina was a wounded animal who would snap at anyone if they got too close. Deep down he knew Sammy wanted to reach out but was afraid of how the runner would react.
"She needs time." Darius leaned over whispering, "What you did really hurt her. Give her some space." Sammy struggled but managed a small nod and a weak smile. He was slightly startled when she hugged him.
"Thanks. " She whispered. "I know I messed up but I'll fix what happened." He squeezed back, his own tears threatening to work their way down his cheeks. His fingers clutched tight to the loose piece of clothing on her back. He was afraid to let go…he pulled away, using the back of his hand to wipe away fresh dripping tears.
Looking to the sky for answers, he tried. "They could send a chopper, I mean it would be the easiest way to find and hunt for survivors." Darius knew the truth; No one was coming.
"Did you forget about masarani and the pteranodons?" Kenji scowled, sitting up and throwing his hands up towards the sky. "They don't stand a chance flying over the island. Let alone landing for survivors."
"I know… I just thought maybe…" Darius sighed.
"It's getting dark." Yaz interrupts, forcing herself up onto her shaky feet. "We should find a place to holl up for the night." Even in the dim light the pain on her face was visible. She gritted her teeth as her foot barely made contact with the dock. "Besides, moping here isn't getting us anywhere."
"You're right. But now it's just determining where to go." Kenji nodded. He got up rushing over to Yaz to support her bad side, wrapping his arm around her side.
"Thanks." She grumbled. The 'I can't believe I'm expecting help from him' sort of expression was on her face.
Brooklyn adds, "We can't stay here on the dock. We're practically lambs waiting for the slaughterhouse."
"If we head into main street there's hotels- we could probably even find medical supplies." Kenji clearly gestures to Yaz.
"Seriously dude." She rolls her eyes, "I can take care of myself. Plus, wouldn't all the dinosaurs be on main street? That's where the majority of foot traffic would have been? "
"Your right…" Darius sighs.
"I mean, there's food and water on main street and maybe the phones work there? I mean uh- it's worth a shot." Pinkett shrugs.
"She has a point D." Kenji nodes, "A bed would be nice." His head fell, fiddling with Ben's stuff.
"plus… I don't think I can handle much more of Kenji's armpit stink." Yaz stuck her tongue out and fake gagged. Darius nearly laughed. He would have if the mood wasn't so grim…
"Ha, you enjoy it. I don't propose you plan on hopping all the way to mainstreet on your own?" He smirks, "Unless…"
"Ugh- Dude please stop." Yaz grimaced as she pulled away.
"How bout' I trade him out." Darius offers.
"Hey, I'm not that bad." Kenji snapped, then glanced at his armpit. Slowly he sniffed it, the revolting smell making him pull away and gag. "Oh god! You got a point!"
"No offense Kenji but I can literally smell you from over here." Brooklyn plugged her nose with a try hard grin.
