Law turned to look at his bedside clock to see that it was four in the morning. He let out a tired sigh falling back onto his bed. He stared at the ceiling above him for a moment before wiping his tears away. He knew that he wouldn't be able to fall back asleep, not after that. So even though he was tired he got up from his bed and began to move around his room grabbing some clean clothes for they day before heading out his room and making his way towards the bathroom to do his morning routine.
When Law emerged out of the bathroom his was in his day clothes with a towel on his shoulders stoping his clothes from getting wet because of his freshly washed hair. Making his way to the kitchen Law decided he wasn't in the mood to cook anything for breakfast so he opened one of the cupboards pulling out a bow before opening another to grab a box of cereal.
Pouring some cereal into the bowl Law also put a cup under his coffee maker before pressing a button. While waiting for his coffee to be ready he walked over to his fridge grabbing the milk and pouring some into the bowl. Just as he put the milk back he heard his coffee machine click letting him know his coffee was done.
Grabbing his hot coffee and bowl of cereal Law moved to sit at the kitchen island. He eat slowly as his mind ran a hundred miles per hour.
It's been years since Law remember another life, another world. Where the sea was filled with adventures, with pirates setting sail each for there own desires and dreams or even just for freedom -each was different with different reasons- with Marines that travel the seas enforcing the worlds laws, with fruits that gave you abilities at the cost of you ability to swim, with Haki which is someone's willpower or ambition.
Years since he first remembered a boy with a smile that could rival the sun, a boy that seemed to never stay down no matter how hard the world shoved him down into the ground trying to make the boy give up, but he didn't. The smiling boy never did. All he did was continue with a smile. Law could never understand how the boy did it, he still doesn't.
The boy was also reckless, uncaring of what really happened to himself which frustrated Law so much. He remembered how he'd watched the boy do anything for the ones he saw as friends -for those he cared about- he'd stop at nothing till they where save and happy. Law couldn't understand how someone could go for so much to make someone happy or just to make them safe. Being save was something that that world was not.
Law admired how the boy could turn his enemy's into allies. How no matter what he'd fight for what he believed in, for what he believed was right.
And Law missed that boy. He missed the boys bright smiles, his laugh, his happy go lucky attitude. The way his eyes would light up if someone mentioned food - a chuckle escape Law at the memory- how the boy would shot that stupid nickname he gave him. He missed it all. And he didn't know how long he could continue without the boy by his side, it had already been so long.
Nineteen years since he remembered that life. But even before that he felt like something was quite right, like something was missing and it weren't till he turned seven that he knew what was missing, it was that happy smiling boy.
But even before that, Law had lived so many years without the other in his past life. And now all the years where adding up and as the days past it got harder to cling onto what little hope he had left that he'll find the boy in this time, in this world with him. But Law couldn't see a world without the boy. He couldn't see a world where he existed without the other to him to was unfounded.
But after so long he was losing hope.
The boy had to be here in this world somewhere. He had too.
He'd seen others from his past life in this one too so he still had a little bit of hope even if he was clinging onto threats.
But even if he found the boy… would the boy even remember.
Law shook that thought out of his head. It didn't matter, he'd make him remember like he promised. And it was a promise he wasn't going to break no matter how long it took.
Finally free from his thoughts Law stood up taking his now empty bowl and cup over to the sink washing them before putting them away. He check the time and it was half five in the morning, it was still early. Law didn't have to be at work till twelve -he had an afternoon shift today- but with nothing else to do and wanting to take his mind off of Luffy Law grabbed his car keys. The hospital he worked at wouldn't mind him working earlier if anything they'd appreciate it. So with that thought Law got into his car driving off to work.
—————————————————————
Law walked through the still mostly empty halls of the hospital with another cup of coffee in his hands as he walked to his office. He was right they didn't mind that he showed up early, they usually didn't. He'd work early than most and be here till late. It gave him something to do or he'd become a prisoner of his own mind and that always ended bad, especially on today.
Law sat down at his desk his hot streaming coffee placed on the desk as he looked at the papers already on his desk. Picking up his pen Law began to read.
He singed a few papers before putting his pen down taking a sip of his coffee before looking at his schedule for the day. He had a few scheduled surgery's and a few other things he had to do before more paper work which he could do later.
And so that's what he did, he did the surgery's schedule along with two emergency surgery's one worse than the other but nothing he hasn't seen before and they definitely weren't the worse he's seen. The worse still to this day that had the lowest chance of living but some who pulled through was Luffy. Luffy's surgery was by far the worst he's ever had to do.
Law shook his head trying to clear the thoughts of Luffy. His thoughts always seeming to track back to that boy no matter how much he try's to stop it. No matter how busy he try's to keep himself.
By now it was night the sun haven't set a few hours ago but still Law sat at his desk reading paper and working on his computer putting in patient information along with other things.
It wasn't till it hit nine at night that he got up once again from his chair needing a coffee. So that's what Law did he headed out of his office and to the nearest coffee machine pulling some change out of his pocket and putting the right amount into the machine and selecting the coffee he wanted. He waited watching as his coffee was made before grabbing it and making his way back to his office sipping his coffee.
When he was almost there he heard panicked shouts and that wasn't really strange in a hospital especially in the part he was in so when he looked up to see what the ruckus was about he stopped.
They where rushing a bed with someone on. One he bed was someone with raven hair, one of his arms where hanging limp off of the edge of the bed blood dripping down it onto the floor. Blood seemed to be changing the area around them red. And it was till they got closer Law saw a scar under one of his eyes and he instantly knew who this was. He didn't even want to know how he managed to get a scar under his eyes that was exactly the same as last time but that didn't matter at the moment. What matter was that he was there bleeding out from god knows what for god knows what reason. His life was once again his Laws hands.
Luffy's life was in Laws hands once again.
Law dropped his cup of coffee not caring about at the moment. Any over time he would have cared but not now. Not when he saw how pale Luffy was. He rushed forward to help taking over from the panicked nurse who he guess was new as he hasn't saw her before. He began yelling out commands on what he needed on what those there could do to help.
And once they where in the operating room Law got to work, working fast and efficiently. The surgery took too long for Laws liking. He hated how Luffy heart rate dropped all of a sudden making him work faster. He hated how he lost Luffy for a second, hated how his heart stoped with Luffy for that moment before they managed to get it going again. It took hours before he surgery was finished, before Luffy was moved into intensive care.
And it was only then at Law let himself collapse into a chair. It was only then that Law let his hands shake. It was only then that he looked at his hands before sighing and falling back into the chair.
He'd almost lost Luffy the moment he found him and he didn't like that.
Law didn't look at Shachi when he sat in the chair next to him. He didn't turn to look at Shachi when he felt his eyes on him burning holes into him. They sat in silence for awhile before Shachi decided to brake it. "Tough surgery?" He asked looking away from Law and looking at the wall in front of them.
"You could say that" Law muttered in reply still looking down at his hands before looking up at the celling. Shachi found it strange, Law was never like this after a surgery, he was always calm, almost unbothered by the outcome, but now he looked shaken up. What had Law seen that had shaken him up so bad? They'd been pirates, they'd lived in a far worse world, they'd seen things. So what was bothering Law?
"Want to talk about it?" Shachi asked still trying to get a read of the situation his voice was calm.
Law sighed taking his hat off before running a hand through his hair. "The…" Law started but stopped when he realised he didn't know how to word it. "Luffy was the one that came in in critical condition" he told his friend his voice low and you could tell his was frustrated and a little angry at what he didn't know.
Shachi stayed silent waiting for Law to continue knowing he was going to say more. "I…we lost him for a moment in there" Law admitted clenching his hands into fists.
"He'll be fine" Shachi found himself saying trying to put Laws worries to rest. "He's strong and has been through worse. He'll get through this too"
Law huffed in frustration "that was then" he pointed out to his friend.
Shachi crossed his arms "and you really thing that just because it's a different time and different life that strawhat won't be strong that he wouldn't have trained. This is strawhat where talking about" he told him confidently shaking his head at Law as if what he said was stupid.
Okay now Law did feel stupid. It's Luffy he's talking about. The one that wouldn't stay still even when injured. That he'd only stay down for so long be jumping back up and complaining when people told him to take it easy.
It was Luffy and he's too stubborn to die.
"Thanks" Law thanked feeling the muscles he didn't even know tensed relaxed he felt lighter now, he knew Luffy would be alright that he'd get through what ever the hell happened. But Law made a mental note that if Luffy didn't remember he'll wait till he does before yelling at him for everything. For sending Law away that day. For letting the Marines kill him. For them not meeting sooner and for the circumstances of which they met again.
"No problem" Shachi replied standing up patting Law on he shoulder "you should go home and get some sleep" he told Law looking at him with a pointed look when Law went to protest.
"Don't tell me what to do" was what Law said still standing and heading to his office grabbing his things before leaving the hospital and heading for his car that was parked in the hospitals parking lot.
He opened his car door throwing his things in before getting in himself closing the door and turning the keys driving back home.
When he finally arrived home it was one in the morning and because he wasn't hungry Law just took his coat off heading straight for his bed room before kicking his shoes off before falling face first onto his bed. He was tired.
He's eyes lids where heavy and for once he didn't fight it giving into unconscious that took him.
He slept slightly better that night knowing Luffy was in fact also here.
