Steve was beside himself. He was holding Peggy's hand the whole time that Dugan was pulling the bullet out of her back. He was furious as he knew that this was absolutely unnecessary injury which was caused by nothing less than the carelessness of the soldiers of this camp. However, as he was thinking back, something like this was bound to happen. The attitude of the people in this camp towards the Howling commando was unprofessional since their arrival….
Howling commando was told that if they need a camp, the nearest to them was the one which belonged to the team of major Fred Wells. He was supposed to be quite a young man for his title which was caused not by his strengths in the field but by his friends in army office. They were also told that this particular camp caught an intelligence which was encoded and that they did not have a clue what they should do with it. Steve could hear the chuckle of Colonel Phillips when the colonel told him that he is prepared to bet on the codebreaker of Howling commando one hundred bucks. After the message he decided not to tell Peggy that there are any bets at all. He just told the commando that for a few days they may change their sleeping pads in their trucks for beds in tents and that they will join a camp at the sundown.
Steve was the first to get out of the truck and went straight into the main tent. Fred Wells rose up and made a few quick steps with his arm outstretched as he welcomed the leader of the famous Howling commando.
"Captain America! It is an honour to finally meet you. I would like you to know that we can provide you with everything you might need. I heard that there are nine men in your commando and one…" he paused for a moment "one code breaker". He exasperated vigorously. He noticed that Steve's face showed a sign of discomfort during the last words. That seemed to encourage him and he continued. "As I understand it, you could not find any other… codebreaker. If you want, I've got a few good man who would be honoured to join your team. They are well trained, strong and they will not slow you down."
Steve knit his brows, took a deep breath and answered him.
"If you say so… I need the best codebreaker in the army. He must be strong and brave."
Wells nodded and seemed to be satisfied. "We have such men captain!".
"He also needs to understand Russian."
Wells flinched a little. "Captain, I am not sure if my men really know the language. You know – since they are our enemies, nobody wanted to really learn it…".
Steve continued.
"He also needs to be able to operate without computers and without the electricity. He must know the latest codes which soviets started to use, and he must be also able to fight with weapons as well as he needs to master the art of contact fight…". He could see that Wells has nobody who would be sufficient and grimaced. "If you find anyone like this, we can challenge him with codebreaker we have in our team. But honestly, I would suggest not to waste your men – our codebreaker can send them into the hospital in few seconds.".
Major Wells stared at captain with a surprised look. He did not suppose that any men in the army would enjoy having a woman in their team. His own thoughts about women were just right for a man of 1940s. He was annoyed that women could enter the army and thought of them even less than before even though every woman in the army could prove themselves.
Steve realized that Wells had no idea that Steve knows about the encoded intelligence and continued. "Furthermore, we were sent here because our codebreaker was told to help you with the intelligence you got. After you show us our tents, I expect you to introduce your men who are trying to crack the message to Agent Carter and to help her in any possible way."
Before Wells proceeded the last message, Steve left his tent and aimed to the trucks where Howling commando was standing. Wells followed him. Eight of them were standing in a group, looking tired and curious about the camp they just entered. When Steve, closely followed by Wells, approached them, the men turned to them. "Guys, this is major Wells". Steve introduced him. The moment they stopped was the moment when the smallest member of the commando jumped out of the truck with a big book in her hand. "Found it." She said as her feet touched the ground. Wells straightened up as he finally proceeded the words, Agent Carter. His face stopped the whole commando from introducing themselves. They spotted the change in the expression of major Wells, and they did not like it at all. More surprising, however, was the reaction of Peggy. Her face showed something in between of disgust, annoyance and surprise.
"Fred?"
"Peggy. I thought that it was a joke… that you really joined the army after you cancelled our wedding".
