Chisaki Kai was just reaching out a hand to open the hallway door that lead to Eri's room when it hit him.
An almost overwhelming feeling of wrong.
It was something he recognised, to a point - it was the instinct that had allowed him to keep his yakuza together, allowed him to spot undercover policemen or heroes and which warned him away from ambushes when he first rose to power - though it had never been as intense at this.
Thinking through the possibilities, he reasoned that Eri's quick was likely going out of control (there were guards stationed everywhere in the compound; while it wouldn't be impossible to fight through them, it didn't seem possible to do so without raising the alarm).
Considering it took him using his quirk to deconstruct and reconstruct her to tame Eri's quirk, he shrugged off his instincts and opened the door; only to freeze at the sight that awaited him.
Toyama Hideki, whose quirk allowed him to create foot long bone spikes from his hands, was one of his better fighters and surprisingly competent compared to most. Yet he was pinned through the shoulder into the wall with one of his own weapons - arms clearly broken. Yet disturbingly the man seemed to still be conscious, if not lucid, and screaming soundlessly in a way that unnerved even the hardened Yakuza boss.
Chisaki quickly moved passed him, leaving him alive more out of a possible need for information than mercy after failing him, and entered Eri's room expecting to find it either empty or occupied by a hero injured from the fight with Hideki.
What he was not expecting was to find the intruder sitting next to Eri, both looking at a tablet while a video of - was that All Might's debut? - played. The intruder - who was either a young teenager, or a rather short man - was gesturing excitedly with his hands, sometimes motioning towards the video. What made the entire scene even more ridiculous was the fact that the intruder was wearing dark jeans, a dark hoodie.. and a novelty All-Might-smile mask, the kind that covered the bottom of your face with a fascimile of his iconic grin.
He vaguely noticed that despite the video playing and the intruder seeming to be explaining something, he still couldn't hear a thing. Perhaps the effect of a quirk?
Shaking himself out of his confusion, he started to remove his glove in order to get rid of this no-doubt-crazy infiltrator, but before he finished the intruder's head snapped up and Chisaki noticed their eyes; bright green, though filled with more malice than he had ever felt directed at him - it momentarily froze him in place.
Trying to regain control of his heartrate, he noticed the man kneel to talk to Eri while gesturing vaguely in his direction - what disturbed him though, was instead of the expected look of fear his presence should have caused, she merely tilted her head before nodding slowly. The man ruffled her hair in response, before finally standing and moving in his direction.
Chisaki waited until he judged the man was within easy reach - more than his dangerous quirk, he knew it was his speed in reaching opponents that often lead to victory. The moment the infiltrator took the final step, he ripped of his glove and prepared to lunge - only to make eye contact when the man's green eyes flashed.
He wasn't entirely certain what happened - one moment he was preparing to murder the arrogant fool who had invaded his base of operations, the next it felt like there was a.. stutter in time, and when it ended he was standing in the exact same spot completely unable to move.
For the first time since he adopted the moniker 'Overhaul', he felt fear. A fear born out of being completely helpless and ignorant of not only the abilities but the motives of the man standing in front of him.
The intruder took a few seconds to simply stare at him through narrowed eyes, his head tilted slightly as though he was inspecting something. Before Chisaki could attempt to speak, the man himself spoke for the first time:
"You know, in a way the two of us are like polar opposites. You despise quirks and the world they made despite being born with one of the most powerful and versatile quirks I've ever come across.. whereas I was born quirkless," the man said in a calm tone of voice yet still containing the edge of anger he had seen in his eyes, "but unlike you I've always loved quirks."
"Not just the powerful and flashy quirks either - cosmetic quirks, 'invisible' quirks and even the abilities of the so-called quirkless! See, recently I've deduced that those society deem 'quirkless' are only so in practicality, but in truth are merely unusable in most cases. Like a girl born with pyrokinesis over any fire emitted from her body yet no ability to create flames. Or a man born with the ability to easily use any quirk at it's full potential without repercussions, yet no ability beyond it. Or even someone whose quirk was the sole ability to pass that quirk onto others.."
Chisaki's eyes widened at these possible revelations; if what the man said was true then his quest to free the world from the plague of quirks was already much farther behind than he had assumed. He had to kill this man and increase the pace of his research! Eri's relation to his Boss had made him treat her too gently; he'd have to double the amount of blood tak..-
He was shocked back from his thoughts by the feeling of his breath being knocked out; it felt like someone had swung a metal bat at his chest, and yet even distracted by his thoughts as he was he would have sworn the man never moved.. a speed quirk perhaps? When his eyes stopped watering, he refocused on the man who apparently had him at his mercy only to try and recoil (his body still not responding) from the naked hatred on their face. They started pacing between Chisaki himself and where he was originally starting, ranting all the way:
"You are a despicable excuse for a human being, Chisaki Kai. Eri has one of the most remarkable quirks in recorded history and you not only abused her for it, you indoctrinated her into hating both herself and her quirk! She had nightmares for years because of the torment you put her through, and still she made me promise when I came back that I wouldn't kill you for it.."
Throughout the man's enraged shouting, Overhaul's mind was working at an insane pace - who was this man? What did he know, and how?! Then what he said, coupled with what he knew of Eri's quirk, finally allowed him to make a connection.
"You.. You're from the future?"
The man, who had been taking deep breaths in an attempt to calm down, finally coming to a stop right in front of him and spoke again:
"Yes. Though unfortunately for you, you won't be able to tell anyone.." and the man must have seen the flash of terror in his eyes, because he snorted in a dark humor before continuing: "Oh, I won't kill you. I promised Eri, and I keep my promises - I have ways of making you forget this conversation. Know this though, Chisaki Kai - that girl you've tormented for years? She is the only reason that I am not tearing off your arms and seeing if I could beat you to death with them before you'd bleed out."
Chisaki felt movement from his hands and for a moment felt exultion, sure that with his movement restored he could kill the man in front of him.. the moment lasted until he realised that his hands weren't regaining their ability to move, but that his entire body was shaking with fear - fear fuelled by the realisation that not only did the man believe himself capable of acting on his threat, he had to actively hold himself back from doing so.
"Still.. you are too dangerous to leave alone, and too cruel to go without punishment. Fortunetly for me and tragically for you Eri can't hear anything we've spoken of so far.. nor will she hear you scream now. That might be kind of traumatising for a young girl, don't you think?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Overhaul felt it - his fingers breaking one by one, followed by his arms, then his legs.. every bone in his body seemed to be shattering, reforming and shattering again. He had barely considered keeping silent so as not to give the invader what he wanted before the pain got so bad he couldn't stop screaming.
The last thing he saw before blacking out from the pain, was a pair of cold emerald eyes that seemed to shine with an inner fire.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Detective Tsukauchi Naomasa could truthfully state that he both detested and preferred working the night shift at the police station; on one hand, there was something to be said for working with Underground heroes such as Eraserhead and Huntress who were both effective and tended to be better with investigations than their Daylight counterparts.. but on the other hand, you tended to get stranger cases than you would during the day shift.
Such as a rather terrifying call from the Captain of the precinct with a tip off from one of his informants requesting an immediate meet-up at a specific location. That in and of itself wasn't that abnormal, but what had him concerned was the specific code this informant had apparently used - one that he assigned any 'tips' from All Might or Yagi Toshinori and had never given to any other informant. Furthermore he knew for a fact that Yagi was currently at U.A. meeting with Nedzu.
"Do you believe this informant is trustworthy?" a voice asked from his left, as they both stared at the empty warehouse where they were supposed to meet. Eraserhead accompanying him was a boon, as Tsukauchi trusted few heroes as much as Eraserhead when it came to critical situations.. but it was also somewhat worrisome. The informant had specifically requested Eraserhead along for the meet, and while the underground hero wasn't completely unknown.. requesting him specifically likely meant they were also aware of Eraserhead's quirk.
"I.." the detective started, gathering his thoughts, "normally trust the one who uses this code explicitly and without doubt. However, I also know for a fact that the person who used this particular code couldn't be the one to call it in. There is a chance the one I assigned it too gave it out for an emergency situation, but I'd rather be prepared for anything."
The man beside him grunted his understanding, before loosening his scarf and putting on his goggles. Tsukauchi nodded in his direction, before they both stepped out of his vehicle and headed towards the door of the warehouse - which open closer inspection was partially open.
Tsukauchi had been a detective for a long time, and as such this wasn't the first, or second or even tenth clandestine meeting he had been involved in. As long as this meeting wasn't a trap, there were certain things he expected.
Late night meet up time? Check.
Shady abandoned warehouse? Check.
Informant waiting at the opposite side of said warehouse? Check.
Informing wearing dark clothes, a hoodie and a mask? Check.
Said man currently teaching a 5-6 year old girl how to punch a man in the..
"Wait, what?!" he exclaimed before he could help himself.
At the sound of his voice, both the informant and the little girl with him turned their heads in their direction and he could feel Eraserhead's eyes glaring at the back of his skull though he refused to acknowledge them.
There was a moment of tense silence before the girl, still staring in their direction, punched at the mannequin which seemed to trigger a flashing light where it's head should be and a tinny speaker crackled:
"Arhg! I have been beaten, curse you hero!"
The man rubbed the back of his neck and let out a sheepish chuckle, while the girl suddenly turned and tried to hide behind his legs. The man seemed to shake himself from his embarrasment before picking the girl up with ease and walked in their direction.
It was at this point that Tsukauchi realised that the mask the man wore was one of those novelty All-Might-smile ones sold at Hero-Con.. the kind of mask sold to hundreds of thousands of people over the years. He was still formulating his response to the man, but the moment he stepped close enough that they wouldn't have to shout to be heard Eraserhead spoke:
"Who are you and why exactly are you trying to teach a little kid how to fight dirty in some abandoned warehouse?"
Coming to a stop about a meter and a half away from them, the informant just.. stared at them for a while. The tension seemed to grow.. until the man placed the girl down beside him and gave her a phone from one of the hoodie pockets. She seemed entirely unconcerned with her surroundings (though he noticed she sat almost against the man) and started watching a silent video on the device.
Tsukauchi took that time to observe whatever he could about the man, which wasn't much. Green eyes, possibly light black or dark green hair underneath the hoodie, shorter than both he and Eraserhead but clearly strong. There was a moment where his eyes seemed to flicker bright green, but before he could think too much on it the man spoke:
"..You can call me Kurama. I showed her where to hit someone if she needed to hurt them and get away for the same reason I arranged this meeting. For her protection."
Truth.
"What I am about to say might confuse and scare you, but I swear that I am neither your enemy nor will I share what I know with anyone else. Be logical Eraserhead, and listen to everything I say before attacking, and be patient Tsukauchi. I cannot tell you how I know what I know - but again I swear I mean you no harm."
Truth.
The detective saw Eraserhead turn his head slightly in his direction, likely looking for confirmation that the man spoke truth, and so nodded slowly.
"The girl's name is Eri, and I rescued her from the Yakuza leader Overhaul, also known as Chisaki Kai. He was using her blood in some twisted experiments - he'd take as much blood as he could every day, before simply using his quirk to destroy and recreate her body."
Truth.
He felt sick to his stomach; Overhaul was familiar to both him and Eraserhead - a truly dangerous villain who managed to stay out of prison due to his ability to tie up loose ends and almost fanatically loyal followers. He could hear Eraserhead's teeth grinding together as he tried to remain calm.
"I've.. dealt with Overhaul. He isn't dead, but I'm almost certain he wishes he was - my quirk allowed me to make him experience the pain of having every single bone in his body shatter and reform repeatedly. And it still isn't enough! He will no longer be of concern though, as he has effectively become quirkless." Kurama nearly snarled when speaking of what he did to Overhaul, and Tsukauchi felt cold.
'How does one effectively become quirkless?' he couldn't help but wonder. As did Eraserhead apparently, as he asked Kurama that very question.
"It doesn't matter, there are still many things I need to say. There are various reasons why I asked the two of you specifically to be here, beyond the fact that I trust you both completely. The other reasons neither of you trust the other with, and so I will speak to you separately - just as Eri cannot hear what we are discussing now, I will hide your secrets from each other."
He and Eraserhead shared a look, though finally shrugged it off - they trusted each other, but it was a given that everyone had secrets.
"Detective.. I'm almost uncertain where to start. Perhaps at the very beginning? I know about both One For All and All For One - I also know that All For One is still alive. He himself almost as crippled as All Might himself, but alive nonetheless."
Tsukauchi felt himself freeze for a moment after registering what Kurama had said, before gaping at the man in pure shock. Whatever secrets he thought Kurama knew, it certainly wasn't One For All!
'And that monster is somehow still alive..?'
"My apologies for just springing this on you, but it is critical that I tell you all that I know - Eri's quirk is exceptionally powerful but extensive abuse by Overhaul has lead her to both hate and fear it. She has promised me not to reveal it to anyone; her quirk is.. it is amazing. Yet her fear makes her unable to control it, which is why I plan to convince Eraserhead to take her in and care for her. I am asking you to not reveal anything about her to anyone other than All Might or those Eraserhead takes into confidence.. because make no mistake Tsukauchi Naomasa, when that little girl learns to control her quirk I'd give her 60/40 odds on beating All For One and All Might at the same time."
Tsukauchi felt years of his life fade away after hearing his quirk ping 'truth' at the end of Kurama's statement. While his quirk didn't work on hypotheticals or estimations, it could pick up on the opinions of people if they had complete confidence in their claims. He was proud of the fact that he didn't let common prejudices affect the way he did his job; he didn't believe any quirk was inherently good or evil, but that this man believed that the little girl currently swaying along to an unheard song coming from the phone could be that powerful? It unnerved him almost as much as the news that All For One was alive.
"I'll be entrusting Eraserhead and his husband to take care of the girl in the meantime, since I am not in a position to look after her myself. You may hear from me again sooner rather than later, but for tonight I have told you everything you need to know. Tomorrow a package will be delivered to the police station adressed to you - it will have an untraceable phone through which I will give you further information on anything I deem relevant at the time - you are, of course, free to ask questions of me though I cannot promise to answer. Lastly, I apologise for the sense of disorientation that will follow."
Tsukauchi had a moment to notice the man's eyes flash again - perhaps connected to his quirk? - before feeling like he was both passing out and startling awake at the same time. It was.. a strange experience. Stranger still when he noticed that Kurama had simply dissapeared, Eraserhead was now somehow holding a shy looking Eri and looking just as disoriented as he felt.
Hearing Eraserhead mumble something about needing to get back home, and figuring he needed some time himself to process everything he had heard tonight, he turned and headed back to his vehicle.
'I take it back; no amount of competent heroes can make up for the madness of the night shift.'
