Elena stared at herself in the mirror fixing her eyes on the black veins under her eyes and touched her tongue to her bloody fang. Beautiful, she thought before Bonnie burst through the door making Elena jump slightly before composing herself.
"Oh sorry, I…" Bonnies eyes dropped to the slumped over girl by Elena's feet.
"She's not dead" Elena shrugged trying not to seem bothered that her best friend was in fact, not her best friend anymore. "Here, see." She said frustrated as she bit into her wrist and fed it to the girl. "You got really drunk and had an amazing night but you will not remember me." She said with dilated eyes calmly to the girl.
"Ugh. Really Elena. This is the regular now?" Bonnie judged.
It had been 3 months of being a vampire. It changed her in ways she couldn't have anticipated. She had killed twice, on accident… she drank from the vein a couple times a week and managed to keep control. She never felt more alive than she did now. Yeah, most of the people in her life frowned upon it but hey as long as she wasn't a ripper she saw no issue. Unlike her friends.
"Come on Bon Bon. No harm, no foul." Elena smiled.
"Watch yourself Elena." Bonnie said as she turned to leave the bathroom.
She looked at herself in the mirror, tussled her now naturally wavy hair and licked the remaining traces of blood off her lip and blew herself a kiss in the mirror before walking back out to meet Damon at the bar.
Damon. She sighed slightly. Things had changed between them as well. Although they were still best friends a wedge grew between them when she tried to figure out who the new her was. She remembered back a few months to right after she turned. Elena, Bonnie and Damon had gone to a Halloween party and her and Damon had gotten such a blood high it put her in a daze. That was when she last remembered feeling the electric run through her body when they touched. He had wanted her to be better. He blamed himself and it pushed them apart.
"…..that same little birdy told me the stones were in North Carolina." Damon whispered to Stefan.
"What stones?" Elena questioned, intrigued. She could tell there was something they weren't sharing with her.
"Magic witchy stones." Damon wiggled his eye brow and fingers at Elena.
"No, really." She giggled and rolled her eyes.
"We found a way to change things Elena." Stefan leaned in sounding hopeful but carefully picking his next words.
"Elaborate." She waved lazily.
"What my brother is trying to spit out" Damon took over "is that those stones are going to work their witchy voo-doo hoo-doo magic and take us back in time so we can kill the original assholes and change history so you never die." She watched as Damon sat back in his chair fully satisfied with himself.
"Was anyone going to ask me if that's what I wanted?"
"If we can go back we can make sure no one dies." Stephan said solemnly.
"Start from the beginning." Elena insisted.
"The witches have stories about a circle of ancient standing stones in several places around the world that harness special magic. They say people are able to go through them to the past and come back with no witch. One of those places being North Carolina. Bonnie said if we can go back far enough we can stop the originals from ever becoming vampires and we can all live the lives we were meant to without all this pain and suffering." Stefan spoke quietly.
"And what makes you think you can pick and choose when you go back Stefan. Magic on its own like that isn't predicable. What if it's not meant for that." She said feeling a pit in her stomach not knowing why. "I heard stories about stones like that in Ric's class. They're meant for certain souls. Souls with a different purpose."
"Maybe, maybe not. We're doing it whether you agree with it or not."
"Sorry babe." Damon winked as they got up and threw money on the bar.
Elena grabbed Damon by the arm and waited for Stefan to walk out before speaking again.
"Damon please I have a bad feeling about this." She pleaded with him.
His eyes softened. "Elena I'm doing this for you. I love you. Even if I have to go back in time and never meet you I will do this so you can grow up, have beautiful blue eyed babies with Matt Donovan and live a boring, normal human life." He said passionately as he softly pulled his arm away. Elena couldn't help but let her jaw drop. How had she missed that Damon still loved her.
"I'm coming with."
