Chp: The meaning of will…
"Person or creature thinking."
'Person or creature thinking.'
There are certain things in this world that never change. The sun shall rise, the world shall turn, and it cares not for those who inhabit it. Death comes for all. Not even the great huntsman, Andrew Arc was immune to that. The quiet, atmosphere of the graveyard made the gathered friends and family of the fallen huntsman, feel that much sadder. The sobs of his wife, Maria Arc, the sobs of his daughters, and the quiet pensive look of his son was the faces of those he left behind. The blonde and black haired family stares at the engraved headstone holding their now late patriarch.
The last of the family friends, leave the family to their grieving. The grey haired headmaster of Beacon academy, Ozpin, says a quiet prayer for his old friend. His trusted assistant, Glynda, frowns and dabs her eyes with a small handkerchief. She and Andrew were close friends during their time in Beacon as young students; so his death had hit her hard. His eyes close in on the now sole male of the Arc family.
Jaune, was the lads name, if his memory served him correct. He had inherited his fathers trademark blond hair, but silver and black strands shine in the dulling light. His face resembled more of his mothers, the soft cheeks and face coming out strong in him. But he held a certain sharpness to the face, that gave him a slightly exotic look in comparison to the rougher edges of other Valean people. The black suit he wore contrasted with his hair and absolutely stunning blue eyes. Though if one was to stare into them, they would see lines of red and black striking through them.
The boy was oddly…emotionless during the whole funeral. Not a single tear shed, not a single small sob…..simply nothing. He had simply thought that the death of his father not him yet but even during the procession, he had simply stared ahead; a neutral smile on his face. Even now, when his mother and sisters clung to each other, he simply stared down at the grave. Minutes pass; Maria standing up and bringing the younger girls with her. She calms her tears, grabbing their hands in a gentle grip and start their slow walk to the family home. The oldest daughters glance at Jaune, turning and nodding at their mother when she glanced back. Even with a tear stricken face, Maria Arc still cut an imposing but stunning figure.
Black hair and beautiful light red eyes stare at her son with an unreadable expression. She was tall, taller than most; a thin figure that hid trained muscle and scars. The black widows dress hugged her loosely, showing nothing but the slow nod toward her daughters make them join her; leaving the sole male of the Arcs to stand in the dulling light and cool wind.
Ozpin looks at the young lad, walking forward his cane making little noise on the grass. He reaches the grave, standing next to the young Arc; the 2 staring at the memoriam of a good friend and amazing father.
"I….am sorry for your loss, young man." Ozpin says, watching the young man from the corner of his eye. He sees him stiffen, eyes widen a margin before returning to normal. Jaune Arc speaks, surprising Ozpin with his voice. It was soft, but held a certain strength.
"Thank you. Though there is nothing to be sorry for. Papa….said this was a possibility and he tried preparing us for it."
Ozpin raises an eyebrow at him. "It seems as if his…preparedness has helped you deal with is passing. As…for a 10 year old boy…you are being remarkably put together."
Jaune seems to take this at face value, nodding and continuing his staring. After a minute of silence, Jaune pipes up.
"If I may ask….Why are you still here? I hope I am not being to…direct.." Ozpin chuckles at that. Seems as if he inherited some of Andrews bluntness. Though he could detect a little bit of Maria's mouth in his tone.
"It is of no bother young man. I graduated with your father, as you more than likely know and I consider he and your mother as great friends. That and I owe Andrew more than I can say at present, but I promised that if something was to happen to he…that I would help his family. Be a pillar of support…"
Jaune hums, the sound behind it deep for his size and age. The breeze was picking up, small leaves being blown around them. After a minute, Jaune bends down placing his hand on the head stone. He says nothing but the closed eyes and relaxed posture made Ozpin believe he was saying his final goodbyes. When Jaune stood to his feet, Ozpin feels an odd motion to take step back.
Jaunes face, still holding that small smile, had hardened unnoticeably. He turned, giving a slight curtsy to him before walking away. Ozpin watches him join the others of his family; his mother grabbing a hold of his hand. The family walked away, their blonde hair shining in the dimming light. He turns to the grave of his old friend.
"I hope your rest is long and peaceful old friend. May your soul find everlasting peace in its womb."
And with that, he walks away. The graveyard returns to its former silence, the sun dipping beneath the horizon.
Maria Arc muffles another small sob, as she places her youngest to bed. The toddler babbles lightly, blowing small bubbles. She smiles and kisses her youngest daughters head, the soft blonde curls tickling her lips. And with a flick of her hand, the small radio next to the cradle bleeps to life playing a light lullaby. A minute passes the soft breath of the toddler, makes her smile and exit the room with a soft click of the door. She walks through the now, silent ancestral home of her….late husband. Thinking about him, nearly made her begin crying once more. The family pictures on the wall stare at her, the smiling faces making the deep sadness pang.
Her other daughters where in bed, the oldest ones staying up and helping cook dinner once they arrived home. The walk down the hall was quiet, passing by the closed doors of her daughters. She stops when she sees light coming out from under the door of her late husbands study. The door was lightly cracked, a shadow moving through the light and with light steps she opens the door.
Her eyes soften, and her chest heaves a silent sob. There standing at his fathers desk, was her only son, Jaune. He was standing directly over it, hands brushing some of the papers sitting on it. Surrounding him was bookshelves, upon bookshelves; each filled to the brim with books of all kinds and subjects. Maps and pictures hang on the walls, beautifully drawn images of Grimm and others lining small edges.
She couldn't see his face but the slightly hunched form of his small back told her everything. Jaune…was never one to show many emotions, always keeping a small smile on his face. He was never one to rush things either, always walking slowly or taking things slow. Something none of the other girls do, always rushing through life and never taking it slow. Jaune was always an immovable presence, no matter the circumstance. In his hiding of his emotions, he was always called 'emotionless'. He rarely if ever slouched, always having a certain strength in the way he walked. It was hidden quite well but every so often, his emotions would override and show.
The bright droplets of water on the floor beneath his feet was more than enough for her. She enters the study.
"Jaune? Sweetie?" Her voice wavered greatly, sounding wet with tears. Jaune stiffens at her voice, turning toward her. Maria feels her chest clench painfully as his face greets her. The same small smile was on his face but the tears streaking down his face ruined the smile. His cheeks were red, the small trails of tears increasing with every second. It was quite the odd sight…
"Mom? I….can't stop them…"
Maria walks forward small tears streaming down her face. "What…'hic'…can't you stop sweetie?"
"I can't stop the tears mom…" Was his answer, and with a burst of speed Maria hugs Jaune to her chest. As soon as she does, she feels him stiffen and relax; a gut wrenching cry escaping his lips. Maria joins him in his crying the 2 of them sliding to the ground, Jaunes arms wrapping around her. As his tears, snot, and slobber seep into her dress; she buries her face into his hair. There, they stayed and cried. After 10 minutes of constant crying, Maria feels Jaune go limp in her arms. She pulls him away, the quiet breathing and peaceful look on his snot stricken face makes her smile softly.
'He cried himself to sleep..' Maria thinks, standing to her feet shakily and bringing Jaunes limp body with her. She huffs, hoisting up him into her arms. She adjusts him into a bridal carry, smiling softly at his face. With soft steps, she turns the lights off to the study and carries Jaune to his roam, reminiscing about old times.
'Been awhile since I've done this..' Maria nudges the door open with her foot, the room dark. The clean walls, filled with small shelves decorated with random interesting knick knacks, greet her. The small bookshelf next to the 2 beds is filled with books, comics, and other little things. The 2 bed shifts lightly, blonde hair peeking from under bright blue covers. Maria smiles, putting Jaune to bed. She tucks him in, cleaning his face with a small handkerchief and whispers 'I love you'.
As she returns to the once shared room between she and her now late husband, she nods somewhat happily.
"Things shall be fine…We will survive."
And with that, the day ended just as it started. Quiet breathes, and dreamless sleeps.
3 years later
The soft sounds of coffee filling a pot, takes the house by storm. Soft footfalls echo lightly, slipper covered feet coming into view. The suns beams barely make it through the curtains, the warmth it brought a welcome change to the cool air of the morn. Small hands reach for an awaiting coffee cup, the dark liquid bringing tired red eyes into light and with a quiet hum, Maria Arc takes the first sip of coffee. She sits down at the coffee table, a newspaper handed to her as a small plate of toast is slid in front of her.
"Thanks sweetie." She grumbles, a happy hum coming from the person in the kitchen. Her eyes snap open, head whipping to the humming person standing at the stove. Tall and lithe, blonde hair now split with black and white, a soft face and small smile greeted her. A pair of heterochromic eyes stare at her; 1 blue and the other red; a deep feeling passing through her at the gaze.
"Jaune! Didn't I tell you to take a break from this? We can take care of ourselves, you know.."
Her only son, Jaune, stood at the coffee pot, a small smile upon his face. He stood at a staggering 6 foot 6 inches, a set of black dress slacks covering rather thin legs. The large metal boots coming out from under them were a lighter color, and clinked heavily against the tiled floor. The black skin tight dress suit, contradicting the red x shaped laces on the front and the small black cape filled him out in places not known and Maria couldn't help but blush lightly at him.
"It's fine mom. I've…gotten used to it…" His voice had deepened slightly in the last 3 years but it held the softness well known for him. But the warmth that was in it in his youth, had faded and it was now filled with a little….coldness. She opens her mouth to argue with him, stopping when her other daughters wake up and walk down.
Jeanne groans lightly, walking past her mother and yawning. Her blonde hair was curly and wild, the pink onesie absolutely adorable. Her eyes were closed nearly asleep at her feet, in her arms the youngest in the family. Jasper Arc yawned cutely, small hands rubbing her eyes and burying her face into Jeannes shoulder. The black curls, mixed with blonde strands, frame a round face and the small pajama dress was ruffled.
Jaune walks forward, grabbing Jasper from his twins arms. Jasper cries lightly at the loss of warmth, but quiets down when he wraps his cape around his frame. It completely covers the 3 year old, Jaune motioning for Jeanne to take a seat. She does, Jaune pouring her a glass of orange juice and quickly making his way his to stove to begin breakfast. Before long, the pleasing smell of bacon fills the large house, Jaunes tall slightly hunched form hovering over the stove. He was whisking soft eggs in a small bowl, one hand holding Jasper under his cloak.
Before long the other 2 sisters still at home make their way to the kitchen. The low groan and quiet cursing, accompanies Carolyn Arc her blonde hair wild. The pink shorts and white t-shirt accompany her sour attitude, the 17 year old girl grumbling and releasing small curses at having to wake up early. Maria smacks her hand as she passed. "Language!"
Carolyn snarls at her mother for a second, taking a seat next to Jeanne. "Jaune…Make me something heavy for lunch today. I have to stay over for practice today."
Jaune doesn't answer, pouring another glass of orange juice and handing it to her. Maria sips her coffee, Jeanne waking up slowly. "Don't order your brother around Carolyn."
Carolyn waves her off. "Bah…He's used to it by now."
Jaunes quiet hum makes Maria stare at him, watching him move bacon and eggs to 6 plates, adding salt and pepper to each of them. His hunched form, the black cloak, and the odd look to his face; Maria gets an odd image of one of her family. She frowns, the memory of a tall imposing figure, one who could control her face with complete control, and immense strength. A family member who was called immovable…
She's shaken from her thoughts when the plates are laid in front of her, one at a time. Jaune places them down nodding and walking out of the kitchen. Maria grabs her plate, listening to Jaunes heavy steps as he walks up the stairs to the bedrooms. A few minutes pass, a loud knock echoes. Jaunes voice comes out, soft and slow.
"Coleen….It's time to wake up.."
The quiet sound of a door opening, makes Maria grin lightly as a door closes. Jaunes heavy footfalls bounce in the hallways, Jaunes form popping around the corner with his cloak slightly bulkier. He makes his way to the left over chairs bringing the 2nd youngest into view. Black straight hair frames a sharp angular face, blue eyes glaring at the now rising son. The small pair of bunny pajamas shined and Jaune sits her in a chair. He quickly takes his seat, bringing Jasper out of his cloak and sitting her on his lap.
And with that, the Arc family begins their breakfast. Jaune feeding Jasper, Caroyln scarfing down his food, Maria eating slowly, and Coleen eating as slow as a turtle. Jeanne was sleepily eating, letting Jaune every so often feed her. After 15 minutes of eating, Carolyn leans back and growls. "Ugh….This waking up at the ass crack of dawn is getting fucking annoying …"
Maria gasps lightly. "Carolyn! What did I say about your language! You're younger siblings are present."
Maria grows a tick mark when Carolyn waves her off with a well hidden middle finger. She grabs the rolled up newspaper, smacking Carolyn upside the head with a loud 'smack'. Jaune winces lightly at the sound, rubbing Jaspers head. She preens into the touch, Jaune getting up and grabbing the empty plates. Carolyn was grabbing her head, Jeanne giggling and Coleen having a dead stare at them all.
Maria stops her ferocious smacking of Carolyn to blink and smile. She stands up, smirking lightly when she announces. "I call dibs on the first shower."
At that, all the other girls with the exception of Jasper jerk upwards. Jeanne makes her way to dash towards the bathroom, only for Carolyn to trip her. She hits the ground and by the time she jumps up, her mother had already dashed toward the bathroom; a door closing up the stairs. "Dang it…" Jeanne mutters, standing up. Carolyn does the same, and makes her way back to her room. Jaune returns from the sink, carrying the 2 youngest in his arms. The 2 were tucked happily into the crook of his arms, his cloak quickly being pulled to block light. Jeanne smiles at that, standing on her tippy toes and kissing Jaune on the cheek.
His eyes widen and the small smile grows slightly warmer, before dying off. "Thanks for the food Jaune. I'm heading back up to our room to get my clothes ready for school."
Jaune nods, Carolyn huffing and placing her hands on her hip. "She's lucky that I'm still tired." She turns to Jaune, giving a slight glare. "You'd better make my lunch extra good today Jauney and make sure to give me extra suckers!" Jaune simply stares at her, mouth set in thin line but it morphs into a smile. He nods and makes his way to the living room. Before long the early morning news blares out, Carolyn snarling.
With Maria 30 mins later
Maria sighs contently, grabbing the dress she wanted to wear for the day. As she did, her spine spasms causing her to gasp. Her teeth clench to the point of cracking, red hot pain flashing through her body. After a few seconds it passes, her body shaking. She waits for the tremors to pass, looking in the mirror at the cause. There just to the right of her spine, was a large patch of scar tissue. It took up the entire lower right side of her back, the skin rough and dark. The sight of it makes her shiver, and nearly vomit.
After her husband passed, she had taken up her rifle and returned to the hunter committee. For 2 ½ years, she fought, bled, and sacrificed so that her children could live safely and happy. While her husband had invested some of his money, some of the investments paid off others didn't. Their money situation wasn't bad to say but with Andrew gone; money would be tight for later on. Her eldest daughters sent money when they could but they had lives and needed money as well. Her hunting career was doing rather well…She was paid well, family friends helped when they could and all things considered, it was ok.
But during one mission, a Deathstalker got too close and landed a devastating strike to her back. It broke her aura and took a large chunk of meat with it. She paid the Deathstalker back with a grenade in the mouth but the damage was done. She was lucky to be alive!
The damage done to her spine didn't heal completely, and so her hunting career had to stop. They were back where they started. Maria sighs. She saved a good amount of money during that time, so they would be ok for awhile. But…during her hunting career, she didn't have much time to spend with her children. So Jaune took over as the…family mom so to speak. He cooked the food, he did the laundry, he cleaned the house, he did the grocery shopping. He did everything she did before but now didn't have time for. And it seems, during her long stretches of absence, her daughters had changed…
She shakes the dark thoughts from her head, quickly getting dressed and making her way downstairs. As she reached the bottom, she hears Carolyn and Jeannes voices. She stops, the conversation catching her interest.
"Carolyn….I know you have some thoughts on mom since she had to take up her hunting career again but…please at the very least hold your tongue when Jas and Col aren't present."
That was Jeannes voice, the gentleness in it gone and replaced with a steel that Maria didn't know she had. She hears Carolyn scoff, and answer back.
"Thoughts? I have far more than a few thoughts for our mother."
Maria could feel Jeanne bristle at the tone, her voice scathingly hot. "She did it for our sake. Not her own!"
"Do you know that for certain?" Was Carolyn's response. Maria feels her heart beat harder and a pit form in her stomach. Jeanne speaks, slight confusion in her voice. "What do you mean by that?"
"Not even a month passes after dads' death, and she was gone. We both know that the family had enough money to last us a good while, that she didn't need to go and start being a hunter again. We all coped with dads death in our own ways, but none of us simply….left." The way Carolyn said that made Maria nearly fall to her knees. The conversation dies off for a few seconds, Jeanne and Carolyns soft breathing heard. The 2 girls seemingly tired of the silence begin speaking again.
"Mom had a hard time looking at any of us after dad passed. There's no way you missed the glances she gave us. Not to mention that Jaune looks like dad. There's a damn good chance that she took up her hunter career to not look at us."
Jeannes sputter was cute even in Marias racing mind. "Mom loves us! She'd never do that…" Carolyn snickers. "You sure about that? She was here for the birthdays, she was here for the holidays, and I….am thankful for that but she wasn't here for the important days."
Maria pokes her head around the corner, happy that the darkness of the early morning hid her. Carolyn was leaning back into the couch, Jeanne sitting across from her. The 2 were frowning, but Carolyns was far deeper. Carolyn reached into her pocket pulling out a sucker and sucking on it. After a second of rolling the sucker around in her mouth, Carolyn takes it out and points it at Jeanne. "Who was here for our first periods, when we were angry and irritable enough to literally rip an ursa in half?"
"Jaune…" Jeanne whispers.
"Who was here for us when we had nightmares?"
"Jaune." Was Jeannes whispered response. Carolyn nodded and continued. "Who took care of us, no matter what we needed, no matter the time nor the day?"
"Jaune.."
"Exactly." Carolyn finished. She leaned back into the couch, sighing into the air. "Don't get me wrong Jeanne. I love mom…I really, really do…but during these last 3 years, she's been…absent in our lives...for good reasons or bad reasons that does not matter. It doesn't change the fact at her absence…"
The silence stretched on for a bit, Maria legs growing weak. She missed so much…..Her mind darts to her children bringing up information 3 years too late. She feels a deep unsettled rage manifest, and starts to get up when Jeannes voice echoes.
"Where were you during those times of need?"
At that Carolyn, stares at Jeanne. Jeanne stares up at her elder sister, eyes so much like her brothers that it scares Maria. "You're the oldest in the house when mom is away. Why didn't you cook? Why didn't you clean? Why didn't you take up the mantle of responsibility for us? You are no better…"
Carolyns glaring face softens considerably, hands reaching up and wiping away a few tears that were building up. " I…know Jeanne. I'm…not the best older sister. I can't cook. I can't clean worth a damn. I suck at emotions. I have the worst temper of the family and like to start fights for the simple fun of it. I…hate myself for it and the simple thought of makes me angry..But…I'm weak…so very very weak…"
At that, Carolyn started to weep openly. Maria stands to her feet, all anger from before gone. She steps forward, stopping when the heavy footfalls of Jaune echo behind her. His heavy hand, makes her turn toward him; the once permanent smile gone and now replaced with a soft frown. He shakes his head, Jasper and Coleen absent from his body. He walks past her, heavy footfalls catching the attention of Jeanne and Carolyn. He walks over to Carolyn, bringing out a small handkerchief. He starts to wipe away Carolyns tears, the girl swiping at his hand feebly. After a few seconds of dabbing, Carolyns face was clean of tears and her sniffling reduced to nothing. "I'm supposed to be the older sister you big idiot.." Carolyn grumbled out. Jeanne chuckles from behind Jaune, nodding when he turns to her and smiles. She stands to her feet, grabbing Carolyns hand with her own. She pulls her elder sister up and grins. "How about we take a bath together? Like we did…when we were younger…"
Carolyn simply nods, looking at Jaune. He stood over her smile now on his face and speaks. "You'd better have my lunch and clothes ready when we get out…." Jaune simply smiles giving a small nod at her. They walk away rounding the corner and seeing their mother. Jeanne stops, giving a small smile at her and Carolyn looks away. Maria gives the 2 of them a shaky smile watching them climb the stairs. She waits until the door closes before letting the tears start to fall. She sits there quietly sobbing, Jaune walking over and hugging her.
She stood under him by a few inches, so she buried her face into his chest. It was harder than she remembered, and his clothes smelled rather odd. After a few seconds, Jaune speaks. "They don't hate you. None of us do…. It's just….after dad passed and you had to take up hunting again…things became slightly different…"
He guides her to couch, sitting her down. "Don't worry about us. We…can take care of ourselves. You're here now and that all that matters…You're …we're goin' to be just fine…"
And with that Maria's sobs slow down and stop. She waits for a few seconds, sniffling. "Do you mean that?"
"Of course! I don't lie…" Jaune smiles, and looks up. Maria smiles up at him, hugging him tighter.
"You get that from your aunt…" Jaune laughs lowly at that, body rumbling and they both blink when they hear the bathroom door open. "Jaune! We need some towels up here!" It was Carolyn, her voice echoing. Jaune frowns to himself. "That's what I forgot to do…"
With a final smile to his mother he stands up, and walks towards the stairs. Marias watches him, eye widening when she catches a glimpse of his hands. They were a dark brown, almost black in their color. The small metallic slits above them, was incredibly familiar. She stands to her feet, opening her mouth to stop Jaune. Her voice dies off just as he reached the stairs. Where had he gotten those?!
She hears her daughters thank Jaune for the towels, his heavy footfalls bouncing. Marias mind raced, previous worries about her daughters being pushed to the back burner of her mind. The odd strength he showed, the heavy presence and coldness made since now. Her…dear sister had been in contact. The thought of her sister makes her clench her fists…
She brings out her scroll, bringing up a certain number and holds her finger above it. She stops when the footsteps echo again, the girls coming down dressed and ready for school. Jeanne was dressed in a long sleeved blue blouse, the white skirt oddly garish. The brown trails boots completely different to the ensemble. Carolyn had a very punk like look. The black beanie had a small blue star on it, and it hung loosely to her head. The black neck warmer was zipped up and snug. The white sweatshirt was giant in comparison to her lithe frame, the black shirt under it decorated with small stickers.
The black shorts covered her legs to her knees, the black stockings reaching well under it. White tennis shoes squeaked on the floor, and she pulled a sucker from her pocket. Jaune hadn't changed, Coleen and Jasper holding his hands. Coleen was wearing baggy small sweatshirt and sweatpants, an annoyed look on her face. Jasper was wearing a pretty sundress, the yellow bright and warm. Jaune had their back packs attached to his back via small leather straps.
Maria looks at them, taking a quick picture of them with her scroll. She stands up, walking to them. "Ready for school?"
Jeanne nods, elbowing Carolyn when she didn't nod. Jasper smiles, and Coleen rolls her eyes. Jaune gives the slow nod, nudging them forward with his hands. Jeanne walks forward, stopping and giving her mother a kiss on the cheek. Maria smiles at the soft kiss, giving Jeanne a kiss to the forehead. Jasper runs up giving her a quick hug and happy 'Bye-bye'. Maria hugs her tight, pleased humming echoing . Coleen gives a slight nod at her, following the others. Carolyn walks past her, stopping and grumbling. She hugs Maria quickly; Maria jumping a little. She hears Carolyn mumble a 'I'm happy that you're back'.
Marias smile grows plus she vibrates with happiness. She kisses Carolyns head, giggling when she pulls away blushing lightly. Carolyns walks out of the door, Jaune taking the chance to give his own goodbye. He give his mother a kiss on the cheek, Maria kissing his forehead. She jumps when Carolyn yells.
"Jaune! Hurry up!"
Jaune chuckles, smiling and exiting the house. The sisters nod, Jaune following behind them. Maria watches them walk down the small road, the school not that far from their home. Carolyn was at the front, arms behind her head. Jasper and Coleen were behind her; the 2 of them walking slowly. Jeanne and Jaune were behind them Jaunes cloaked form and Jeannes gentle demeanor acting as a driving force for them.
After they passed the horizon, Maria brings her scroll back. The number was still up, touching the green phone symbol. It rings 6 times going to voicemail, the monotone voice of the answering machine playing. She curses, bringing up another number. The grey haired face of Beacon academy comes up, the number being rang.
After a few seconds, he answers; voice slightly groggy from the early morning.
"Maria…While I'd say good morning…But you calling this early is normally nothing but trouble…"
Maria growls. "Ozpin…Has….my sister been in contact with my son?"
She hears the man take a sip of his coffee. After a few seconds, he answers. "I beg your pardon?" Maria seems to hiss at that, hearing Ozpin make a slight wince. "You heard what I said Ozpin." She hears him hum, and take a deep sip of his coffee. "Yes.."
"When and why?" Maria asks, voice cold.
"I know of the why and of the when. Which one do you want first?" Ozpin explains. Maria walks to the couch, taking a seat and glaring at the scroll. "Don't play coy with me Ozpin! We both know I can hit you from here.."
The sound of coffee sipping echoes. "Of that I have no doubt…But she contacted your children about a year after you started hunting again. It was by scroll the first time, but it came to my attention that she visited your children shortly after her first calls."
Maria hums at this. She noticed nothing different when she returned home around that time. But her kids never said anything about her sister visiting….She frowns, thinking deeply. She stops thinking for a few seconds. Her thinking could come later AFTER she heard of the reason why..
"That's the 'when'. Now about the why…."
"You already know the reason why.." Ozpin says. Marias eyes grow wide and she grips the scroll to the point of it cracking. "We had an agreement…."
"Either, the agreement between you 2 is null and void or we were all incredibly wrong about Ozen…" Ozpin remarks. He takes a sip of his coffee, speaking after a second. "Now…while I understand your agreement was made when you could not find any…willing participants….you must realize that Ozen has the same instincts you do…It was only a matter of time for them to manifest…"
"But why now? 13 years later? She barely showed any interest in him. Sending small gifts on their birthdays makes since, but….Grraahhh!" Maria yells out, standing to her feet. She starts stomping, yelling out small curses and growling. It lasts until her spine tingles and she takes a seat. She huffed and puffed, Ozpin piping up.
"You done?"
"Yes." Maria whispered. Ozpin hums and chuckles. "Well…until you can get in contact with her, I believe your answers lie within your children."
Marias face turns sad, and despite not having video enabled on the scroll, Ozpin could seemingly detect the sadness. "Maria? Has something happened?"
"My…kids don't have the best view of me since I had to start hunting again. I…missed a lot of things during my absences..and Carolyn seems to hold the biggest grudge. Jasper is too young to truly understand hate, but she goes to Jaune for things she should come to me for. Coleen hasn't changed much, she just…grew. Jeanne has turned into a…pseudo peace talker for Carolyn…and Jaune…Jaunes changed the most." Saying this makes Maria choke up a little, shaking. Ozpin stays silent, speaking after a minute.
"You made the choice to ensure your family had continued financial support. Your children are young. Carolyn is barely an adult and is in a turbulent part of her life. Your youngest is simply used to Jaune being there and that will change in time. If I remember correctly, Coleen had a rather close relationship to Andrew, so she more than likely regressed into a much more…secluded lifestyle. It is not uncommon for one to do so after a death of a loved one and stay in it for an…extended period of time. Jeanne always seemed like the peace talker of your little band of children, so no surprise there…Jaune…however….He more than likely changed do to the words of advice for his father."
"Andrews advice? What could that do with..Jaunes changes? Ozen would be more apt to change someone that Andrew…" Maria questioned. Ozpins hum makes her raise an eyebrow.
"Andrew while a good man…had some very…ingrained views about the world. The Arcs…have been a long standing family, that has their hands in many of the worlds governments and families. As such, much of their traditions are predictably old fashioned…fathers passed it down to the younger generations…allowing the traditions to take hold. Andrew while more accepting of the newer views of the world…still had many of these older traditions ingrained within him. Many of them were good…but many of them were also, very easily misdefined…Andrew more than likely taught young Jaune that if he was to die…that he would become the emotional pillar of the family. Your son had more than likely took the lessons of his father…extremely seriously. So…quite frankly, your son more than likely will change with your constant presence again. Do not worry Maria…Things will fix themselves, as they always do."
Maria sighs, gripping the scroll with tight fingers. With a scowl, the hangs up on Ozpin and throws the scroll. "Seems as if I need to give my sister a call..."
Somewhere within Mistral
The groans of men and women alike echo across the trees. A wince echoes across the face of a young child, the child staring towards the person they called master. Tall, thin, imposing and yet having the strength to stop a charging goliath dead; their master was quite a sight. The child blinks when the master smacked the last bandit, the poor guy being turned into a red smear on the nearby tree. The hulking figure stands straight, spine cracking and pooping with every movement. The child watches their master look to the sky, the large hat covering the masters face shadowing their face.

Authors note: I really like Ozen from Made in the Abyss. Her presence, her looks, her whole character made me gush and shiver. Had an idea that she existed in the world of RWBY and well...that idea made this little oneshot pop up. If I ever continue with this, Girls Frontline elements will pop up but until then. I hope you enjoyed~~ Leave a comment and a like, if ya did!
