Chapter 2.

Klaus told Caroline that if she's was to move, he would do the same to her. And he couldn't even look at her. He was so mad at her. So he called Marcel to take care of Camille while he dealt with Caroline himself.

"Please take her to her home and be with her until she wakes up. Then explain everything to her. I'll be there as soon as I can" Klaus told Marcel.

"Okay, but what happened. She killed her, didn't she`?" Marcel asked.

"Marcellus, please. No questions."

And then Marcel took Camille's body in his arms gently and flashed away.

For a minute or two Klaus just stared at Caroline standing a few meters away from him, small smile on her lips.

"Come on, Klaus, I did her a favour. Now your girl isn't a fragile human being anymore and you can be with her forever when I leave town."

Klaus stepped towards her slowly and Caroline knew this second what he was about to do.

"Please, don't, please don't be mad. I'm sorry okay. Just don't do it, please. I can't-"

And Klaus grabbed her by the arms and looked straight to her eyes and said angrily "Turn it on!"

She blinked once and then he saw how everything she had put on hold was coming back to her.

"No, no, no, no, no," she repeated, shaking her head and she was becoming hysterical.

"No, my mom, all those people I killed and…Camille." She cried and looked at Klaus, " Oh my god, Klaus I am so sorry, I don't know what to say."

"Then be quiet," he yelled at her.

So stopped crying and he just stared at her some more with an unreadable look.

"Come on," he grabbed his wrist and started pulling her to his car.

All the way to home neither of them said a word. Klaus stared at the road and Caroline looked out of the passenger window. He was pissed off and she was depressed.

When they walked in to the compound, she said very quietly to Klaus, " I need to be a alone for a while. Can I use your room for that?"

"Yes." He hissed.

Klaus went to see Camille. He stood by the door of her apartment for a minute, listening Marcel explaining things to Camille.

"I'm a vampire now?" Camille asked confused.

"No, you are in transition. You will need to drink human blood to become one. If you don't, you will die." Marcel answered.
"Oh my god. So basically I'm dead either-"

"I'm so sorry, Cami. You want to blame someone, you can blame me." Klaus chimed in.

"Klaus! I do blame you! You and your ex-girlfriend or whoever the hell she is. How could you let her do this to me, Klaus?" Camille was furious.

"Cami, I'm so sorry. She had turned her humanity off. I didn't know what do with her when she first came to town and now I see that I should have forced her to turn it on the second she got here."

"Her humanity? What the hell are you even talking about?"

"It's a switch. Every vampire has it. There's a magical switch in the brain of a vampire that makes it possible to turn off one's humanity. When one does does that, all their emotions are off. Then the vampire doesn't care about anything or anybody."

"And you let her roam the city like that. What the hell is wrong with you, Klaus? Are you that much in love with her? Did you want her in your bed so bad?"

"That's what I would like to know, too?" Marcel chimed in, asking the same thing from Klaus.

"It doesn't matter. Yes, she means a lot to me and I take full responsibility for what you are going through."

"But you can't make it right, Klaus. It's not like you would kill her for that."

"No. But you can sleep easier knowing that she isn't a threat to anyone anymore."

"What do you mean?"

"I compelled her to turn it on and she did. Right now she has a lot to face and she's not a threat, trust me."

"Well, then that makes it all better. Klaus, please leave. Both of you, I want to be alone."

Although both men were reluctant to do so, they left.

A few hours after that there was a knock on her door. When Camille opened the door, she stood face to face with the woman who had killed her. She was different. She looked tired and had clearly cried. She didn't wear a revealing outfit anymore, but just a random t-shirt and a pair of jeans.

"You have some nerve showing up here…" Camille stated when faced with Caroline.

"Can I come in`? I really need to talk to you."

"No and Klaus already explained the whole humanity switch thing. He basically said that the Caroline who killed me, is gone. So I don't know, I should congratulate you or something. Is it good to be back being yourself?"

"Cami, I'm so sorry-"

"You know, my friends get to call me 'Cami'. My enemies can use my full name which is Camille."

"I'm not your enemy. I just wanted to know if I there's anything I can help you with. You may not want my help but I went through the ordeal not too long ago. And I had good friends who helped and although you don't see me as one, I do want to help."

"You want to help. Okay, you can just-," and she was about the slam the door in her face when she had change of heart, "Okay, maybe there is something you can do for me. Come in."

"I just wanted to ask that when you went through the transition, did you consider not feeding and just dying?" Camille asked Caroline in all seriousness when they were seated on her couch.

"When I went though it, it happened so fast. I was in a hospital and I was starving so I tried drinking blood and that was it. It was done. I didn't know what was happening at the time."

"But you said you had friends helping you?"

"Not at first, that part came later. When I was already technically a vampire."

"I see…"

"Camille, are you really considering not feeding."

"I don't know. I don't think I want to be a vampire. Did you?"

"No. But in the end I liked who I became once I became a vampire. Before that I was a shallow and an insecure control freak who chased around every dickhead she could find. But now being in control works in my favour and I'm strong and fast and I like this new me."

"Okay, could you help me with the feeding part then? Should I use blood bags or what?"

"I actually have a couple of blood bags with me."

"Can you leave them here? I want to do this alone."

"Camille, when you have drank the blood, you will want more, a lot more. Two blood bags aren't gonna cut it."

"Ok, then I'll come by the house. But I want to do this alone. Please, Caroline?"

"Okay,I'll do it, but I don't think Klaus will be very happy If I'm gonna leave you like this."

"What does he care? He did the same."

"Oh, he does care. You should have seen how angry he was with me. I thought he would never recover. You two have a thing right? And then I blew into town and ruined it for you two. Don't worry, I will leave soon."

"I don't know. He seems to still have deep feelings for you."

"Okay, let's not get into a debate about who he loves more, you or me?" Caroline laughed.

"Right." Camille also laughed at that.

"Okay, I leave you do it. And I'll give you my cell phone number, in case you need something or if I could do something else for you"

"Thanks."

And with that Caroline left Camille's apartment and then walked the streets of New Orleans, not knowing what the hell to do with herself. She felt that she couldn't return to Klaus' home and at the same time wasn't ready to return Mystic Falls. She found a bench and sat down on it and tears just started to fall down on her cheeks. She was in mourning. Not just her mother, but all those people she had killed and of course Camille who she now saw as a friend.

"Where the hell have you been?" Klaus yelled when he saw her entering his premises.

"Please don't yell. I was at Camille's."

"Went to finish what you started?" Klaus asked bitterly and went to pour some bourbon to drink, not even offering her a glass.

"I went there because she needed a friend. Someone who has gone through the same thing."

"And that someone had to be you."

"Well she doesn't have that many female vampire friends, does she`? It was the least I could do. The only one of my victims I could still help."

Klaus just nodded and sat down next to her. "How are you, Caroline?" Klaus asked her.

"I'm totally numb. I have cried and cried and everything is just this back whole of nothing in me."

"Because of your mom?"

"Because of everything. I don't have anybody. You have this whole family who does everything for you but I have no one."

"What are you talking about? What about your friends in Mystic Falls? And you always have me." He smiled slightly at her.

"As a friend?"

"As a friend, as a lover, as whatever you need me to be."

"What about Camille?"

Now Klaus stood up and put some space between them. Camille was still a touchy subject for him. "Cami means a lot to me. If you weren't here, I would probably start something with her. But what I feel for her is nothing compered to what I feel for you." And he finished his drink with one gulp. "But as always, the decision is yours."

Now Caroline was quickly on her feet when she went closer to him, took his hands and looked him in the eye, "And I appreciate it. More than you know. But right now I need to focus on myself and my guilt for what I have done. I need to return to Mystic Falls. I don't want you to wait for me. You should give Camille a chance. She needs you now."

And with that she left the compound, getting right away in the taxi that was waiting outside, leaving Klaus totally heartbroken.

6 months later she found herself back in New Orleans. She hadn't called Klaus, she had just packed up her bags and flown straight to Klaus' City. From the airport she went to a random hotel that was in the heart of the city.

After freshening up, she decided to go visit Camille because she needed to see, if she was okay. When she got to her apartment, she realised that she couldn't have picked a worse time to visit her friend as she found the door to Camille's apartment open and there was signs of struggle. So she asked some of her neighbours if they knew anything and she was informed that she had passed away just last night. Her boyfriend's ex had done it or so they were told. Caroline put two and two together and discovered that her boyfriend was Klaus Mikealson and worry over her friend drove her straight to his house.

There she was first greeted by Hayley and Freya who weren't keen on letting her upstairs to Klaus' rooms as he was in deep mourning.

"I'm sorry, Caroline, but I don't think right now is the best time to visit Klaus. He's not himself right now." Hayley said upon seeing Caroline in their home.

"Hayley, please, I'm a friend, I can help him get though this."

"Are you a friend? Just a friend? Weren't you two sleeping with one another at one time or the other?" Freya asked. "I don't think an ex is who he wants to see considering who betrayed him last night."

"Ex-girlfriend right? What happened?"

"It was, um, his unstable ex-lover Aurora who poisoned Camille. We tried to find the antidote but we couldn't. The poison was newly developed and it's a really long story, Caroline." Hayley explained. "Maybe you could come back later."

"Caroline?" It was his hoarse voice.

They all turned their faces to look him standing on the second floor. It was obvious that he had been crying for hours and he looked so tired.

"Klaus-"

Then something flashed in his face and Caroline understood something the others didn't.

He needed her.

So she flashed upstairs to him and pulled him in a tight hug. They stayed like that, him sobbing in her embrace, for what seemed like hours. Klaus Mikealson wasn't the kind of guy who would cry in front of just anybody but Caroline Forbes wasn't just anybody. When they finally broke apart, she cradled his face saying, "I'm here for you, Klaus. In what ever capacity you need."

"Thank you, Caroline." He led her to his bedroom where she they sat on armchairs by his bed after Caroline had poured them a drink. Now that he had time to collect himself a little, he wanted to talk to her. But it was Caroline who had to start otherwise he would just stare out of the window.

"Klaus what happened? Hayley told be it was your ex who poisoned her?"

"Yes, she um blew into town and totally blindsided me. I didn't know how out of control she was. First she kidnapped Camille and tortured her, I found her, but too late. I of course killed Aurora for that and we tried to find a cure but she died anyway. Late last night."

"I'm so sorry, Klaus. I don't even know what to say."

"Let's just change the subject. So, what brings you to New Orleans. Some kind of an emergency in Mystic Falls? Need my blood?" He asked bitterly.

"No, Klaus."

"Then what is it?"

"It's not important right now. You're in mourning, you should get some rest. I can come back later. And you can call me whenever." And with that she stood up but couldn't get far as he grabbed her wrist.

"Caroline, please, tell me why you came? Otherwise, I'm gonna assume the worst, you know that."

"Okay," she started, standing there looking down at him, "I came for you."

"But you said you didn't even know what was happening until you landed in New Orleans."

"No, Klaus, I came for you. I came to be with you." That last sentence was barely a whisper.

Klaus was totally in shock. It was everything he ever wanted since meeting her in Mystic Falls but her timing just couldn't have been worse.

"I see. Got to say that your timing is impeccable."

"I know, Klaus. I told you it's not the time to discuss us. I'll come back. I'll stay in the city for as long as you want me here."

And with that she left. He didn't try to convince her to stay because it wasn't the time. He first had to mourn and bury his girlfriend.

When Caroline got back to hotel, she felt totally lost. She lied down on the bed and started to cry, she was sad but not so much because of Camille but because of Klaus. She loved him and made him sad, also made her sad. After a while she had fallen asleep when suddenly her cell phone rang. It was Klaus.

"Hi, Klaus."

"Caroline, love, I wanted to invite you to Cami's funeral. Hayley just got the arrangements done and it's gonna be 2 pm tomorrow."

"I don't know if it would be appropriate. You know I did technically kill her."

"Water under the bridge, love. I know she would have wanted you there. You were a huge help to her when she was in transition."

"Okay, I'll be there. Don't worry, Klaus. Just get some rest. Promise me."

"I promise you, Caroline" And Caroline could almost hear a slight smile on his face.

The funeral was beautiful. All her friends were there, including Klaus and his family and Caroline.

The wake was held at Rousseau's and Caroline and Klaus hadn't talked to each other the whole day but when she wanted to leave, she couldn't leave without telling him goodbye.

"Klaus, I-," she approached him while he was standing by her casket. "I'm leaving-"

And then he turned around to face her, confused, like he was just now discovering her presence in Cami's funeral. That frightened her a little. He still hadn't lost his temper and she was afraid that now was the time.

But he just nodded and turned his back on her. So she just left.

After getting to her hotel room she decided to take a shower. When she was done, she wrapped a towel around her body and exited the bathroom only to find that someone was sitting on her bed. It was dark but she knew it was the man for who she had come back to this city.

"Klaus, what are you doing here?"

Only then Caroline realised that he had a bottle of bourbon with him and he appeared quite drunk. Which was understandable. Still, Caroline didn't know what to do with him.

Her train of thought was interrupted when he stood up and walked towards here, with hunger in his eyes.

"Klaus, I don't know if it's such a good Idea, you are still mourning." She was taking a few steps back, while he closed the distance between them and before she knew what was happening, she was on the bed, Klaus was on top of her, kissing her with hands all over her body.

Thousand thoughts circled In her brain during that part. Mostly she thought how wrong it was to do give in right now. Sleeping with your ex after your girlfriend's funeral was just not right. But at the same time she just couldn't deny it to him. We'll deal with it later like always was her last coherent thought before he removed the towel between them.

When she woke up, he was gone. On the bedside table there was a simple note in his handwriting that read 'Thank you'.
