Chapter 3

He was drinking in his study, thinking about Camille and he couldn't help, he also thought about Caroline. What he had done the night before, it had been wrong, he knew it. Not that he didn't want to spend the night with Caroline but it was too soon. He had used her for comfort and that's no way to start an epic love story now that she had chosen to be with him. He had to make it up to her. So he took out his phone and dialled her number.

"What do you want, Klaus?"

"You are mad at me? Where are you? I can hardly hear you."

Caroline sighed, "I'm at the airport. I'm getting out of the city"

"You are leaving. Again?"

"Klaus, I can't do this with you. I came here to give that Yes you have waited since meeting me. Or so I thought. But when I came, I found out you had moved on. And you were in mourning during which you slept with me, using me for comfort. Do you realise that every time we have slept together, it has been under peculiar circumstances? First time I did it to get rid of you, the second time I wanted to have fun and the third time I wanted to comfort you, forgetting what it would do to me, emotionally."

"Okay, I get it, Caroline, but you told me to move on, which I did. And I am sorry that I used you like that but I promise you that I wasn't thinking about Camille when we were together.

"You expect me to believe that? I saw you yesterday, you were inconsolable which is understandable, given that you were in mourning."

"Caroline, I'm in love with you. DO you really think that I would think about another woman when in bed with you. Yes, I had feelings for Camille and I was sad that she died but you are not the second choice. Or what ever the hell you think of me"

"Ok, could we not do this over the phone. I'm leaving for now but I'll come back. And then we'll talk, okay."

"When?"

"When you have had time to heal and I have had time to think things over. I'm going to visit relatives in California. Please don't come after me, let me be."

It wouldn't be hard to track her down as she didn't have many relatives and he so wanted to go to her, to start over. Klaus Mikaelson usually didn't give in like that but now he was afraid to make things worse if he had followed her to California.

The weeks passed by and there wasn't any word besides a few messages that everything was fine. Klaus did the only thing he knew to do to pass the time – he painted.

Two months had passed since their last conversation when Freya came smiling in to the study. "Guess who's here, little brother?"

"I don't know, Santa and his elves?" Klaus asked absent-mindedly.

"Guess again?" And it was her voice that sounded like an angel was singing.

"Caroline!" He smiled, trying to hide overjoy and relief he felt seeing her.

"So can I get a hug or are you going to just stand there?" she asked smiling while Freya excused herself.

He didn't need a second time to be told what to do so he closed the distance between them and went in for a awkward embrace.

"So how are you?" She asked sincerely.

"I'm good. Been painting a lot. And you?"

"Honestly, haven't even picked up a brush," She smiled and he laughed a little at her attempt at humour.

"But I have been walking a lot with my cousin's dog, golden retriever. Partied some and speaking of painting. I have a gift for you."

"A gift?" he hadn't expected that.

"Yes, it's downstairs. Basically it's a picture of me painted by a street artist in LA. I don't know if you want it. I know you have hundred pictures painted of me but I wanted you to have something that I personally have given-"

"Caroline, love, you are rambling. I'm sure I'll love it. And I appreciate the sentiment."

"Okay, if you say so."

"I do."

And they smiled at each other for while.

"So let's talk about us, shall we?" Klaus went to pour them a drink.

"So, straight to the point. Okay, where to we stand?"

"You tell me?" Klaus smiled, handing her the drink.

"Okay, I'll start. I meant everything I told you during that phone call. I just think everything's been so wrong between us from the start?"

"I wouldn't say everything. But you are right, we need a fresh start."

"What do you have in mind?"

"New location, you can pick it. Far away from Mystic Falls and New Orleans. And there we'll start our life together and I will show you every day, what you mean to me. I promise you will never have to doubt the depth of my love for you or be jealous of anyone ever."

"Wow, first of all I was never jealous. I just felt used. Secondly, I think it's a wonderful idea to leave. But what about your family. What about Hope?"

"We will not stay abroad forever and Hayley can visit with Hope."

"You have it all figured out, don't you?" she teased.

"Well, you gave me a lot of time to think things over."

She started to lean in to kiss him but he put a finger on her lips, "No, love, not until we are there."

"Seriously?"

"Yes, 'seriously'," he mocked her American accent.

"I want a perfect new start."

"Ok then where we'll we go?"

And as if by magic, a globe appeared in front of her.

"So spin it and close your eyes and pick a place. You know how it works."

She just beamed at him as she did just that. Her finger landed on the water close to Iceland.

"Wonderful, I love iceland. It's cold but I'm sure we can find a way to keep warm" Klaus smiled at her.

"Okay, if I can't kiss you, you can't make those ambiguous jokes."

"Fair enough. Let's go, shall we?"

THE END

There might be an epilogue too, I don't know.
