Chapter 3
Haley opened her eyes, and immediately wanted to close them again. Her head ached like crazy, and her stomach didn't feel much better. She stretched her arms, and was surprised when she hit someone. Then she rolled over, and she saw him. Everything came back to her, and as much as she didn't want to, she smiled. Just the sight of his sleeping body reminded her of the night of ecstasy she had experienced just a few hours before. Before she could recall any further, she heard the familiar ring of her cell phone. She quickly answered it before it could wake the man lying beside her.
"Hello?" She answered in just above a whisper.
"Where in the hell are you?" Brooke's voice wasn't nearly as hushed, and it made Haley cringe in pain.
"You think you could turn it down a bit."
"Do you know what time it is?"
"No." Haley answered, and then began scanning the room for a clock.
"Its 12:15." Haley didn't know why that was so important. "Haley, are you there?"
"Yeah."
"So?"
"So what? Brooke…" Before Haley could finish, she realized it was Saturday. "Shit!" Haley said in a voice louder than she had intended. "I'm suppose to have lunch with Steven and his parents at 12:30."
"Its about time you screwed that brain of yours on. He's waiting."
"Steven's there?"
"No, its superman. Of course Steven's here."
"What did you tell him?"
"I told him you went to the store to buy pantyhose."
"You what? Brooke that's the lamest…"
"Don't finish that sentence. You're the one that didn't come home. How in the hell was I suppose to know what to tell him. Besides, I was still half asleep when he came banging on the door."
"You have to make him leave."
"How in the hell am I suppose to that?"
"I don't know….Tell him I'm stuck in traffic, and I'll meet him there."
"Fine. But you owe me."
"Just make sure he's gone by the time I get there," Haley said, and slammed the phone shut.
She quickly scanned the room for her clothing, and pulled it on even faster. Luckily, Nathan was still asleep, and she didn't have to deal with him too. She slipped out of the large house, and took a cab back to the apartment.
----
Brooke was sitting on the kitchen counter, drinking her third cup of coffee, and anxiously awaiting Haley's arrival. She hadn't come home, and the last person she had been with was Nathan. Nathan Scott. Something had definitely happened, and Brooke wanted every last detail.
The door quickly swung open, and Haley ran straight to her room, without even acknowledging Brooke's presence. Brooke jumped off the counter, and headed to Haley's room. But Haley was already in the shower.
Brooke went back into the kitchen, and made another pot of coffee. She was making Haley some toast when she heard Haley's bedroom door open. Brooke had every intention of questioning her immediately, but Haley looked awful.
"You look like crap."
"Thanks, Brooke," Haley spat back angrily.
"Here. Take these, and drink this." Brooke handed Haley a large glass of water, and some aspirin.
"Thanks," Haley said after she finished the entire glass.
"I made you some toast." Brooke said setting the plate in front of her. "And some juice."
Haley smiled as much as she could. "Do I really look that bad?"
"Honestly?"
"I'll take that as a yes."
"I'm sure no one will notice."
Haley rolled her eyes. "You know that's not true. Steven's mother is sure to comment on it the moment I walk in the room."
"Then don't go."
"And say what?"
"I don't know."
"You're officially the worst maid of honor ever."
"Only because you're not happy."
"I am happy."
"Just because you keep telling yourself that, isn't going to make it any more true." Brooke said giving Haley a sympathetic smile.
"I have to go," Haley said finishing her juice, and grabbing her keys.
"You know you're going to have to tell me about your night with Nathan Scott when you get back, don't you?"
"Nathan who?"
"Don't play that game with me Haley James. I know you, and you got laid." Brooke's face erupted in a smile.
"Whatever you say, Brooke."
Haley waited until she got in the hall to smile. She had her one night of ecstasy, and now she could move on with her life with Steven. Nathan was just a pleasant memory for when things became unbearable, and that was it.
