Chapter 8

"Did you like the movie?" Lucas questioned Brooke as they made their way to the parking lot.

"I wasn't really paying attention," she answered a sly smile crossing her lips.

Lucas blushed a bit before pulling her closer to him.

"Neither was I."

They walked through the parking lot to where Nathan's truck had once been, before either realized he was probably long gone.

"He always pulls this crap," Lucas said obviously embarrassed.

"My place is just around the corner, remember?" Brooke planted a soft kiss on his lips before the two began the short walk home.

-----

"Its about time. What in took you so long?" Steven questioned.

"I was sleeping," Haley replied, which wasn't a total lie.

"Must have been a pretty deep sleep."

"It was. I was tired."

"Because of your late night?"

"Are we really going to do this?" Haley asked annoyed.

"Do what?"

"Fight about that again. I thought I explained it to you."

"Do did I, but then, I ran into Amber." Steven immediately noticed how wide Haley's eyes got. "You wanna know where?"

"I'm sure you're going to tell me."

"I was at the florist, to pick you up some flowers because I felt bad about what happened this morning, when she came in. We chatted and then she said to tell you hi because she hadn't seen you in a couple of weeks. Haley, what in the hell is going on? Do you not want to do this?"

Haley sighed heavily. "Its not that," she said quietly.

"Then what is it? Because right now you've got me completely confused."

"Do you want some tea?" She asked trying to advert his attention anywhere else besides where she was the prior night.

"Don't do that Haley."

"You don't want tea?"

"No. I don't. I want you to stop avoiding the subject and tell me what the hell is going on with you."

Haley turned and walked into the kitchen, avoiding him altogether.

-------

Nathan looked around the bedroom and quickly realized it belonged to her roommate, although he couldn't remember what Lucas said her name was. And he really didn't care. What he did care about was why Haley had shoved him in there and who was at the door.

He could hear mumbling, but he wasn't able to make out what either of them was saying. So, he stood there, his ear pressed up against the door like an idiot trying to catch a bit of anything. Because whatever was forcing him to stay in that room was definitely something he thought he needed to hear.

-----

"So you want to tell me what happened back there with your friend…,"

"Haley."

"Yeah. So how does she know Nathan?" Lucas asked as he opened the door to the apartment building.

"Last night, you know how you stayed here?"

"Yeah."

"Well, last night Haley kind of stayed at your brother's."

"Oh." Lucas said quickly understanding things better. "And what? He kicked her out? He always does that."

Brooke shook her head. "Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"She just left."

Lucas immediately broke into a light chuckle. "Its about damn time."

"What? Don't like your brother?"

"Its not that. He's just always got these crazy stories. He's had them since we were in high school and unfortunately most of them have turned out to be true. Its just good to know that someone finally beat him at his own game."

"Which obviously isn't something he likes."

"No its not, but I get a good laugh out of it."

Brooke and Lucas were almost at her door when Brooke recognized a very familiar sound.

"Shit."

"What?" Lucas asked confused by the sudden change in Brooke's expression.

"Steven."

"Steven? Who's Steven? Don't tell me you have a boyfriend."

Brooke smiled momentarily at Lucas's question.

"No, I don't. But Haley does."

"So that's why she left?"

"I don't know. I don't think he's right for her, but she's still planning on marrying the loser."

"Marrying?"

"Yeah. In two weeks."

"Is that them yelling?"

Brooke nodded. "Its all they ever do."

"So why are they getting married?"

"That's what I keep asking. Now, we're going to have to go in there and save her."

"We're going in there?"

"Don't worry, I'll protect you." Brooke kissed him quickly before walking inside.

-----

"Damn it, Haley. Where were you?" Steven yelled.

"If you would just calm down, I would explain."

"Explain now."

"Not when you're like this."

"Like what?"

"Like your mother? Honestly, Steven, sometimes I think you're the same person."

"No."

"No, what?" Haley said angered at his sharp tone.

"You are not blaming my mother for this. She's not the one who can't or won't tell me where she was last night!.

-------

Nathan was about to give up trying to hear anything when he heard voices rising. It was definitely another guy in that room. And for some reason he was pissed at Haley. Although it wasn't hard to see why. The girl really could run your brain around in circles.

What he didn't like was what the guy wanted to know. Why was it such a big deal where she was last night, unless she was dating him. Finally, Nathan realized what was going on. 'I was suppose to be a one night stand!" He thought furiously. He was just about to storm in there when he heard another loud voice, this one much more high-pitched and happy.
