Chapter 9
"Hey Hales, I brought Lucas back with me," Brooke called as they entered, hoping she could end the drama ensuing between Haley and her not so pleasant fiancé.
Haley had never been more relieved to hear that voice in her entire life.
"Excuse me," Haley spat at Steven before leaving him alone in the kitchen.
"You missed a great movie."
"I thought you said you weren't wat…" Before Lucas could finish his sentence, Brooke's elbow had connected a little too hard with his side. She gave him an apologetic smile before turning her attention back to Haley.
"So what did you do?" Before Haley could answer, Steven appeared. "Steven," Brooke said simply. He just nodded. It was no secret that Brooke didn't like Steven and for that reason, he didn't like her. They only saw each other when necessary and when they did, it took everything for them to just be civil with one another.
"Brooke, can I talk to you for a second?" Haley questioned.
"Yeah. Luke, why don't you get a drink."
"That's her solution for everything," Steven mumbled. Brooke shot him an evil glare before following Haley to her room.
"So what was that all about?" Brooke asked plopping down on Haley's bed.
"I have a problem. A big problem," Haley said pacing quickly in front of Brooke.
"I give you permission to kick his ass to the curb. You know that."
"That's not what I'm talking about. Well, not totally." Haley sighed before sitting down. "Nathan."
"Did you talk to him?" Haley looked at Brooke guiltily. "OH MY GOSH.." Haley flinched at the loudness in her friend's voice and Brooke's voice immediately turned into a whisper. "You slept with him again."
Haley nodded. "And he's in your room."
Brooke's eyes widened. "Right now?" Haley nodded again. "Well I definitely created a distraction," she said with a light chuckle
"No you created a mess. A huge gigantic mess that is going to…this is not funny. Why are you laughing?"
"I know it's a mess, but its also like the best thing ever!"
"And how is that?"
"You have Nathan Scott in your apartment."
"And Steven. At the same time. They're both going to flip if they see the other. Besides, aren't you like seeing his brother? Are you sure you're not using him to get to Nathan?"
"Not at all. I like Luke, but Nathan is perfect for you."
"Nathan's an ass."
"Who you've had sex with twice in the last twenty-four hours."
"Three times," Haley corrected. Brooke proudly smiled.
"That's my girl. Now, you get rid of Steven and I'll take care of Nathan."
"What do you mean 'take care of'?"
"Don't worry Hales, I'll keep my hands off."
"I can't just kick Steven out."
"Why not? If anyone's an ass, its him."
"He's not. He just wants to know where I was last night and I can't really blame him."
"Then tell him."
"And cancel my wedding, I don't think so."
"Then tell Nathan."
Haley ran her fingers through her hair nervously. "I don't want to."
"I know you don't, but you can't keep him locked in my room forever."
"I'll talk to Steven."
Brooke pulled Haley into a hug before leaving the room.
They found Lucas and Steven sitting in dead silence. Both had a drink in their hand and Luke's was almost empty.
Brooke extended her hand to Lucas who gladly took it following her in a direction he knew lead to her bedroom. He just didn't know his brother was currently occupying it.
Nathan's eyes were firmly planted on the door when Brooke and Lucas walked in.
"What is he…" Before Lucas could finish, Nathan cut him off.
"Who in the hell is out there?"
"Just calm down."
"Is that her boyfriend? Does she have a boyfriend?"
"No, she has a …" This time it was Brooke cutting Lucas off.
"Why don't you let me handle this," she said a bit annoyed by Lucas at the moment. He nodded, sensing he was pushing the subject. He just really wanted to see his brother's face when he found out.
"She has a what?" There was still a heavy anger in his voice.
"Nothing. He's leaving now and then you two can talk."
"I don't want to talk. I want to leave. Hell, I don't even know why I stayed here this long." Brooke reached out to stop him, but it was too late.
------
"You have to go," Haley said flatly after Lucas and Brooke left the room.
"Not without an explanation." Steven was on his feet, he's eyes dead locked on Haley's.
"I can't talk to you right now."
"And why not? You don't have a good enough story yet?"
"Why are you like this? Can't you see that I just need time."
"Time for what?"
"Time to breathe, Steven. Everything is just a little too intense for me right now."
"Me. Me. Me. That's all I ever hear. What about me? What about what I'm going through?"
"What are you going through, Steven? Mother not giving you enough attention? Or has your father finally stopped supplying you with an ever so abundant amount of cash? Please tell me, what in your life is the least bit complicated."
"You." He stated simply.
"Then you shouldn't have any problem leaving." She opened the door waiting for him to exit.
"I'll call you tonight." He said as he walked out.
Haley leaned against the door, closing her eyes as she tried to collect herself. But the moment she opened them, she was met by the dark, cold eyes of Nathan Scott.
