In Darkness is Where the Angels Cry

Chapter 1: The Song

16 year old Kaoru Kamiya stood at the entrance of the opera house with her fingers resting gently on the grand oak doors. For years she had walked past this building and never spared it a passing glance, but now she was drawn to the threads of music that crept through its ancient walls. Carefully, she opened the door as silently as she could. As soon as she set one foot on the lush red carpeting she was assaulted with the melodious chords of a symphony. The song shook the foundation of her soul and left her empty and devastated. She stood silently amazed at how this song had managed to ensnare her so quickly and completely. A strangled sob escaped her throat as the melody continued, driving her spirit to a new level of sorrow.

Whoever had composed this, she thought, must have a past as dark as the night sky, but I know that this person is truly a wonderful person, because no one really evil could produce such wonderful music.

And it was then that, as if in tune with her thoughts, the song took a new turn. Suddenly there was hope and light in this world previously dominated by darkness and Kaoru dared to dream once more. It was as if ,before, evil had consumed her but now all the good things in life had suddenly made their appearance and she could be free again. Still, there was an undercurrent of despair waiting to resurface, waiting to drag her back under and steal away her joy.

Overcome by her fleeting emotions, she searched for the melody's source. In a few moments she found herself running up the steps of the stage and fast approaching a red haired man playing the piano. Suddenly her feet stopped and she stood by his side trying to catch her breath. Yet her presence went unnoticed by the man as he continued playing, his song now nearing its close. Seizing the moment, she took this opportunity to study the songs composer. The thing that caught her attention was not his bright red hair or his cross-shaped scar, but his strong, graceful hands. Then she took note of his handsome face and his unique hair and scar.

As the last few notes faded, Kaoru held her breath, anxious and full of anticipation. Slowly, he opened his eyes.

Okay, so I know this is falling away from my usual forte of writing, but I just had to write this. As weird as this may sound, it came to me in a dream. This story is just a break from another project and it will be a 4 chapter ficcie. Not exactally the happiest thing I've ever written, but its still Kenshin.
