Chapter 30, Part 2B; Follies at the Coven Day Parade:
Kai propped Luz's phone up as he started the recording and joined his sister's side.
"Hey, Mom! I know you're having confusing feelings about us staying in the Demon Realm, but we're recording this because I think we can find a middle ground," Kai said.
Luz nodded.
"This is a world of magic and beauty. Check it out!" she said.
Luz turned the camera to show Hooty hanging his skin up to dry in his skeleton form! Hooty looked at the two kids. Kai and Luz screamed in terror as they scrambled to close the curtains.
"Close it! Holy sh-!" Kai shouted as the camera cut off.
Minutes later:
The camera came back on as Kai and Luz were now in Bonesborough. Luz cleared her throat.
"Anyway. You should know that Kai and I are even learning magic," she said, pressing a light glyph.
Kai took the camera.
"And since Luz is the first human to ever learn glyph magic, it impresses everyone," he said.
Boscha was walking through but ended up bumping into Luz, causing her to get blinded by the light orb. Boscha screamed in pain as she glared at the two siblings.
"Hybrid! If your human sister ever does that again, I will set both of you on fire!" she threatened, drawing a spell circle.
"Boscha, wai-!" Kai tried to say before the camera cut off for the second time.
Later:
The camera turned on to show Luz and Kai in the halls of Hexside. Luz noticed that her hair had a small flame and quickly put it out.
"So the Demon Realm's a little…intense. But, there's no safer place than Hexisde School of Magic and Demonics," Kai said, turning the camera to show the other students walking through the halls.
"This is where Kai and I are learning everything there is to know about the Boiling Isles an-" Luz said before getting cut off by one of the students from the beast keeping class running past.
"Stampede!" he shouted.
Kai didn't have time to react as he was knocked down by a pack of animals, causing him to drop the phone. Luz grabbed the phone and sighed.
"That's enough of that," she said, stopping the recording.
Timeskip to after school:
Kai was leaning against the wall while Luz, Willow and Gus sat on the stairs discussing why Belos would wear a mask.
"I think he does it because he's shy. He's just evil and shy. It happens," Gus said.
"I heard there's just a mirror underneath," Willow said.
She looked around as if making sure no one was watching before leaning in.
"The real emperor was society all along," Willow whispered.
Gus rubbed his chin.
"Maybe he's so handsome that people have a hard time focusing on what he says. I get it. I can relate," he said.
He turned to Kai who was looking at the recording on Luz's phone with a forlorn expression on his face.
"Kai!" Gus said, getting into his face.
The older boy jumped and looked at the two younger kids.
"You and Luz saw Belos up close. What's he like under that mask?" Gus asked.
Kai and Luz looked at one another.
"Huh, We never got a good look," Luz said.
"I heard he's scarred from wild magic," Amity said, appearing beside Luz.
The Latina girl screamed as she fell to the ground. Kai chuckled as Luz turned to her girlfriend.
"What's wrong, Luz? Scared of your own girlfriend?" he teased, earning a blush from his sister.
"Well, I heard he previously worked as a bounty hunter and he's bruised from all the fights he was in," Viney whispered in Kai's ear.
Kai let out a yelp as he jumped slightly. Luz and Gus laughed as Amity giggled and Willow shook her head.
"Who's scared now, big bro?" Luz teased.
Kai rolled his eyes as Amity lightly smacked Luz on her shoulder.
"Be nice, Batata," she said.
Luz raised an eyebrow.
"Did you just call me a sweet potato?" she asked.
Amity nodded.
"Is that not a term of endearment? I'm still figuring out this human language book from Gus," she said, holding up a Spanish cookbook.
Kai blinked.
"I think you got the dictionary confused with cookbook, Gus," he said.
Luz pulled Amity into a hug.
"Aw! You're the sweet potato, Amity," she said, making Amity blush.
Viney chuckled.
"Three weeks of dating and you two already have pet names," she said.
Kai looked at her and smirked, wrapping an arm around Viney's waist and pulling her close.
"Do you want a pet name, preciosa?" he asked.
Viney blushed and smacked him in the chest as Kai laughed.
"So, did that Titan Blood come in handy?" Viney asked.
Kai and Luz both tensed.
"Did you finish building the door?" Willow asked.
"Did you guys visit your mom? Does she know about high fives too?" Gus asked.
The two siblings exchanged looks as they remembered what their mother told them.
"Um, we haven't used the door yet. Waiting for the perfect moment, ya know?" Luz said.
Kai looked at his watch.
"Oh, Luz, we gotta meet up with King and Aunt Eda in town," he said.
Luz nodded and kissed Amity on the cheek before making her way down the steps. Kai drew Blaze out and gave Viney a small kiss on the lips. The two siblings climbed onto Blaze.
"Later taters," Luz said as they flew off.
As they did, Amity noticed Luz's phone on the steps with the start of the video showing on the screen.
Later:
Kai, Eda, Luz and King were walking through Bonesborough.
"Come on, guys. There's no way your mom will make you leave the Demon Realm!" King said.
Eda nodded.
"Yeah! When she meets us, I'll make sure to put on the charm…that turns people into obedient zombies," Eda said.
Kai gave his aunt a glare.
"You are not turning my mom into a zombie," he said, his eyes dark.
Eda laughed nervously. Kai may be her nephew but even she knows he's scary when upset. Luz shook her head as they entered the center of town. The two teens then noticed all the decorations being hung around the square.
"Woah. What's with all the decorations?" Kai asked.
"They're probably prepping for the annual Coven Day Parade. Floats, streamers, fireworks--" King said before getting cut off.
"Ah, it's just a fancy way to kiss the emperor's…" Eda said before trailing off.
Luz had covered King's ears as she gave Eda a stern look. Eda sighed.
"Whatever, I'm just here to pick something up," she said, walking off.
King followed after her. Kai and Luz were about to when they overheard Kikimora.
"Mother, please! No, I'm not seeing anyone. Yes, I'm standing up straight. Listen, I can't come home. If I don't lead this parade, Belos will end my--No! No, I--O course I miss everyone. I…What? I can't choose! Hello? Mother? Mother?" Kikimora asked.
Kai and Luz exchanged remorseful looks before following their two friends who were standing at a private investigation booth.
"Hey, guys. I know what'll cheer you up," King said.
"Ah, no bread puns today, buddy," Luz said.
"What? No. I'm talking about hot goss, people," King said, climbing onto the stand.
"Hot goss buns. Bread pun! Anyway, guess why we're here!" King said.
Eda turned to him.
"King?" she asked, mildly annoyed.
"Eda hired someone to spy on her ex!" King said.
Eda squeaked as she blushed.
"Did you read my diary?!" she asked.
"And they're the head witch of the Bard Coven!" King exclaimed.
"Stop it!" Eda screamed, covering her ears.
"And they also--" King continued before getting cut off.
"Yes! They secretly led a rebel group against the Emperor and got captured! I was there!" Eda said.
King sucked a breath between his teeth.
"Ooh. I didn't read that far," he said.
Luz gasped in awe while Kai had his jaw dropped. Luz fell to the ground. Kai turned to his younger cousin.
"I think you killed Luz," he said.
"It was the "yeast" I could do," King joked, laughing.
After Luz recovered from the whole fangirling, she and Kai were looking at Raine's record.
"And then Raine battled their fellow coven heads? And sacrificed everything to save Eda? It's just like Hectate and Azura in Book 5!" Luz said, tears running down her face.
Kai noticed a picture that caught his attention and grabbed it. It showed a young Raine and Kendrick. They were both laughing as Raine carried Kendrick on their back.
"Raine and my dad were friends?" Kai asked.
Eda nodded.
"Raine and Kenny were friends as soon as they met, hell, Kendrick made them your godparent," Eda said.
"So they knew about my Dad…?" Kai asked.
Eda nodded as she grabbed the folder from Luz.
"According to this, Raine is still working with the Emperor's Coven which doesn't make sense. They were seen as a traitor," Eda said.
Kai noticed something and pointed.
"Well, maybe we can find out what happened by talking to them. Look," he said.
The others looked to where he pointed and saw a billboard of Raine.
"Nice thinking, nephew. But if they're here for the parade, they'll probably be surrounded by scouts. We need someone on the inside to lend us a hand," Eda said.
They thought about it before Luz noticed a saddened Kikimora trip over a piece of wood as two coven scouts walked over her. Luz turned to the others with a grin. Kai frowned and shook his head.
"There is no way she'll give us the time of day," Kai said.
Later:
Kai sighed as Kikimora was telling Luz about the problem with her mom.
"And--And then she said if I don't make it back for the family reunion, I'd be banished from Palm Stings and the family home! But I've failed so many missions and if I leave my job now, I'll be banished from my life!" Kikimora cried.
She sobbed into her hands as Luz patted her shoulder.
"There you go. It's gonna be okay. Maybe there's a way we can help each othe--OOP!" Luz yelped as Kai pulled her aside.
"Are you crazy?! Kikimora nearly turned Aunt Eda into stone!" Kai said.
"Let's not forget she attacked you two back in Latissa and she didn't blink when she tossed Kai and your girlfriend down a pit," Eda added.
She folded her arms.
"Ooh! She is bad, and not the hot kinda bad," Eda said.
Kai looked at her before shaking his head.
"The point is, I can't trust her as far as I can throw her and with how small she is, it's a pretty far throw," he said.
"But this could be the only way Eda could talk to Raine! Isn't it worth the risk?" Luz asked.
Eda folded her arms and looked away.
"Maybe," she mumbled.
Eda leaned towards Luz, narrowing her eyes.
"But what are you getting out of this?" she asked.
Luz looked towards Kikimora who was pacing back and forth.
"On the one hand, I miss my family. On the other, Belos is not a forgiving man. But I'm just a party planner at this point," she ranted.
Luz sweated nervously.
"I'm just a sucker for romantic reunions?" Luz said.
"This is true. What about you, Kailin?" Eda asked, turning to her nephew.
Kai blinked.
"I want to meet my godparent?" he said, smiling sheepishly.
Eda looked at him with narrowed eyes before sighing.
"Ugh, fine!" she said.
Kikimora looked at them.
"Fine? What's fine? What are you cretins planning?" she asked.
Luz placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Worry not, Kikimora. We're gonna help you by kidnapping you and Raine!" Luz declared.
"What?" the others asked.
The next day:
The sun rose over the horizon as Eda was digging around in the trash. She pulled out an old gray tarp. She sniffed it and gagged before smiling and walking off. Kai and Luz were at Morton's shop gathering some potions for the scheme.
"Thanks Morton!" Kai said.
Hooty stretched towards the merchant and puked out some snails and an animal's skeleton.
"Keep the change," Hooty said as he followed Luz and Kai.
As they walked away, King was meeting with Edric in an alleyway.
"I call it the "Ed Ricochet 11". That's how many times I was sent to the Healing Coven," Ed said as he pulled out a giant firework from inside his coat.
"Ooh! Wait, are these legal?" King asked.
"Would that make you more or less interested in buying them?" Edric asked.
"Hmm…" King mumbled.
Later:
King cackled as he walked towards with a handful of fireworks. Kai was attaching a wheel to a cart as Luz jumped down next to him.
"Nice work everyone," she said.
Kai wiped his brow as he stood up and walked over to a chalkboard.
"Okay so let's go over the plan one last time. King and Hooty will pilot the float during the parade. Once it gets to the halfway point, you two will set off all the glyphs, potions, and fireworks to distract people," Kai said.
"With my love of mayhem and Hooty's desperate need for attention, This'll be a cake walk!" King said.
"I'll be hidden in the crowd so when Kikimora sends the guards to go and investigate, I'll make a mist so Aunt Eda and Luz can get her and Raine and escape," Kai said.
"Yeah, the coven can't banish Kiki if she's missing! She'll get the best of both worlds! She'll set an example for all of us!" Luz exclaimed.
Everyone looked at her confused while Kai looked concerned. Luz cleared her throat.
"Um, I mean--Eda gets to talk to Raine. It's romantic!" she said.
Eda scoffed as she blushed.
"It's not that romantic," she said.
"Witch, this is the peak of Mount Romance!" Hooty said.
King raised an eyebrow.
"Hooty, what would you know?" King asked.
"I've been around!" Hooty said.
Luz looked through her pockets for her phone but didn't find it.
"Hey, bro, have you seen my phone?" she asked her brother.
Kai looked at her.
"It's probably at the Owl House," he said.
He then pulled earpieces and handed them to Luz, King and Eda.
"Put these in and use them to communicate with one another and to let the others know if we need help," Kai said.
They all nodded and placed the earpieces in.
At Willow's House:
Willow was in her room working out in her room when a knock on her door was heard. Placing the dumbbells down, Willow grabbed a towel as she walked to the door. She opened it and saw Amity with Luz's phone.
"Amity!" Willow said in surprise.
Amity gave her a sheepish smile.
"Uh, hey, Willow. It's, uh, been a while since I came here on my own," she said.
Willow rubbed her neck.
"Yeah, I guess it has…" she said.
She noticed that Amity seemed a bit stressed.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
Amity walked in, ranting.
"So, I've talked with Viney and we both agree that Luz and Kai have been acting really strange and we think they're lying about their trip to the Human Realm and Luz left her phone, uh, phun? Ugh, her thingy at school and--," Amity said before falling onto Willow's bed.
She screamed into the pillows as Willow walked towards her.
"You need to slow down for me," Willow said.
Amity sat up.
"Luz says she and Kai haven't been to the human realm, but I just get the feeling that she's lying and Viney's feeling the same way about Kai. And I can find out the truth by watching this," she said, holding up the recording on Luz's phone.
"But I'm not going to invade their privacy like that. Would you?" Amity asked her friend.
Willow made a so-and-so sign before shrugging. Amity giggled.
"Wil, you're not helping," she said, smiling.
She stopped talking as Willow suddenly stepped towards her threateningly.
"Listen, Blight, if you want my advice, there's something you have to do for me first," Willow said.
Amity gulped before Willow smiled.
"Do you still know how to braid hair?" she asked.
Willow sat down on the floor. Amity blinked before chuckling.
"Okay, but I'm a little rusty," she said, taking Willow's hair down.
Amity smiled.
"I know there are still things we need to work out, but, I'm glad we can be like this again," she said, softly.
Willow gave a small smile.
With Kikimora:
The small demon was pacing around.
"Oh, this isn't going to work. I can't believe I let them talk me into this," she said to herself.
"Who talked you into what?" a voice asked.
Kikimora jumped and turned to see Raine as they bent down beside her.
"Raine? How long have you been there? Shouldn't you be practicing your, um, parade wave?" Kikimora asked.
Raine groaned.
"You know I hate these things. Talking to people. Waving to people. People," They said.
Kikimora and Raine shivered.
"But I'm just happy to play my part," Raine said, smiling.
"You seem so much more calm than before," Kikimora said.
A shadow loomed over and Kikimora gasped. Standing above them was an elderly with wrinkled, ivory skin, long, green hair that resembles plant matter and pale violet eyes.
"Oh, why wouldn't they be? They were sick for a while, but thanks to me, they're good as new!" she said.
"Terra Snapdragon! And what brings you out of your greenhouse, Head Witch?" Kikimora asked.
Raine turned to her.
"Terra's been helping me recover. I can't remember anything with these…Ugh! Headaches," they winced, holding their head.
"Here, sprout. Drink your tea," Terra said, handing Raine a cup of tea.
She dropped some tea leaves into the cup. Raine blew on the tea and drank some of it.
"There you go. Now. You're gonna get on top of that float and wave to thousands of chumps all night. Remember to lead with your elbow," Terra said, helping Raine to their feet.
"I'm on it," they said.
Kikimora snuck to the side of the float.
"Terra could ruin everything," she whispered, dialing a number into her phone when a shadow loomed above her.
Kikimora jumped and hid the phone behind her as Terra stood above her.
"You're not trying to leave, are you? Come. The parade is about to begin," she said.
Later that night:
The streets of Bonseborough were filled with people as they cheered for the floats that passed by. Raine was on the Emperor's Coven float as they nervously played their violin. Kai was hidden amongst the crowd as he watched the parade. He was wearing his navy blue cloak and had his hood up so he wouldn't be spotted. Up above, Eda and Luz were jumping across the rooftops before landing on a roof that gave them a clear view of the parade. Luz looked down at her watch.
"It's almost time," she said.
Eda nodded before noticing something.
"Is that our float?" she asked.
Luz turned to see their float of Emperor Belos.
"Not bad right?" she said.
Inside the float, King and Hooty were pulling on all sorts of levers, cranks and switches. King reached over to pull a lever which caused the float to do a finger gun. The crowd cheered loudly for the float.
"That was the signal," Luz said.
Eda stood up.
"Let's move," she said, jumping off the roof.
Luz moved to follow her but decided against it.
"Um, I need help getting down," she said.
Eda sighed and helped her down. Luz pressed her hand to her ear.
"Kai? Are you ready?" she asked.
Back with Kai:
Kai nodded as he watched closely for the signal.
"I'm in position. Just waiting for the signal," he said.
Just as he said that, some fireworks went off into the sky.
'Right on time,' Kai thought to himself.
"Don't just stand there, you hangnails! I command you to investigate!" Kai heard Kikimora demand.
He looked through the crowd to see Luz and Eda behind the Emperor's coven float. The hybrid boy summoned a flame in his right hand and an orb of water in his left. Kai mixed the elements together and let out a giant cloud of mist, alarming a few of the crowd and alerting the coven guards. Kikimora had snuck to the back of the float where Luz had picked her up.
"Oh! I can't believe we're being taken against our will! What sayeth you, fiend?" Kikimora asked.
Luz blinked.
"Uhh! That's right! I, Hecate, will whisk you away to my kingdom of mirrors and snakes!" Luz declared in a deep voice.
In the crowd, Amity facepalmed while Viney shook her head.
"Yeah, that's definitely Luz," Viney commented.
Amity nodded when she saw Kai on the far side of the crowd and nudged Viney.
"There's Kai!" she whispered.
Viney nodded.
"I'll get him. You get Luz," she said.
Amity nodded and the two girls went their separate ways to confront their respective partners.
Back with Luz, the young girl glared down at Kikimora.
"Hey, come on. I didn't know I had to prepare lines," she said, not noticing Raine coming up behind her.
The Bard witch was about to cast a spell when vines wrapped around them as Eda appeared.
"Knock it off you two. Let's get goin'," Eda said, tossing Raine over her shoulder.
She pulled out an invisibility glyph and held her breath as she disappeared. Luz did the same as the mist cleared. Everyone gasped when they saw that Raine and Kikimora were gone.
"Boys, we've got Kiki and Raine," Luz said into her earpiece.
"Okay, I'll meet you at the dock, Luz. King, Aunt Eda and Hooty, you guys get out of there," Kai said.
"Roger," The others said.
Eda ran into an alleyway as the coven guards chased after Hooty and King who were using the float to escape. Eda untied Raine and hugged them tightly.
"Raine! I'm so glad you're okay!" she said.
Raine moved back from the hug.
"Eda? What are you doing here?" they asked.
"I had to make sure you were okay after that fight with Darius and Eber," Eda answered.
Raine gave her a confused look.
"What fight?" they asked.
Eda gave a weak chuckle.
"It was just a few weeks ago., I was with you," Eda said, reaching her hand out.
Raine pushed her hand away,
"Eda, I spent the last month sick in bed. And we…we haven't spoken in years," they said.
Eda gasped as she gained a hurt look.
"Look, I don't know what you want with me but I'm the head of a coven now. And I can't associate with wild witches anymore. So move aside," Raine said.
Eda clenched her fists.
"No," she said.
She placed down a plant glyph and a wall of vines appeared blocking Raine from leaving.
"I'm not leaving until I get through to you," Eda said, drawing Owlbert out.
Raine huffed and summoned their violin.
"Fine. We can do this the hard way," they said.
With Luz:
Luz turned visible as she ran from the crowd, holding Kikimora.
"Oh, my gosh, it's working. It's actually working!" she exclaimed.
"We're visible? We need to disappear again! If we're caught, she will end us!" Kikimora said.
"Who will end us?" Luz asked.
The ground started to shake and Luz stopped running to see the concrete cracking as vines sprouted from the ground. The Latina girl ducked into an alleyway and peeked around the corner. The vines opened to reveal
"It's the Head witch of the Plant Coven, Terra Snapdragon," Kikimora said.
"Oh, my word. Where could Kiki have gone?" Terra asked herself.
Luz and Kikimora exchanged worried glances.
"Such a valued member of the coven must be found post haste!" the Plant Head said.
A small fly flew towards her.
"Have you seen her, little fly?" Terra asked before summoning a flytrap and killed the small fly.
"Guess not," she said, smirking.
Luz pressed a hand to her ear.
"Kai, Kiki and I ran into some trouble and we might need some back up," she whispered.
"I'm a bit far right now, but I'll try to get to you," Kai responded.
Luz pulled out another invisibility glyph and took a breath before disappearing.
"What a shame that Kikimora would disappear right before her promotion," Terra said.
Kikimora let out a small squeak as Luz knocked over a bottle.
"All the missions she would have led. The shiny new bad, the respect," Terra said, drawing a spell circle to make one of the vines stand up.
"Ah, well. Guess we'll have to find someone else!" The plant head said as she sent a spiked vine towards Luz.
The vine stopped and Terra turned to see an Abomination holding the vine back. Luz released her breath as she saw the vine inches from her face. She turned and ran off. Terra scoffed.
"Ugh! Another pest," she said, using the vine to squish the abomination.
Luz turned her earpiece on.
"Kai! That back up would be great right now!" she exclaimed.
"I'm still too far from you. Just try and make it to the docks," Kai said.
Luz nodded as Amity appeared beside her.
"Sweet Potato! How did you--?" Luz asked before getting cut off.
"Book 5, chapter 8, Azura pretends to kidnap Hecate--" Amity said.
"During the Ice festival to save her from the wizard clan! You remembered my favorite part," Luz said.
"Yes, but right now, I just want to keep my girlfriend from being sent to the conformatorium…again," Amity said, using her abomination magic to make a skateboard.
"Cool!" Luz said as the two girls climbed on.
With Kai:
Kai was running through the streets as he tried to make it to Luz. She sounded like she was in big trouble and he wanted to get there before it was too late. He stopped running and turned to run into an alleyway as the coven guards were still chasing Hooty and King. He looked around the corner to make sure the coast was clear. As he did, a hand grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back. Kai yelped and knocked the person's hand off before turning around with his hand on his dagger. He stopped when he saw Viney behind him, arms folded.
"Viney?! What are you doing here?!" He whispered, pulling his hood down.
The brown haired girl glared at him.
"I could ask you the same thing. Why are you trying to ruin the Covens Day Parade?" Viney asked.
Kai rubbed his neck.
"I'm….trying to help my aunt talk to her ex?" he lied.
Viney raised an eyebrow, unconvinced with the lie.
"Kai, I know when you're lying. Does this have something to do with your trip to the human realm?" Viney asked.
Kai rubbed his arm and looked away. Viney walked towards him and grabbed his hand.
"Kai, if there's something bothering you, you can tell me," she said.
The hybrid boy looked at his girlfriend and sighed.
"I…" Kai started before getting cut off.
"Hey!"
The two teens turned to see some coven scouts surrounding them.
"Shit. V, I promise after we deal with these guys, I'll explain everything," Kai said, drawing Blaze out.
"You better," Viney mumbled as she pulled out her Palisman.
Back with Eda:
Raine used their violin bow to shoot blades of magic at Eda. Eda grunted as she jumped over the attacks.
"Please. Rainstorm stop it," Eda begged as she stood up straighter.
"I don't want to hurt you, Eda but you're not giving me much of a choice," Raine said.
Eda panted.
"Come on, Raine! I've known you long enough to know you're going easy on me," she said.
Raine shook their head before playing their violin. A yellow storm cloud appeared above them and lighting bolts struck the ground. Eda dodged the bolts and pulled out an invisibility glyph as she charged at Raine. She went invisible. Raine gasped and looked around for her. They gritted their teeth before lifting their violin bow to attack. Eda reappeared and blocked their bow with her staff.
"Did you really forget about what happened? What we talked about? Don't tell me you forgot about Kendrick, the one who made you the godparent of his son," Eda said.
Raine's face fell at the mention of their old friend but shook their head.
"Why won't you just leave me alone?" They asked, plucking a string.
Eda gasped and grunted as she pushed back into the wall of vines. She looked at Raine with a sad look. Raine breathed heavily.
"For old time's sake, I'll give you one last chance. Move. Please," They said.
Eda stood up and shook her head as she held her staff. Raine huffed.
"So be it," Raine said, raising their violin bow.
"I think I heard something over here!"
"Head Witch! Are you there?"
"Surround the area!"
Eda reached for an invisibility glyph but gasped when she couldn't find one. Raine saw the glyph on the ground and picked it up. Eda looked at them and Raine handed the glyph to her.
"Go home. Maybe travel for a bit. Just don't contact me again," Raine said as they turned away from Eda.
"I work for the Emperor after all," they said.
Eda sighed and placed the invisibility glyph on her chest, disappearing. Raine clenched their fists as a tear ran down their face. They wiped it away and turned to go back to the parade.
Back with Kai and Viney:
After dealing with the coven scouts, Kai and Viney managed to get to the dock before Luz. Right now, they were waiting for Luz to get here.
"So, wait, you and Luz are trying to help the person who threw you and Amity down a pit get back to her family?" Viney asked.
Kai nodded.
"Basically. I still don't trust Kikimora but Luz always had a big heart so you can't really argue with her," he said.
Viney chuckled. Kai looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
"What?" he asked.
"You act all tough but when it comes to Luz, you're softer than griffin feathers," she teased, poking Kai on his nose.
Kai scrunched his nose up as he blushed slightly but didn't respond. Viney giggled.
"What's with that face? I think it's sweet that you cared about your sister so much," she said.
Kai rolled his eyes as Luz, Kikimora and Amity came up to them on a skateboard made by one of Amity's abominations.
"Amity? What are you doing here?" Kai asked.
"Keeping my girlfriend and her headstrong brother from getting sent to the conformatorium," Amity responded.
Kai nodded as Luz helped Kikimora climb onto Princess.
"Okay, Kikimora. Princess here will get you back to your family in Palm Stings by morning. She's a good girl and I'm sad to say goodbye, but Bump couldn't keep her at his place anymore," Luz said as she placed Kikimora onto the saddle.
She placed a whistle around Kikimora's neck.
"Isn't this great? You'll see everyone at the reunion, and when you return, you can brag about your daring escape! You're walking proof that you don't have to choose between worlds!" Luz exclaimed.
She jumped down from the hand dragon as the other three teens looked at her with raised eyebrows.
"You've been such a help to me,hybrid and human. You two really are kind people and utter fools!" Kikimora said, cackling.
Kai pulled Blaze out as Amity and Viney got into fighting stances. Luz turned to Kikimora, surprised.
"What?!" she exclaimed.
"Palm Stings can burn for all I care! You heard Terra. They want to promote me! Me!" Kikimora said.
"She could've been lying," Amity said.
The four teens froze as Princess stood above them.
"That's a risk I'm willing to take. Maybe as a thank you, I could give Belos a few gifts. A troublemaking human. The little fire starter from Eclipse Lake and-- oh! The hybrid son of Kendrick Clawthorne," Kikimora said.
Kai turned to Luz.
"I don't like to say "I told you so" but I feel obligated to say it now so I told you so," he said.
Luz glared at her brother.
"Now's not the time for that, Hermano!" she said as she pulled out an invisibility glyph.
Kai grabbed one as well. He and Luz grabbed Viney and Amity's hands before they disappeared just as Princess tried to crush them. The four teens reappeared as they stood on the other side of the docks. Luz pulled two ice glyphs out and handed one to Viney as Kai summoned a flame in his hand and Amity casted a fire spell.
"Kai, Ami, now!" Luz said as she and Viney placed the ice glyphs down.
Amity and Kai fired at the two ice blocks, making a cloud of mist. The teens ran out of the mist as Princess chased after them. Kai turned around and gripped his staff. He then used Blaze to shoot a sheet of frost at Princess, freezing the hand dragon and causing her to fall onto the docks and into the boiling seas. The four kids turned to run off but stopped when Princess and Kikimora appeared in front of them, covered in melted ice.
"Yes. Thank you, Kai and Luz, for all the help," Kikimora said.
"You're welcome!" Luz said.
Viney and Amity looked at her confused while Kai facepalmed.
"I mean…ah, damn it!" Luz said.
Princess stood tall as she opened her mouth, ready to devour the four teens. Kai got into a fighting stance as Viney grabbed his arm and Luz and Amity held hands. As Princess prepared to strike, vines sprouted out from the water and tied the hand dragon to the ground, knocking Kikimora off. The small demon grunted as she was tied down as well
"Oh, Kiki, try not to get ahead of yourself. The Emperor has a great many plans, but causing a riot by hurting a couple of children is not one of them," Terra said.
"Terra! Shouldn't you be babysitting the bard?" Kikimora asked.
The plant head chuckled.
"I wasn't sent here to watch over Raine. I was sent here to watch over you. The promotion is real, you just had to prove your dedication," Terra said, releasing Kikimora.
Kikimora looked up at her.
"Did I pass?" she asked.
"Unfortunately, yes." Terra said in a dry voice.
Kikimora squealed.
"So? What's the promotion? Who's under my command? What do I get?" she asked.
Terra leaned down to her level.
"You get to live," she said.
Kikimora gulped. Kai had his staff held up as the fireworks at the parade went off. Terra groaned as she stood up.
"Come, Kiki. Let's head back to the parade," she said, snapping her fingers.
The vines took Kikimora and Princess underwater. Terra turned to the four teens.
"The Emperor says he's looking forward to meeting you, human," she said.
Her eyes landed on Kai and she gave a smirk.
"Especially you, Kailin. Until then, happy coven day," she said, sinking into the water.
Once she was gone, the four teens sighed in relief as they sat down. Luz hugged Amity and Viney tightly.
"You two are the best! Thanks for helping us back there," Luz said, breaking the hug.
"Yeah. How can we ever thank you?" Kai asked.
"Maybe you can tell us about this?" Amity asked, pulling out Luz's phone.
Kai's eyes widened as Luz gasped.
"Don't worry, we haven't watched it," Viney said, placing a hand on Kai's arm.
"But you guys did finish the portal door. You did see your mom. And…It looks like it didn't go well," Amity said.
Luz looked at her shoes while Kai pulled his legs to his chest. They looked like they were both holding back tears.
"We're sorry," Luz said.
Viney placed a hand on Kai's shoulder.
"Hey, I understand this situation is crazy and I think I speak for both me and Amity when I say that we're okay taking things one day at a time," she said.
"But we can't help if we don't know what's going on," Amity said.
Kai rubbed at his hair.
"This being in a different dimension is tough and don't get me wrong, I love being here but what's the point of it if someone I care about is getting hurt?" he said.
"And Amity, you looked so hopeful. You were even learning Spanish. And I thought if I helped out Kikimora, maybe there'd be hope for me and Kai," Luz said.
Viney and Amity looked at each other before the younger girl handed Luz her phone.
"Tell us what happened," Amity said.
Kai and Luz looked at each other before smiling at their respective girlfriends.
"Okay," Kai said.
The quartet stood up and began walking back to the parade as Kai and Luz started telling them about what happened in the human realm.
Later:
Kai, Luz, Amity, Viney, Eda, King and Hooty were all sitting on a roof as they watched the parade from above. Kai leaned against the chimney as Kikimora walked up to the mic.
"Um, thank you, Bonesborough, for joining us during this year's Coven Day Parade. This year is extra special because the Emperor himself has an announcement to make," Kikimora said.
A giant hologram of Belos appeared above the stage.
"Thank you, everyone. Together we are perfecting the Coven System as the Titan intended. The Day of Unity will be in exactly two months, when the tide is at its lowest and the moon obscures the sun. At that time, we will journey to the head of the isles, and there, the worthy shall inherit a utopia free of wild magic," The Emperor said before the projection changed to show a tapestry of the nine main coven sigils.
Kai stood up straighter as the others gasped.
"Free of wild magic? How's he supposed to do that? Is that even possible?" King asked.
Viney stood up to place a hand on her boyfriend's back as Kai and Eda gained worried looks. The projection turned back to show Belos.
"There is one more thing I'd like to share with you. I've always hid my face, out of fear. But because of your support, I can finally take off this mask," Belos said.
Eda scoffed.
"So phony. He's trying to distract us from his crazy utopia talk! Too bad it won't work," she said.
The crowd gasped and the group turned to see Belos take off his mask, showing that he was a elderly man with fair skin, long graying hair and blue eyes. He also had a long green scar going over his right eye.
"Thank you, Boiling Isles," Belos said.
The crowd cheered.
"Happy Coven Day, everyone!" Belos said before the projection was cut off.
The crowd cheered even louder while the group was left with worry.
"Is…Belos planning something? And why did he say he was going to meet you again?" Amity asked Luz.
Luz didn't know how to answer as she pulled Amity into a hug.
"And what did that lady mean when she said, "especially Kai"? Didn't he already meet you guys? Is there something going on that we don't know about? Are you in danger? What's gonna happen?" Viney asked Kai.
Kai held Viney's hand as he looked at the crowd.
"I don't know. But for now…we'll take things one day at a time," he said.
Luz had one arm around Amity as the purple-haired girl leaned against her girlfriend's shoulder. Kai placed a hand on Luz's other shoulder. He didn't know what this "Day of Unity" was and what Belos planned to do but he does know one thing…he's going to be ready.
A/N: I'm alive, don't worry! Sorry that it took so long for me to update. I was having some issues with my school computer and then I felt a bit under the weather but I'm back now and ready to deliver some action packed chapters!)
