Adventures With Kate and The Sitter
Chapter One – The Interview
"Jane, I really think we need to find a sitter. Twice in the last month one of us had to take time off to pick up one of the children when your mother or my parents weren't available. Last time I was in the middle of an autopsy and you were out tracking down a suspect." Maura told Jane.
"Yeah, we should. Do you have any ideas?" Jane asked her wife.
"Yes, I have contacted the service again and they will be sending over a few more prospects in the next few days, andyour mother actually told me of a friend of the family that has a daughter that would be perfect for Kate. Kate is the most adventurous one of our children and she is who we need to make sure whoever we get can get along with her." Maura said.
"That's true. Kate can be a handful at times." Jane offered, "and Kate didn't like those last few prospects at all. She was glued to you and didn't want to even talk with the last person, so yeah, a few more prospects would be nice. We will find someone that Kate clicks with. It was kind of funny though when Kate wouldn't let you sit down because her little body was wrapped around your legs and she wasn't moving, not even for me. I knew right then that person was a solid 'no.' The next one was a little better but she still hung on to you. We have interviewed like five people already. That is five people that have made it through my first round of the selection process."
"I know love, it was a horrible experience. I really don't want to put Kate through that again, but we need help. Okay, I will speak with Angela and maybe this daughter of a friend of the family will be the one that makes a connection with Kate." Maura said.
The next morning when Maura arrived at work, she immediately called Angela. "Good morning, Angela I was wondering if you could provide the contact information for the young lady you said might be interested in babysitting for us."
"Sure, sweetheart I will text it to you as soon as we get off of the phone." Angela replied as they hung up.
Once Maura received the information, she called the young lady. "Hello." The young lady said when she answered the phone.
"Kelly, my name is Dr. Maura Isles. Angela Rizzoli gave me your contact information and stated that you might be interested in babysitting for us." Maura replied.
"Yes, Dr. Isles she told me you might call." Kelly stated.
"We would like to meet with you. When would you be available?" Maura asked hoping Kelly would have availability soon.
"I am free tonight." Kelly offered.
"Oh, that would be great, is 6 o'clock good for you? I can text you our address."
"That works for me."
"Thank you, we will see you at 6." They spoke for a few more minutes and when Maura ended the call, she immediately sent her their address and then sent Jane a text to let her know. They had an early dinner and when they were done with the cleanup all the children wanted to go upstairs and read or play in their rooms.
"Kate, can you stay down here with us? There is someone we would like you to meet" Jane informed Kate.
"Yes, Mama," Kate replied excitedly. She loved meeting new people. At 6 PM sharp the doorbell rang. Kate jumped up to go with her mommy to answer the door. Maura opened the door. Kate was standing behind her clinging onto her legs. Although she liked meeting new people, she was always shy at first. Jane was several steps behind them.
"Dr. Isles?" Kelly said as Maura nodded and opened the door wider so Kelly could enter.
"Kelly, this is my wife, Jane, and our youngest child, four-year-old Kate." Jane nodded when Maura said her name and Kate smiled and waved from behind her mommy.
Kate immediately went to Jane and grabbed her hand as she started walking to the living room so they could sit down and talk. Kate climbed up in Jane's lap. Before Maura sat down, she asked, "Kelly, would you like something to drink?"
"No thank you, Dr. Isles." Kelly politely replied.
"Please, call me Maura." She said as she sat down next to Jane and Kelly sat down across from them. Maura explained, "We have three other children, MJ, who is 8, and our twins AJ and Lilly, who are almost 6. We will call them down shortly. We wanted you to meet the two of us and Kate first. Kate is the one that you would be spending the most time with."
Maura and Jane questioned Kelly about her background. Jane asked, "Where are you from originally?"
Kelly replied, "I am originally from Northern Florida but we moved to Northern Georgia when my dad got a promotion at work."
Before they could continue Kate looked at Kelly and said, "You talk funny."
Maura glanced over to Kate and simply told her, "Kate, that's not nice to say. Kelly has an accent. That is why she talks differently then we do." Kate just wrinkled her nose as she was trying to decipher what her mommy was telling her.
"It's alright, Maura. I get that all the time. I do have an accent Kate because I am from the south." Kelly smiled at Kate and she smiled back. Kate climbed down out of Jane's lap and walked over to Kelly and climbed into her lap. Kelly gladly accepted Kate and hugged her. Jane and Maura smiled, Kate liked Kelly. That was a start in the right direction.
Maura asked Kelly, "Where did you go to school? You had mentioned that you were a college student in our brief conversation earlier."
"Yes, I went to Georgia State and majored in Early Childhood Education and then my mother got sick and passed away. After a little while I felt like a change of scenery was needed. I applied to several schools and BCU accepted me. BCU was my first choice. I will be attending BCU and working on my Masters in Child Psychology part-time for the first semester. I will see how that goes. Right now, that allows me to be available to assist you before and after school, as needed. I didn't want to start full-time at BCU until I get settled here. I have always liked Boston. It's nice being here because I am a huge Boston Red Sox fan and now that I live here, I can go to some of their games."
"You are a Red Sox fan?" Jane asked surprised that someone from Georgia would be a Red Sox fan instead of an Atlanta Braves fan.
"Yes, my father was from this area originally. He passed away when I was a little girl but he loved the Red Sox. We used to sit and watch all the games together. I miss that, I miss him."
Kelly looked kind of sad and Kate put her hand on Kelly's cheek and said, "It's okay, you can watch them with us now and go with us to their games, right Mama?"
"Yes Kate. How about you run upstairs and get your brothers and sister so that they can meet Kelly. Can you do that for me?" Jane asked a very excited Kate. Jane and Maura had already decided that if Kelly didn't pass the Kate test, they wouldn't bother introducing the other children to her.
Kate turned around and said to Kelly, "I will be right back with the rest of my family so that you can meet them." And with that Kate climbed down out of Kelly's lap and walked quickly up the stairs so she could tell MJ, AJ and Lilly to come downstairs.
A few minutes later all of the children were sitting on the floor in front of their parents except for Kate who after asking for permission climbed back into Kelly's lap.
When MJ spotted their guest, he walked up to her and said, "Hello, I'm MJ." He offered her his hand to shake. Kelly smiled at him and shook his hand. She was impressed, he was such a gentleman. AJ and Lilly who had sat down already immediately got up and walked over to Kelly and introduced themselves to Kelly and shook her hand.
Kate looked at the twins and said, "Excuse me, I need to take my seat." Once AJ and Lilly moved, she climbed back up in Kelly's lap. Jane was trying to hold back her laughter. Maura on seeing Jane's expression slapped her lightly on the arm.
MJ didn't waste any time in asking Kelly, "Are you going to be helping our mommies by looking after us occasionally?"
"If your mothers would like for me too, I would be honored." Kelly politely replied. Jane and Maura shook their heads. They would like that. Kate gave Kelly a hug.
Maura was the first to speak, "Kelly, I think it is quite apparent that the children like you. If you are serious, we would like to offer you the position. We can discuss the particulars later when the children are not present."
"I am serious. I would love that." Kelly replied and the seven of them talked for a little bit until the children wanted to go back upstairs and read, except for Kate, she stayed on Kelly's lap until Kelly was ready to leave.
As Kelly mentioned she needed to get home, Kate slid off of her lap and walked with her hand in hand to the door. Jane opened the door for her and Kelly bent down to give Kate a hug and Kate kissed her on the cheek and said, "Good night, Kelly, I hope you can come over and play soon." Kate then walked away and headed upstairs.
Jane told Kelly, "I think you have made an impression on our youngest. We will update the children's likes and dislikes that is located on the refrigerator along with all of the emergency information. I am happy things worked out. Thank you for coming over tonight and meeting with us."
"You are very welcome. Angela told me she thought I would be a perfect fit for your family and she warned me that Kate was the boss and if Kate liked me then I was in, if she didn't well there were other families that I could meet with."
"My Ma really said that?" Jane was surprised that her mother would be so upfront and honest with someone she hardly knew.
"Yes, she said Kate is a doll but picky." Kelly smiled at them and they smiled back.
Maura replied, "Yes, she can be a handful at times but she is a sweetheart and very adventurous."
"Thank you for this evening and please let me know when I can be of service for you." Kelly said as she departed the house.
After Jane shut and locked the door she simply said, "I like her."
Maura said, "That's nice love, but you heard what your mother told her, Kate is the boss. So as long as Kate liked her that is all that mattered."
Jane laughed and they headed upstairs to get the children ready for bed. They knew after bath/shower time, they would have to read some from each of the children's books. They didn't mind though, they enjoyed when work didn't call them away from their nighttime routine.
