Tracking the Mirror Mistress
-Summer 2022-
"Why did you call me here?" Barry asked as he skidded to a stop.
"You remember Mirror Mistress?" Kara asked. "Iris West. She killed her alternate on Sister Earth before that Earth was destroyed by that Crisis thing and then we captured her here while she was trying to kill her father." Barry gave a nod at this.
"I thought she was in jail," Barry remarked – he remembered Sister Earth's Rae putting the meta cuffs on Iris. He had paid the dinner bet to her before she went back to her revived Earth.
"Nope, with the confusion of Crisis and people being displaced she escaped. We think she was hiding out in the mirror world, but she has shown up again – in the multiverse. Found on two distance unknown worlds she visited there and killed her alternate," Kara said.
"We confirmed it's our Iris," Rae added. "She's going around the multiverse killing her own alternates."
"That seems tiring," Barry commented. "Any idea where she is?"
"Running trace right now and… she went to FrostAllen," Kara said as the world popped up on the computer with the name. "We should head right to our alternates. Makes this faster."
"Come on, Barry. Mirror Mistress as we know is not an easy one to defeat," Rae said, and Barry gave a resigned nod. All of them, plus Samuel, might seem like overkill but it was definitely needed for this one. Rae took a device from her person and opening a portal as Kara and Samuel went to get her bike.
-Bounty-
On FrostAllen, Rae and Barry exited the portal in some type of park.
"Who's alternate is here?" Barry asked as another portal opened and Kara came out on her bike; Samuel flying into the air after her. The group noticed some looks at them but seemed the appearance of people in superhero outfits didn't bother the people of this world.
"Look," Kara said, pointing at a food truck and Rae noticed it said Rae's Specialty's on it.
"Interesting, but I always liked baking more," Rae said but gave a nod to the food truck. "I'll go get my alternate."
Rae gave the two a look and then ran off fast, so no one saw where she was going. She didn't want to expose her alternate. They'd had enough of that on their own world. She stopped leaning on the side of the food truck where the back door was open to let in some air.
"What's on the menu?" She asked, seeing her alternate and the alternate of Ray Palmer busy working, raising an eyebrow at Ray Palmer being there.
"Look online today we're serving wraps…" FrostAllen's Rae started but then paused as she saw herself standing there. FrostAllen Rae giving a smile now. "Multiverse?" Bounty Rae gave a nod. "Ray, honey, think you can handle the food truck?"
"Yep, I know your recipes," Ray said, giving FrostAllen Rae a quick kiss which Bounty Rae made a face at.
"Not with Ray?" FrostAllen Rae asked now, grabbing one of the wraps and jumping out of the truck, bringing her alternate behind the truck where a table was set up.
"He's my nanny," Bounty Rae said.
"Oh, well…" she didn't know what to say to this, so changed the conversation. "You've got to try this wrap. It's my most popular when I do wraps. Chicken and bacon with lettuce and tomato and my own special sauce. I also make a vegetarian version of this with eggplant and carrots instead of chicken and bacon," FrostAllen Rae explained.
Bounty Rae took the wrap, taking a bite and had to admit it was good. "Love?" It was Kara and Barry, having seen the two Rae's go into the back and followed. "We're not here for food."
"Just waiting for you two," Bounty Rae said.
"Kay-Kay?" FrostAllen Rae asked.
"The name is Kara," Kara said back.
"Ah yeah, the others who came here said your name is usually Kara and not Kayla," FrostAllen Rae said. "And Barry. Considering you're all wearing superhero outfits I guess this is not a social visit." Barry had grabbed the wrap from his Rae to take a bite.
"We're here tracking a villain from our world who's come here," Kara explained. "She's going to try to kill her alternate unless we stop her. So, we need to get to your Iris West."
"Whoa, Iris West?" FrostAllen Rae said seeming shocked. "That's a blast from the past. I don't think I have heard that name for like 10 years. Maybe more. Not since Barry and Hunter told her to get lost when they were in High School."
"Why? What happened?" Barry asked as he finished the wrap.
"And who's Hunter?" Bounty Rae added.
"Hunter is Barry's brother – by adoption, not by blood I should mention, since apparently his alternate is a super villain on other Earths," FrostAllen Rae explained. "But as for what happened, Iris was a childhood friend of Barry and they started to date in High School. Well, Iris also kissed Hunter behind Barry's back and the brothers didn't take kindly to her trying to date them both. Kind of ironic considering their current arrangement."
"I'm not sure I want to ask," Kara said.
"Anyway, she disappeared from our lives after that," FrostAllen Rae said with a shrug. "But I can't picture her a villain."
"When ours got her powers, she was driven crazy," Bounty Rae explained. "Can you help us find her?"
"Sure! Hold on a second," FrostAllen Rae said, going back to the truck. "Sorry, honey, I got a super emergency." It seemed that using the term 'super' was their way of saying it was superhero related. "I'll be back before lunch rush." Ray gave a nod.
"You don't like her," Barry whispered to his Rae, seeing the face, but they didn't say more as FrostAllen Rae gave a nod to run off.
…
Using this world's Justice League system, FrostAllen Rae was able to find the apartment Iris rented down in Coast City and the three speedsters and Kara with Samuel rushed to it... only to find Iris dead over her breakfast.
"Damn… We were too late," Bounty Rae said.
"Not by much," Kara added, holding out a device. "A portal opened and close here recently."
"Can we trace it?" Barry asked.
"I can connect to our home system," Kara said, typing into a device. "And yes, a portal went from here to… Oh, New Justice."
"Can we go right to Iris's alternate?" Barry asked.
"Nope we can create portals to our alternates since they are ours but no other people than them. Need a Vibe for that. I'd love to create a portal to your alternate – she's leader of the Justice League there, after all," Kara said looking at her Rae, and Bounty Rae gave a smirk. "Me and Samuel will go to my bike and follow. Rae…" Kara turned to FrostAllen Rae.
"Go, fast, I'll call my dad and take care of this and get back to my Ray before the lunch rush," FrostAllen Rae said, waving them away and Bounty Rae opened a portal for her and Barry as Samuel took Kara to fly her back to the bike.
-Bounty-
On New Justice, Rae was in the back playing with her daughter, Leona. The just over one-year-old was running around on her feet and Rae was catching her. She barely blinked when a portal opened and an alternate of her and Barry came out. She did blink, however, when a second portal opened and a Kara on a motorcycle with an eagle came out.
"Bounty?" New Justice Rae said, remembering them. "That Dino freak is not coming back. Is he…?" She, of course, referred to Sherloque Wells and his dinosaur, Watsun from Dino Earth, who had been present the last time New Justice and Bounty crossed paths.
"I hope not," Kara said, taking off her helmet as Samuel complained about the red lights. She too did feel weaker in the dome, having a bit of Kryptonian powers that the lights took away. Kara opened her mouth to say more, but Leona had run right into her jumping up forcing Kara to catch her.
"Leona!" New Justice Rae said, but smiled as she grabbed her daughter.
"Who's the father?" Bounty Rae asked.
"Technically Kara. We used an artificial womb so we could both be the parents," Rae said, kissing her daughter.
"Explains why she thought I was your Kara. Where is your Kara anyway?" Bounty Kara asked.
"Overseeing the Sanctuary, as usual," Rae stated, nodding to the window and the Sanctuary beyond "So, who is your Bounty now?"
"Iris West," the three said together.
"I guess ours is not the only one who went crazy," New Justice Rae remarked.
"Didn't the other Rae say she couldn't see her as a villain?" Barry mumbled. "What did your Iris do?" He added more loudly.
"Tried to bring back the Reverse Flash to kill the Justice League. Over a year ago now. Courts decided she wasn't mentally stable and confined her to a psych ward," New Justice Rae explained simply.
"Where?" The three said together.
"Why? Aren't we looking for yours?" New Justice Rae asked.
"We skipped a critical piece of information," Bounty Rae said, realizing they forgot to tell New Justice Rae the important part. "Our Iris is a meta called Mirror Mistress and she's trying to kill her alternates."
"Oh, we have guests," it was Chris coming into the house before Rae could respond. "What…?" He didn't finish his sentence as Rae put Leona in his arms.
"Bring her to Kara or watch her yourself. I've got to run," New Justice Rae said, summoning her Speed Force outfit and opening a zap tunnel for them to Central-National City.
….
New Justice Rae brought them to the psych ward, a place just outside Gotham; Kara leaving her bike outside and Samuel flew around the building, glad to have his powers back, and gave a call.
"He sees something," Kara said. "Samuel go…"
"Let's not break any of the bars," New Justice Rae, said wanting her Iris safe, but not wanting to create a hole through with mentally unstable and possibly dangerous people could escape from. "We can phase into the hospital."
"Good idea," Kara said, agreeing with New Justice Rae. "Love?" Bounty Rae grabbed her wife, and the three speedsters ran into the ward without anyone seeing them and then into Iris West's room.
Iris West had been hung by her bedsheet, with wounds across her body. A blue portal was open, but was closing fast as Barry held a device to it.
"Is she trying to make this look like a suicide…? Because the stab wounds definitely show murder," Barry asked.
"Um… let's get out of here," New Justice Rae said at this, and the speedsters ran back to the bike where Samuel was sitting. "What now?"
"I got where she went," Barry said holding up the device in his hand and Kara took it.
"She went to SuperEarth!" Kara said opening up a portal with her bike. "Let's get our asses there. We're getting closer." With that, the group from Bounty left and New Justice Rae blinked as the portal closed behind them.
"And I thought I was fast," New Justice Rae remarked, figuring she'd head back home now and wait for the call from Joe to say Iris had been killed. She didn't want to be the one to break it to him.
-Bounty-
The group came out of the portal outside the familiar STAR Labs.
"Hold it!" It was Alex Danvers coming up, gun somewhat raised and looking over the group. She was followed by her own Barry, already in his Flash outfit. "Are you on the multiverse system?"
"We're Bounty," Rae said back.
"Cisco?" Alex said, clearly having an earpiece and probably getting information about their Earth from Cisco. "An Earth where the multiverse is well known, and villains jump to the multiverse to hide. So, you're bounty hunters?"
"Yes, and we need to get to your Iris West now. Our Iris West is going through the multiverse killing her alternates," Kara implored.
"Why?" SuperEarth's Barry asked, surprised by this.
"Our Iris West is crazy," all three said again.
SuperEarth's Barry took out his cellphone. "It's been a while since I spoke to her," Barry remarked, but before anyone could say anything, he spoke into the cell. "Hey Iris, you need…" SuperEarth Barry stopped. "She's being attacked! Someone, trace the signal... She stopped talking."
"Barry, we don't…" Alex stated, raising an eyebrow at his remark to have the call traced.
"Samuel, go," Kara said and the eagle flew off as Kara started her motorcycle and started to follow.
"Is that bird Kryptonian?" Alex asked at this.
"Yep, but we've got to go," Rae stated.
"Follow me," SuperEarth Barry said to the two now, and they followed him. Rae going next to Kara and transferring some speed into the motorcycle so it would go faster with them – giving her wife a wink at this. Most people would fall off at the speed, but Kara was steady.
They tracked Samuel to a park where the eagle was using his wings to summon wind to stop glass from hitting into people standing by who were smartly running away. SuperEarth's Barry went running to his Iris, who was laying on the floor, bleeding. Rae and Bounty Barry went running, grabbing flying pieces of glass as they ran at their own Iris, or Mirror Mistress, who was directing the attack at them now.
Kara took an arrow out and started aiming it as Bounty's Iris opened a portal. Iris went into the portal as Kara released the arrow and the portal disappeared before the arrow hit into it. The arrow hitting into a tree as the portal disappeared.
"Damn," Bounty Barry said, shaking his hand which was bleeding a bit from all the glass. Rae grabbed the arrow out of the tree and gave it back to her wife. She turned to SuperEarth's Barry. "How's your Iris…?"
"Dead," SuperEarth's Barry said. His hand was covered in blood. "She was gone before we got here." SuperEarth's Barry taking her still-on cellphone and ending the call and then closing her eyes.
"You said you hadn't spoken to her in a while…?" Bounty Barry asked.
"We drifted apart," SuperEarth's Barry said sadly. "But I'm still good friends with her brother. I'm God Father to his and Jesse's kids."
"I'm sorry," was all Bounty Barry could say.
"Did you get where she went?" Rae asked Kara.
"Yeah, she went to Mutant Earth," Kara said, nodding her head.
"Hey, I'm so sorry Barry. We'll get her," Rae said to SuperEarth's Barry, putting a hand on his shoulder as Kara opened another portal for them. Samuel flew in first and then the two speedsters next. Kara and her bike were last through.
SuperEarth Barry picked up the recently deceased Iris, then ran her back to STAR Labs – he didn't want Joe or Wally to see this before he told them.
-Bounty-
On Mutant Earth, the Bounty group came out in the farm, Samuel flying and perching on the house as Kara's bike kicked up some dirt as it stopped. The two speedsters looked around as a young preteen boy came running, clearly angry.
"Take me home!" He was yelling and started punching at Kara.
"Hey! Hey!" Kara called, grabbing the boy and took him in a hold as he was having a tantrum, or so it appeared.
"Jason!" It was this world's Kara Kent who came running up. "They are very obviously not your Kara and Barry!" Mutant Kara came and Bounty Kara released the boy, letting Mutant Kara take him. "I have been telling your Kara that you have actually been good. Now I have to report you randomly started punching at multiverse visitors. And you're here for punching your mother and nearly killing her, too!" The three from Bounty gave each other looks at that. "Go back into the fields. Now!"
Jason mumbled darkly at this, but stalked off nonetheless.
"Sorry, Karry Universe's Jason Kent. He's… well you heard all that. Karry sent him here for punishment," Mutant Kara explained as Mutant's Barry exited the house. He had four little children with him – three walking on their own and going to play with toys while he was carrying the fourth, a baby. "Where…?"
"Let's do this fast," Bounty Kara said. "Look, we're from Bounty Earth. We're trackers, what you probably calling bounty hunters, and we're here looking for our Iris West, who is a crazy super villain called Mirror Mistress. She has decided to start killing all her alternates, for reasons we've yet to understand, so we need to get to your Iris West now. Where is she?"
"Keystone," Mutant Barry said right away, taking out a cellphone. "And she's not answering. Jesse's overseas and we're actually closer..."
"Go, Stalker, I got the kids," Mutant Kara smirked, taking the little baby as the three speedsters now ran; Samuel sat on Kara's bike to take it with him as they followed.
The three speedsters ran through the streets of Keystone City as Mutant Barry led them to an office which he knew Iris worked at. Iris was there.
"Flash, what…?" Iris started, not calling him by his actual name given she shared this office with others. She then paused as the two other speedsters came in behind her – Samuel having taken Kara in through a window a moment later with Kara leaving her bike on the street.
"Iris West, you're in danger, come with me," Mutant Barry said, holding out his hand to her. Before Iris could take it shards of glass hit into her hand, forcing Mutant Barry back. Another Iris West came up from behind Mutant Iris, forming from the window itself, her arm a glass sword which put it through Mutant Iris' abdomen. "NO!" Mutant Barry shouted, rushing to his Iris and pushing his hand over the wound.
Rae and Bounty Barry started fighting their Iris, who was using mirrors, glass and any reflective surface around the room to dodge their and Samuel's attacks. Kara kept an arrow in her bow, ready to attack if she got a clear shot. "Sorry Super Blue Arrow and Flashes, but I've got work to continue," Bounty Iris said moments later, opening a portal and jumping through. Kara sent an arrow through again, that went into the portal this time before it closed.
"I need help!" Mutant Barry said before the Bounty trio could say anything. Iris's co-workers had run off now, so it was only them in the room. "I need someone to run with me to the hospital to keep pressure on the wound."
"I'm sorry… but she lost way too much blood for that," Bounty Barry said sympathetically, coming over and putting his CIS mind to the test. He had déjà vu with SuperEarth Iris's death just minutes ago. "We need to stop the bleeding before moving her. Maybe Samuel could use heat vision or freeze breath to stop it?"
"Samuel's freeze breath and heat vision isn't as accurate as human or dog or cat Kryptonians," Kara said. "Could do more damage than good. And before you say anything, I lost basically all my Kryptonian powers. I only have a bit of strength left. No heat vision or freeze breath."
"Use the Speed Force," Rae said. "Transfer Speed Force energy into her. If her body can handle it, then we might heal the wound – or at least close it enough that she can be moved to the hospital. You're going to have to do this though as it's your world."
Mutant Barry summoned Speed Force energy at this, the energy coming into his hand and towards Iris, but it didn't go into Iris. "What? What's wrong…?" Mutant Barry asked.
"Her body is not taking the energy," Rae said, knowing what she was seeing.
"B-Barry?" Iris mumbled, she had momentarily regained consciousness at contact with the Speed Force energy, even if it didn't go into her. "I… l… l love you," Iris' voice grew weaker as she talked, and she tried to raise her hand to his cheek, but it fell back halfway up to Barry's face. "I wasn't that girl…" she muttered as she slumped in his arms, stopping breathing.
"Iris! No, you're my sister…" Mutant Barry said, tears coming to his eyes now.
"I'm sorry," Bounty Barry said, putting an arm around his alternate. If something happened to Rae, his sister, he would be just as devastated – and just as pissed off.
"I got an arrow into the portal. It should have hit her as she exited. She'll have to go into the mirror world to heal, but you know that mirror world heals her fast. We bought some time for the next world, but we must go now," Kara said, a little hushed to her Rae.
"Go, catch her. Make her pay," Mutant Barry said, looking over to three from Bounty, anger in his eyes. "I'll get her safely to the morgue and tell Joe what happened," the Bounty group nodded as Mutant Barry picked up Iris's body and ran out.
"Where do we go now…?" Bounty Barry asked once his alternate was gone, trying to ignore the damage to the office and the blood on the floor.
"A very familiar and popular world," Kara said. "Karry Universe."
