Moscow was cold, even though it was July.
Vampires aren't too affected by harsh temperatures, but that didn't mean we couldn't feel it. Caroline couldn't help but smile, and this city was so beautiful. The sights and the sounds almost overwhelmed her senses, but she found it calming and peaceful. There had been something familiar about the city that Caroline couldn't place.
"Thank you so much, and we will see you tomorrow then!"
She was turning to look at her companion. Bonnie Bennet. Her best friend since they were kids, who happened to be a mighty witch. She had this glow about her in her excitement, if you couldn't tell from the smile that graced her lips and the way her emerald eyes lit up.
"Good news?" she asked.
Nodding her head, Bonnie spoke, "Yes, Miranda got us a meeting with her grandmother, and it's gonna be tomorrow around 9."
"So soon?" she couldn't believe it. "I would have thought it take a couple of days while they thought about it. Like all the others." Caroline said
Agreeing, Bonnie continued, "Right? but Miranda said the family will be busy for the next couple of weeks, and her grandmother is interested in your story." Caroline could tell that Bonnie was excited by this news. Since starting their journey, they had used 'code words for certain things. Having a conversation about covens and witches might get the wrong impression. They wanted to stay under the radar as much as possible.
"That's better than being told to piss off like the last one in England," Caroline stated dryly.
"They were rather rude." Bonnie sighed. "look, Care, if this turns out like all the others, I promised it would be the last one." taking her hand in mine. "And I mean it. No matter what they say. I promise."
"You are the best, Bonnie Bennet," she said with a smile.
"I know!"
And Caroline knew Bonnie meant it. 'Another coven.' Caroline thought. No matter what the witches said, this would be the last.
"Whos the best?"
Liz Forbes pulled up the chair next to Caroline, setting down her phone and a cup of hot coffee.
"Bonnie got us the meeting, it's tomorrow."
Her mother looked surprised, "Quicker than the snobbish ones." she replied. Both girls looked at each and grinned. "Well, we have two weeks left before we have to head back home, and don't you complain," she warned before Bonnie or herself could do so "Both Shela and I agreed that the three of us would travel for the summer and be back before school started up again."
"That's something I'm not looking forward to," Bonnie said with a heavy sigh.
Caroline was torn, wanting to both go bake home and not. Only her mom, bonnie, and bonnies gram Shela knew what she was. They didn't want to involve anyone else. Not even Elana knew who was another one of her and Bonnies best friends. Her mom and Shela said it would be best. Considering that their little town of Mystic Falls was once home to vampires, there was a council that consisted of the founding family that knew all about vampires. Her mom was a part of the council since she was the town's sheriff and married into a founding family.
They had spent their summer break searching for clues, tracking down coven after coven, with barely any leads. It was all to find any answers to her condition. It sounded like she was sick, but that wasn't it. Caroline had turned into a hybrid about three and half months ago. That's why they were traveling, looking for any coven that could clue them into why this happened. It shouldn't have since Caroline was already a vampire.
She remembered that night of the car crash. Caroline was badly injured, and it wasn't looking like she would make it. But somehow, she had made a full recovery. Her mom found out later that one of the doctors had used vampire blood to heal her patients. Caroline could only remember someone coming into her hospital room late in the evening and smothering her with a pillow.
Caroline Forbes dies at 17, smothered by a pillow. A great way to die, she thought sadly. She didn't get a good look at the person, but she knew the person was male and tall. Other than that, she had no clue. When she woke, she had this urgeo of being extremely thirsty. She had somehow gotten a hold of another patient's blood bag.
A blood bag.
And that's how she turned. She was alone in her room without knowing what was happening to her. 'Could have been worse ways to turn.'
Caroline was so lost in thought that when she felt her mother's hand reach over and grabs hers, she nearly jumped out of her chair.
"Sorry, mom. I was lost in thought." giving a weak smile.
"It's alright, sweety. I know that this is rough for you, but I know we will get through this. You are strong. And no matter what happens tomorrow, we won't stop looking for answers. I promise."
It was growing tiresome for them. Bonnies grams had sent them a few leads and contacts up in Montreal when they had first started their trip, which led to a dead end.
In Dublin, Ireland, there was a small coven that would only be told to another witch and called caroline an abomination. That was always fun to hear. While in Scotland, they had come across a pack of wolves that limited Caroline's time with the pack. Their Alpha was a woman named Leni who told them the werewolf gene was passed down through either parental side; Liz didn't know anything about it, which led her to ask her sister, who loved genealogy, some questions. It was a start.
'Can I ask you something?' Caroline said nervously. Leni looked over at the young hybrid waiting patiently. She tried a few times to start but was unsure how to ask this.
Taking pity on the girl, Leni spoke. "What do you remember before the change? The events that led up to it?"
"I remember being in the hospital," she started, recalling the night. "I drank a blood bag. I mean, Eww. A blood bag? Seriously? Wonder if anyone else turned by drinking out of a blood bag." Caroline couldn't help but laugh. "I guess there are worse ways to turn."
Leni smiled, "That's how you became a vampire. I'm talking about what led to you trigging your wolf side."
Thinking back, "there was this end of year carnival, I was head of the comity for it." stating proudly, "Even before the car accident, I was getting things ready. I knew Bonnie and Elena would do a good job, but It wouldn't be perfect." Caroline knew she was rambling, but Leni just sat there and listened. "I left the hospital once it was dark and went. There were so many sounds and sights I felt overwhelmed. I had to get away from it, that's when." she broke off. Her eyes widened in shock. "There was this carnival worker, he was bleeding. And" her hand went over her mouth, tears ran down her cheeks. "I couldn't help it. I could smell the blood. Oh god, it smelled so good. I killed him." Looking back at Leni, caroline didn't see pity or hatred in the older wolf's eyes, only the true and understanding. The same eyes that had been through it. "You take a life. That's how you trigger it."
"Yes, that is the curse of a werewolf."
"That's horrible."
"It is nature. It is who we are." Leni explained. They sat in comfortable silence for a while before Caroline spoke up.
"Do you think ill ever find a pack?" Would they even take her, she wondered.
"Wolves will fear and hate what you are. You must understand that vampires and wolves are natural enemies. We can sense when one is near, smell the death upon them. You may never find a wolf pack Caroline." that hurt. She knew a part of her longed for something she could never have. It hurt. Leni must have seen the sadness that crossed her face.
"But I believe that you will forge your own path, build a pack of your making. You already have your mother and your witch friend. Surround yourself with people you can trust and who will accept who and what you are. It won't be easy."
"When is it ever" she replied.
"True. Let me give you some advice before we part. There will be those that will hate and fear you. There might be those that will even try and hunt and kill you. Yes, it is a possibility. It is a harsh reality of our world. Guard yourself and those you are for. Trust your instincts. And most importantly, you must find a balance between the wolf and vampire in you. Don't be one or the other, or you'll lose yourself.
Another lead had them in England with the leads of an old group of witches in London who rudely told them to 'piss off before they even got to introduce themselves. they decided to go to Paris for some fun, relaxation, shopping, and good old fashion sightseeing. While doing all the tourist stuff, they had run into Miranda. A fair skins woman in her mid 20's. It happened like most encounters with a witch, their natural ability to sense other supernatural creatures. The shock on the woman's face gave Caroline and Bonnie a pause and her mother a protective stance. But Meredith held out her hand and introduced herself. They talked for hours in a small cafe near the Eiffel Tower. Miranda said that her coven leader was her grandmother, and if they were interested, she'd make a call and explain Caroline's situation. And that's how they found themselves in Moscow now.
"I'll have to reply to her once we get back to the hotel." her mother's voice brought Caroline out of her thoughts.
"Who?" she asked.
Her mother looked, knowing she hadn't paid much attention. Caroline gave a sheepish grin.
"Yes, your aunt Cinthia emailed me with some updates on our family history. It looks like one of our great-great-great grandmothers or something like that, had a second child with another man after her first husband died."
"And that could be a missing clue?" Family history had never interested Caroline before, but now anything that could lead to answers was welcomed.
"It's something," Liz replied, taking a sip of her coffee. "I also got a few emails from work that ill need to take care of."
"Mom, we said no town business until we got back." she knew her mother was a workaholic, and if she started cases now, it would ruin the rest of the trip.
"It's nothing like that, Caroline. Depute Andrew emailed saying there was an animal attack a couple of miles outside town. He wanted to update me on what they found."
"An animal attack, as in?" Bonnie asked. Liz had told them beforehand about using code words when not in the hotel. An animal attack meant it was a vampire.
"Yes." That was all Liz said. They sat in silence, enjoying the view, each in their own thoughts.
Unaware of the man sitting a few tables away who was very intently listening but typing on his phone with a devilish grin.
