AN: Alright everyone. Here's the rewrite. For those who read the preview, just skip this since I practically used it as said preview and wait for the next chapter which won't take too long to get out since I already have it written. I'm just writing a few chapters ahead since I will be going towards a new chapter of life and want to get as much of it written as possible. Of course I'll still post stories and all but as my job nears, I won't have much access to a computer if at all, so updates will be slow and I'm gonna try to give yall enough to read and enjoy. Either way, hope you enjoy reading.

*Miranda's POV*
I grew up in a small town in the kingdom of Freezenburg. I had two really good friends but I knew that if I had the chance to leave, I would. I wanted to see the world and at the age of 19, I got that chance. I had met a man by the name of Balthazar Birmingham. He was the right hand to the captain of the Enchancian ship that comes in every now and then to trade. He was sweet and handsome so when he offered to show me around the ship, I agreed. After I got the hang of how things were run on a ship, I was offered a spot on the team. We sailed the seventeen seas trading goods to the allies of Enchancia. While sailing the seas, Balthazar and I got engaged and settled down in his home town of Dunwiddie. Three months later we got married and nine months later, I was expecting our first born child. It was during my pregnancy that I finally could see the flaws in Balthazar's character. He was antsy and during the first two trimesters of my pregnancy, he was off on the water sailing to kingdoms that were only a few days away by ship. He stayed when I got closer to the due date. He was actually home when the baby surprised us both and I went into labor.
It was excruciating, but I managed to push the child out. He was home when we were told that I shouldn't have any more children with how difficult it was. It wouldn't be safe for me or the baby. It was also the first time I realized how much of a douche he really was.
"Miranda, have you decided on a name for the babe?" the housewife asked.
I looked down at my baby girl who was so small, so tiny, but strong. She yawned cutely and stretched her little arms. To my surprise, she opened her eyes and looked right at me. I was already in love with my baby girl, but I fell even deeper in love at the beautiful blue eyes she had. Her eyes held a shine and I knew what I was going to name her.
"Her name will be Sofia. Sofia Saoirse Birmingham." I said.
My little wisdom. Balthazar grew cold and distant to a point where he was away longer than he was home. Before Sofia was even a month old, I found Balthazar's side of the small house we had empty. He left with no word, only a note and divorce papers. I held onto my baby girl as I read his note. A note that said that he couldn't be tied down any longer and that he was giving up his parental rights to Sofia so he wasn't responsible for her.
After that I did my best to care for her. I grew up learning how to sew, and decided to go to the local cobbler shop and see if I could get a part time job there. The cobbler was an older fellow and he accepted. Under his watch, I learned how to make shoes. Sofia learned how to walk at only eight months old, said her first word at ten months old, and was reading books by the time she was one.
She was at the age where she was fascinated by everything and it was clear that she was smart. So I taught her how to sew, cook, and more. She was also fascinated by animals and her favorite were the wolves. She was only three years old and she already knew what most six or seven year olds did. She was three years old when the old man who ran the cobbler shop passed and had left the shop to me. It was hard to keep up with the bills and I had to take more odd jobs just to keep up with them. I hid the bills from Sofia and told her that we had to cut down on the things we wanted. She didn't complain one bit and complied.
Oddly enough, Sofia never complained. I've only had to tell her once and she listens. She was five years old and ready to start some basic schooling. I was walking home from one of my odd jobs as a carpenter and I wanted to stop by the tailor's shop to see if I could find a new dress for Sofia. It was too expensive though and I went home. I walked the rest of the way and I was greeted by the most delicious smell and found Sofia standing by the fire and a pot of stew. She ladled me a bowl and grinned a toothy grin at me.
"Welcome home mamma." she said.
"Sofia, where did you get all the stuff to make this?" I asked as I knew we were short on money.
She cocked her head a little, "I made it mama. Do you like it?"
I smiled, "I do sweetie. What did you make it with?"
"Rabbit." she said.
I winced as I knew how much of a dent the meat alone would have made in the money we had.
I sighed, "Sweetie, this is really nice. But we can't waste money."
She looked a little confused.
"Sweetheart, we can't afford nice meats like rabbit. Especially enough for a stew like this." I said.
"I know that mom." she said.
"What do you mean by that, Sofia?" I asked.
She looked down and shuffled her feet.
"It was a year ago and I knew how hard you worked. I wanted to do something nice for you and I looked around to see what I could do. I stumbled across a loose floorboard and I looked inside. I found the bills and the savings. I decided that I wanted to help you and you taught me how to sew. I went to the butcher to see if I could learn from him. At first he was mad at me, but I asked him if I could learn from him. I told him that if I mended his clothes, he would teach me. So he did and taught me how to hunt. He was different when we were in the woods, kinder. He said that I was the fastest learner he has ever seen and had let me go on a small hunt of my own. I liked learning and so once he deemed me experienced enough, he patted my head and told me he was proud of how far I came. So I went to the carpenter and blacksmith to learn how to make things out of wood and metal. I even got a small job taking care of the horses at the ranch. With how much I know, I began experimenting on what I could do and I made something good. I found a better way of storing meat and started selling it. Gerome tried it and started selling it in his shop. He gives me half of what he makes off of the sales because I was the one to come up with the idea. At the ranch I'm still too young to do things unsupervised but I take care of the horses. I make sure that they are fed correctly and have the proper amount of exercise. The ranch owner said that if I'm good with the horses, she'd let me ride a horse on my own. She's taught me how to ride a horse on my break times."
I smiled at her, "I'm so proud of you, my baby girl. I wish that you never saw those bills, but as long as you are happy with what you are doing, I won't say anything and that you aren't dropping school to work."
She gave me a sheepish look and pulled out a piece of paper. A paper that I had to do a double take upon seeing. My baby girl, who is only 5 years old, is standing with a graduate paper.
"My teacher wanted me to test and see what I know because I found everything to be too easy. I gained enough credit to graduate school." Sofia said.
I picked her up and twirled her around. I spent the rest of the night enjoying the stew she made and just spending time with her. I am proud to call her my daughter. With her helping around the house now, I was actually able to lay off a few things and focus on the jobs I wanted to do. We actually earned enough money to buy and pay off a carriage to go throughout the kingdom and beyond selling shoes and stuff. I took Sofia with me this time because I wanted her to see the world. While in Auroria, I was worried because of the rumors we heard about a dark fairy. I apparently had nothing to worry about because the night Sofia and I were to leave, Sofia introduced me to said fairy, Maleficent was her name. I sat and listened to her story and that the king was only the king because he had taken her wings. In retaliation, she had cursed his first born baby girl. The king had sent the baby away because he was afraid and burnt all the spindles in the kingdom. Maleficent ended up raising the baby she cursed as a Fairy Godmother. Throughout her story, I could tell it was painful and I wanted to comfort her but she didn't seem like one that was a hugger. Sofia, who wasn't too cuddly anymore, climbed into Maleficent's lap and wrapped her arms around the fairy in a hug.
Sofia and I left that day with a skip in our step because Maleficent SMILED at Sofia. Sofia had actually gotten a scale and feather from Maleficent as a token because Sofia helped her. And on the way home, in the kingdom of Rudistan where Sofia made friends with a little witch. I had finished up a job and noticed that Sofia was playing with a little girl.
"Lucinda." a woman who I assumed was the other girl's mother called.
I smiled as Sofia and the other girl gave each other a token. Sofia had given Lucinda a hair pin and Lucinda gave her a blue feather. I smiled as Sofia wove the feather into her hair just like she did with Maleficent's.
We made it home to Enchancia and Sofia was dancing around. Sofia really took off when she turned seven. She had always been athletic and had a lean build to her. I let her wear a tunic and pants because of how active she is. Due to her being the one who brings home the meats and fixing up the shop, she gained as much muscle a seven year old could have. I was grateful that she knew how to hunt because she ate more than a typical seven year old did. She also came home with a gigantic grin on her face. She told me that she had met one of the acrobats from the circus and she's been practicing her flips and tricks. She's done so well and I am proud of her. I was walking home one day and it was oddly quiet in the town. I looked around to see if I could find someone, but no one was to be found. Then I heard something and turned to see a huge crowd around the racetrack. I headed over there to see what was going on.
"Excuse me, what's going on?" I asked one of the people around.
"Some kid managed to tame Blackjack. She's competing with him." one man said.
I managed to get to the front of the crowd, only to find Sofia sitting on the biggest stallion I have ever seen. He was absolutely beautiful and it was obvious as to how he got his name. He was all black except for the white diamond on his chest that led into a white stripe down his belly. He also looked as if he had diamonds on his legs. I found out just what this race was, it's the Terrell Circuit. I watched as she won the race. She had the biggest grin on her face as Blackjack reared and they celebrated.
"Congratulations baby girl. I'm so proud of you." I said as I made my way to the winner's circle.
"Mom! You saw it?" she said as her grin got bigger.
"I did. You did so good." I said.
She gave me a toothy grin and she introduced me to Blackjack who whinnied at me as if to say hi. She was quite good at what she did and I loved it. We had enough to splurge on a good piece of meat, like deer, so we headed over to the butcher shop.
"Ah hello runt." Gerome said.
"Hi Grandpa." Sofia said.
"I suppose you want somethin' don't cha."
"Yep. We're looking for a good piece of meat since I won the Terrell Circuit."
"So that was you runt. Who'd ya win on?"
"Blackjack."
"You managed to do it. Good job runt. Say, I'll give it to ya for free. You've helped my store out quite a bit these past few years. You've earned it."
"Thanks gramps."
Gerome grabbed her a big pound of meat, "Here ya go runt. Off you go now. I would like to have a word with your mamma here."
"Okay gramps."
Sofia walked out of the store with the meat in hand. I turned to Gerome.
"Sir, I can pay for it." I said as I didn't want him to give out that much for no profit.
"Miranda dear, no need to pay. She's a great kid. You've raised her well and she's going to be a fine lady someday." Gerome said.
"If you don't mind, tell me how you met her." I asked.
"Well, I'll admit that I wasn't the nicest person. My own kid wanted nothing to do with the shop and my wife had left for some other kingdom. So when the little lass came by to see if she could work for food, I let her. She was a wee little thing, about three feet tall, and she asked if she could fix up my clothes in exchange for meats. I did one better since she seemed to be a quick learner and she was always standing in the corner watching me work. I began teaching her what I wanted to teach my own son. She's quick as a whip, picked up a lot in the short time I taught her. So I wanted to see how she did hunting. She did wonderful and had caught a rabbit before I even saw it. She also shot down two quail before going to rummage around for the eggs. Quite a sharp eye on her. She turned around with a big toothy grin and I patted her on the head. She's smart and came up with one of my best selling products. She started calling me Grandpa so I made the time to play with her. Managed to draw out the kid in her and found that she's a real sweetheart." Gerome said.
"Thank you for everything." I said.
"You're welcome." he said.
"Did you steal that? How'd you get it?" a new voice said.
"I earned it." that was Sofia.
"Well it's mine now ya runt. Fork it over." a kid said.
"No."
"Fine then."
I heard flesh hit flesh and I looked at Gerome who had grabbed a cleaver. I looked to see Sofia on the ground while the boys were standing over her with the meat in their hands.
"That is MINE!" Sofia yelled as she tackled the nearest boy to her.
Funny thing is, she was the same height as the kid. I went to grab her but then the boys got really mean.
"There's no daddy to protect you, ya know. I bet yur mamma slept with the teacher to get you out of school." the boy said.
I winced as I saw the rage in Sofia's eyes. Sofia punched the kid right in the mouth, stunning him.
"Say what you want about me, but NEVER insult my mother again. She's the best mother I know." she said.
The other boys decided to jump her but before they could, Gerome grabbed them.
"Ah no ya don't ya damn bullies. Pickin on a kid." Gerome said.
Gerome then looked down to Sofia, "You alright lass?"
Sofia nodded.
"Hey, it's okay. I'll give you another one okay? The rest can go to the animals." Gerome said.
Sofia nodded again.
"Sofia." I said.
She looked startled to see me. She hugged herself and turned around to pick up the meat that was dropped during the fight.
"M'sorry mom." she said.
"It's okay sweetie." I said gently as I reached out to comfort her.
She pulled away and ran off. I was about to go after her when Gerome stopped me.
"Miranda, it's best if you let her cool down." he said.
"How would you know?" I asked.
"She's done this once before. She's really sweet but when aggravated, she can be really scrappy. Most kids her age, and occasionally the older ones, tease her and call her names. She's never answered them except when they start making fun of you. I've grabbed her the one time off of a bigger kid who decided it would be funny to mock you for not having a husband and that you needed one to reign her in. That kid ended up in the hospital because Sofia slammed him into the ground. She's learned to ignore them now but at times when she doesn't want to be around people, she doesn't care." he said.
I sighed and carried the new pound of meat home with me. I decided to make Sofia some stew from it. When the stew was done, Sofia came in the door. I waited for her to begin as she ladled herself some food.
"I know it was wrong mom. I just. I don't like what the other kids say about you. They don't know you. They don't know how hard you work just to keep our house. They don't know about the other jobs you do to make ends meet." Sofia said.
I knelt in front of her and made her look at me.
"Sofia, it's sweet that you stand up for me. But, I want you to stay safe okay? I know that with what we do it isn't guaranteed but I want you to be as smart as possible. Use that brain I know you have. Show them that you aren't who they believe you are. Show them just who Sofia Roric really is." I said.
She smiled at me and we cuddled that night. After that, she was walking around town confidently and she was quite tall for her age. She's only seven and she's already almost five feet tall. Honestly I believe her height came from my side of the family along with how much she eats. My mother and grandmother believed that somewhere in our lineage, we were related to giants. A smaller version of giants but giants nonetheless.
I quite enjoyed having her around the shop because now we have a stable footing and regular customers coming in and out. I didn't need to travel much and that was nice. It was after a trip to the other side of Enchancia that I realized that Sofia had fixed up the shop to look nice. She had shown me a house that she built in the forest. It was quite cozy and the best part about it is that we didn't have to pay for the house Sofia built. We actually had enough customers to set up hours and on Sofia's eighth birthday, we closed the shop and spent it catching up on things. Even though we were together, I still didn't know much of what Sofia really does when she runs off.
She told me of the knights of Enchancia and her favorite knight, Sir Finnegan. She told me that a squire had gotten lost and she had helped him back to his camp. She spent the day with them and ever since they drop by when they could just to say hi to Sofia. It was amusing when Sir Finnegan had actually came to the shop and sat with us all day, just chatting with her.
Sofia was nearing her ninth birthday when everything changed. It was a particularly rough day of catching up on orders since there was a lack of materials. I had told Sofia to stay home today and help and she did. She was in the front working on the orders I gave her and I was working on my bunch. I was working on a specific order when I heard the distinct tinkle of the door opening. I sighed and went to put down the order I was working on when I heard Sofia's voice. I knew she had it handled so I went back to the order I was working on. Little did I know, the next order would change Sofia and I's entire lives forever.
AN: I need an opinion. Would you rather have Luna come in later as a puppy where Sofia finds her or that Sofia has a completely different animal companion that is NOT a rabbit. And by companion I mean one where she takes the animal with her everywhere but school, kinda like she did when she brought Clover over to Vivian's castle.
Any James fans will be a little disappointed cause he's gonna be a bit of a bully to start off. A bully that Sofia has absolutely no tolerance for and the only reason why she doesn't retaliate is because he's her stepbrother and the crown prince. Hugo too although he may get a slight redemption arc and I use that lightly because Season 1 Hugo is like perfect material.
Miranda may act like she doesn't really care what Sofia does as long as she's safe, but she does care. Miranda hopes that Sofia trusts her enough with whatever she's doing to tell her if it was potentially dangerous. Miranda also trusts in Sofia's abilities since Sofia has been self sufficient to a point where she was nearly running the shop while Miranda was away on short trips.
The canon ages of Sofia is 8 in season 1, 8-9 in S2, 9-10 in S3, and 10-11 in S4. When watching, S1 and S2 seem like they're connected, moreso than the other two. Season 1 and Season 2 all have events that appear to happen in the same year where Seasons 3 and 4 seem to take longer.
Blabbing is done, please comment as I'd like to know your thoughts. I have a better idea for the Amulet so stay tuned for that.
