Chapter 24: Her day has finally come
Early July, 2018
It was a little halfway through the year and Sara and Grissom never felt more busier, outside of their jobs that is, not only did they witness Nick become a father, but a month after that, their twins turned 1 year old and about two weeks after summer vacation started for Grissom, they, with their twins, went to Paris to watch Grissom's ex-students, Andre and Bella get married, who also announced they were expecting their first child together that should be due by the end of the year.
Now it was early July, and they were once again going to a wedding, only this time it was in Vegas.
They were in the hotel room that Catherine had set up for them, getting ready themselves after getting their twins ready, and as they were finishing up, Grissom was giving his wife that certain look, a look that always ended up getting them into 'trouble'.
Sara shook her head with a smile a moment later. "I know that look all too well, Dr. Grissom, but we don't have time for that."
Grissom looked over at the twins, who were in their double wide stroller ready to go, before walking towards his wife and whispering with passion and love in his eyes. "Can you really blame me?"
Honestly, she really couldn't, especially when she saw her man in a tux (like he was in now) or suit, which doesn't happen much these days, and currently her heart rate was speeding up a little more than normal, but she was trying to be strong so they wouldn't be late, so she shook her head again before cupping his cheek. "Believe me babe, no I don't blame you one bit, but we shouldn't be late because more than likely the focus would be on why we are late rather than what today means for Catherine, and I'm not about to steal her thunder."
He chuckled before asking. "You really think they'll care why we are late? They know we are married. It isn't like it was when we were hiding our relationship."
"Unfortunately, our relationship is still that interesting to other people. Why it's still that way, I don't know, I can't tell you. But in any case, why tempt it. You don't really want to upset Catherine on her wedding day, do you?"
He shook his head one more time with a smile, declaring defeat, for now. "No, I guess not." He then cleared his throat before whispering. "But maybe we can make arrangements for our little ones later."
She then smirked. "Then you'll really get the known looks from everyone."
He chuckled again as he wrapped his arms around his wife. "And at the moment I don't care. I just wish to have some alone time with my wife, if you don't mind."
She shook her head as she moved her arms so they were wrapped around his neck before she spoke softly. "I don't mind at all, and yes, I would love to spend some alone time with my husband as well."
They started to lean towards one another when there was a knock on the door, causing them to sigh before she spoke while unwrapping her arms from her husband. "That should be Nick and Sabrina."
While they showed up in Vegas on different days since Sara and Grissom needed to be there for the wedding rehearsal, they agreed to go to the wedding with Nick and Sabrina.
Grissom nodded while turning towards the door while Sara made sure they had everything they needed for themselves and the twins.
A few seconds later, Grissom greeted Nick and Sabrina, who had left Billy with her parents in San Diego so they could have a little alone time themselves, in the room.
A moment later Sara asked. "We all ready?"
After they all said yes, they headed out of the hotel room together.
About an hour later
Once the bridesmaids, which included Sara, Lindsey, Morgan and Sabrina, helped Catherine get ready, she needed a few moments alone.
But once those few moments passed, there was a knock on the door, so Catherine asked as she walked towards it. "Yeah, who is it?"
"It's me."
She opened the door a second later, seeing Grissom standing there in his tux, then she moved to the side to let him in before closing the door.
After it was clicked shut, she turned to look at him, which he still hadn't said a word, so she asked with a smirk. "What? Do I really look so hideous you can't say a word?"
He shook his head and cleared his throat before speaking in an awe tone. "On the contrary, you look very beautiful, Catherine. In fact, I don't think I ever seen you more beautiful."
"And you don't look bad yourself."
He smiled and nodded with a smile before asking. "You ready?"
She took a breath with a nod. "Yes, but can I tell you a secret?"
"Of course, you know you can tell me anything."
"I think I'm more nervous this time then I was the first time I got married."
He nodded in understanding. "Me too." Catherine wasn't shocked to hear what he had said but that he had said it in the first place, then he continued after taking a breath. "I just felt that this was my last chance to get it right."
Catherine took a moment then smirked again. "You know what, I honestly don't think you would ever run out of chances with her."
He sighed. "Yeah, maybe, but I don't want to make her feel like I need any more chances. I wanted this to be it for the both of us, you know?"
Even though she knew the answer to this next question, she still felt she had to ask, with a smile. "And how's it going this time around?"
She didn't think his eyes could light up even more than they already have been, but she just saw it happen as he answered her question. "Better than I could have ever expected, we are more solid than ever before."
Catherine nodded, her smile getting bigger as she placed her hand on his arm. "And I'm sure I said this before, but I am so happy for you and her, if there are two people who deserve a happy ending, it's you two."
Grissom smiled as he placed his hand on hers. "Thank you, Cath. But today isn't about me and her..."
She cuts him off with a chuckle as she removed her hand out from under his. "Isn't it every day though?"
He chuckled. "Maybe." Once they calmed down, he continued. "But in this moment and the next two hours or so, it's about you and Lou, and I truly wish the best for you guys, especially you, because I don't think I've seen you this happy in a long time. In fact, not since..."
Grissom trailed off, realizing where he was going with that, and not wanting to turn this moment into a sad one, but Catherine had to ask. "Not since, when?"
He took a breath and spoke softly. "When Warrick was alive." She took in a sharp breath, still feeling the pain of losing him after all these years, as she walked to an old team photo that was on her dresser and looked at it while Grissom watched her for a moment or two before asking, his curiosity getting the better of him. "You know there had been a lot of speculation about you two for years, which I didn't pay too much attention to it back then, but thinking about it now, is it true, were you and Warrick..."
She cuts him off as she turned to look at him. "Ever intimately involved?"
He gets a little shy look on his face, not about the question itself but that he really actually wanted to know.
But before she answered, she had a question of her own, one that's been in the back of her mind for years. "Were you and Sara intimate when you first met in San Francisco?"
Knowing it was only fair to tell her something so personal when he wanted to know something personal about her, he took a breath before speaking the whole truth. "I knew from the moment we met my life had changed, whether I wanted to fully acknowledge it right then and there was a whole other matter for me, as you might guess. And while I did feel there was intimacy between us from the beginning, it never went as far as people think or assume."
Catherine then smirked. "No, that just happened seven years later. And I got to say that took some patience I honestly didn't know she had."
They both had seen her impatient on a lot of things, especially when it came to waiting for the results for her cases, but for her to have the patience to wait on him for so long still felt like a miracle to both of them, even though they both knew why she did it.
Grissom sighed, thinking about that. "Part of me still can't believe she waited for me." He then looked at his wedding ring, thinking of their past after they got married the first time. "Still waited for me after everything that happened."
Catherine, trying not to get too emotional so she didn't have to redo her makeup, spoke softly. "It's because like you, that first day changed her life. She saw what she wanted and could never give it up, no matter what or how long it took, you became her hope, her dream, her fantasy."
He took a breath as he played with his ring. "And I'm thankful she felt I lived up to her fantasy."
She nodded as she turned to look at the picture again, her eyes on Warrick as she responded softly/sadly. "Some people aren't that lucky to get their fantasy." She took a breath before looking at Grissom again. "No, we were never intimately involved, but at one time he was my..."
Grissom cuts her off in an understanding tone. "Hope, your dream, your fantasy." She nodded as she looked down, then a moment later she feels Grissom's arms wrap around her and heard his comforting whisper in her ear. "I'm so sorry Catherine."
She took a breath. "For a while there I kept thinking that if I would have had said something to him sooner then maybe things could have been different, that maybe he might not have..."
She trailed off, and he finishes it off for her. "Died. I know, at times I thought that maybe if I had helped him somehow, someway that he might still be alive, but you know thinking of all those what ifs will only drive you crazy."
She nodded as she pulled back. "That's why I try and not to live in the past." He nodded, remembering her saying that years ago, before she continued. "And while I still try and live by that, I know a part of me will always hold on to him, I can't help it, which Lou understands that."
He nodded with another smile before asking. "Which speaking of Lou, you really ready to spend the rest of your life with him?"
She nodded, her smile and eyes are getting bright with happiness once again. "I am, I'm not scared anymore."
Grissom looked at his watch before looking at Catherine again with a smirk. "Good, because I think the groom could be getting antsy by now."
She chuckled as she moved to the mirror to check her appearance one more time, then once she was satisfied, she walked towards Grissom, who already had his arm out to her, so she slips hers through his and they started walking towards the door.
But before they walked out into the hall, she turns to him. "Thank you for agreeing to walk me down the aisle."
"Thank you for asking, I was honored."
Not long after the Bride and Groom were declared husband and wife, they all sat around at the folding tables that was set up in the backyard of their two story, four-bedroom house and was eating, drinking and talking, then came and went the first dance for the husband and wife.
When it was time for the other guests, Sara and Grissom were among the first on the makeshift dance floor, their arms were wrapped around one another as they moved their feet in silence for a few minutes, then after looking at the newlyweds, who were dancing again, Sara looks at her husband with a smile. "I haven't seen her this happy in a long time."
"Me neither and we were just talking about that in her room earlier."
That perked Sara's interest. "Oh really, so what else did you two talk about?"
He smiled as he brings her closer. "You, us." Then gets a little somber as he finished. "And Warrick."
She got a somber look herself when he had mentioned Warrick, but then she smirked as she asked. "You, of all people told her about us?"
He gave her a small shrug, like it was no big deal, but they both knew it was a huge deal that he would open up like that, then replied. "Well, I felt it was only fair that I told her something personal when I wanted to hear something personal from her."
Once again she was shocked, her husband actually asked for some personal information about someone else that wasn't CSI related, but before she asked about what he had asked her, she replied with another smirk. "And let me guess, she wanted the true nature of our relationship in San Francisco?"
He chuckled with a nod. "You know her so well."
"I believe it is also the last 'mystery' of our relationship to her." He nodded before she asked. "So, what did you tell her?"
"The truth. While I knew my life had changed the moment we had met, and I did feel an intimacy between us, nothing physical ever happened in San Francisco."
She moved one of her hands to cup his cheek, seeing the sadness in his eyes for once again delaying them from the start, before speaking softly with love in her eyes. "And I don't regret it."
He raised an eyebrow at her statement. "You sure about..."
She cuts him off with a smile. "Don't get me wrong, I wanted you from the start, but it could have changed our relationship completely, it could have even scared you off even more than you already were. And while it did suck and was hard waiting 7 more years for you to come around, I began to realize that for us to work out it needed to be when you were ready to make that first move." She took a breath as she ran her thumb up and down his cheek as she finished with emotion. "And god when you did, up till then it was the best moment of my life because I knew we would make it together." She then smirked. "Which as you know I didn't know how hard it would become for us once again to get there, but deep down in my heart I still had hope we would be here like this one day."
He then smirked. "Well, except for the baby part, I'm sure."
She chuckled with a nod. "Now that's a surprise that threw me for a loop to be honest." She then gets more serious. "But one I'm completely thankful for and wouldn't trade for anything."
He shook his head and brought her closer so he could share a sweet kiss with her before replying softly. "Me neither."
They took a moment think about their babies before she finally asked. "And what was your personal question to Catherine?"
He took a breath before replying. "Her and Warrick."
Even though she had heard from Catherine herself there were feelings involved, at least on her side of things, she didn't know if anything more had happened between them, so curious herself, she asked. "So, what did you get?"
"You mean you don't know?"
She shook her head. "I knew everything that you knew, before today that is. Now you know more than I do."
"No, they were never intimate."
"In some ways that's got to suck to not share that type of intimacy with your fantasy."
He took a breath and moved his hand to cup her cheek before replying softly. "Yes, it does."
As she smiled shyly, their moment was interrupted by the Bride and Groom.
"Excuse me, but are we interrupting?"
They both look at Catherine, who was the one that asked that, and Grissom shook his head. "No, what can we do for you?"
Catherine smiled as she looked at Sara. "I was hoping I could steal your husband for a dance."
Sara removed her hands from her husband with a nod and smile as she stepped back. "Steal away but bring him back in one piece."
They all chuckled as Catherine and Grissom started dancing while Sara danced with Vartann.
Once the dances were done and the guests started leaving, which included Sara and Grissom, they headed right to their hotel room after saying goodbye to their twins, who were staying with Greg and Morgan for the night.
They barely got into the room before their lips were one another's as she was backing towards the door to close it. They spent several minutes just kissing while their fingers were moving around one another's bodies and through their hair, then eventually they pull back breathlessly before she turned around and he moved his hand to the zipper of her dress, whispering in her ear while pulling it down. "You looked absolutely stunning today, honey."
She smiled with her eyes closed feeling the closeness from her husband. "I know, you've already said that once before, remember?"
After the dress slid down her body, leaving her in nothing but her undergarments, he turned her back around and cupped her cheek as he looked into her now opened eyes with passion in his. "Yes, but your appearance deserves another compliment, especially right now."
She moved her hands to his suite jacket and started to slide it off his shoulders as she replied with passion in her eyes now. "Now as wonderful as you look at this moment, I need you to be less dressed."
Once the jacket was on the floor, next went his tie, then her hands moved towards the buttons of his dress shirt as he started kissing her again, this time, while their lips were still attached, he was the one walking backwards towards the bed, his shirt finally coming off as they went, along with his pants.
When they finally made it on the bed with nothing but the sheet coving their bodies, they had just finished a very intense, passionate kiss before he pulled back and just looked down at her.
She opened her eyes a moment later when she didn't feel his lips going anywhere else on her skin, then asked with concern as she moved her hand to cup his clean-shaven cheek. "You ok, babe?"
He nodded with a smile. "Yeah, I just wanted to take a moment to look at my hope, my dream come true, my fantasy that became my reality. I love you Sara, and I know it's been said probably a billion times by now, but thank you for waiting for me, for being patient with me."
She ran her thumb up and down his cheek as she whispered. "You were worth the wait, and I love you too. Now kiss me."
He smiled as he lowered himself to her again. "Gladly."
When their lips touched again, they were lost in one another for the rest of the night, both wanting to take advantage of this rare opportunity of being alone with no interruptions.
Hours later
By the time Grissom, who was in nothing but boxers, walked out of the bathroom, Sara was standing out on the balcony, wearing a nice, cozy robe. He grabs his matching robe and slips it on while walking towards the sliding, glass door.
Once he stepped outside, he walks to his wife and wrapped his arms around her before kissing her on the temple, asking softly against it. "You ok?"
She nodded with a smile. "Perfect." They stood there in silence for a few minutes while watching the sunrise, before Sara spoke again after she sighed in content. "You remember the last time we saw the sunrise together, when work or babies weren't involved?"
He chuckled. "It has definitely been a while." He kissed her temple again before asking. "Now the question is, Mrs. Grissom, do you remember the first night, when work wasn't involved, that we saw the sunrise together?"
She smiled brighter as she turned to look at him. "How can I forget one of the best nights of my life?"
Flashback
Early June, 2005
It was the first night they had off together since they became a couple two weeks ago, and after they had dinner, they moved to his bedroom, where he put on a movie and they laid down in bed, cuddling.
As the movie ended, Sara whispered while running her hand up his shirt covered chest to cup his cheek. "Thank you for tonight."
He turned his head with a smile as he replied. "You know our night doesn't have to end just yet."
She raised an eyebrow as she asked. "Oh really? And what do you have in mind?"
He moved their bodies so her back was on the mattress and he was laying on his side then he looked down at her before leaning down to kiss her, which thinking she knew where he wanted to take their night, she tried to deepen the kiss while moving her fingers to the buttons of his shirt, but he pulled back before she could and she asked in confusion once she had her breath back. "What's wrong?"
He shook his head with a smile. "Nothing, but that's not exactly what I had in mind."
"No?"
He shook his head again and kissed her forehead before speaking. "Let's talk."
She chuckled. "You, of all people, want to talk?" After he nodded one more time, she continued. "About what?"
He gets a little more serious. "I want us to get to know one another, because yes, we may have known each other for 7 years, we don't really 'know' each other."
"Well, you know more about me than I do you."
"Exactly." He took a breath as he finished. "And as scary as this is for me, I need you to know me, I want you to truly know me."
Tears started to come into her eyes as she ran her thumb up and down his cheek. "That's all I ever wanted. I want to know everything about you, and no matter what it is you have to tell me, you have nothing to be scared about, I'll still love you."
While he has told her some stuff the last two weeks of their relationship, especially why he was so hesitant about being with her, he never went in too much depth, so he knew if he wanted their bond to deepen before they take that next step into their relationship, he had to be completely honest with her, despite being more scared than he's ever been in his life.
Now seeing the reassurance in her eyes gave him the strength to share his truth, so he took a breath, and she gave him a smile and a kiss on the lips before he settled back down, then they cuddled into each other's arms again before he started speaking, telling her more about himself than anybody ever knew about him.
Before they knew it, it was morning, their first non-work sunrise together, which turned out it wouldn't have been the last. (And not all those times they were talking)
End of Flashback
He raised an eyebrow as he asked. "We didn't even do any..."
She cuts him off as she cups his cheek. "You think my favorite nights with you are only when we are intimate in the physical sense? Because I'll have you know they aren't, us cuddling and talking all night is just as memorable to me as our other moments together, especially for our first time doing that, you opened yourself up more than ever before and that meant more to me than I can ever explain."
He smiled as he ran his thumb up and down her cheek. "Me too. Every night with you, no matter how we spend it, is always a perfect night in my eyes."
She smiled as she leaned towards him to give him a kiss, then after pulling back and ending a yawn, she spoke again. "But now I think we should try to get a little sleep this morning before we pick up the twins."
He nodded in agreement before they share one more kiss, then they head back into the room, took their robes off, crawled into bed and cuddled up to one another instantly.
After one more yawn, Sara spoke one more time. "We might be practically dead on our feet all day, but totally worth it last night."
He chuckled as he moved his hand to hers so he could slip his fingers through hers before replying. "I completely agree. Love you, sleep tight, honey."
"Love you too, babe, and sleep tight as well."
It wasn't very long before they closed their eyes and fell asleep with smiles on their faces.
AN: Thanks for reading and please review. I got one more chapter left to give to this story, which will have a slight time jump, so I hope you'll be prepared for that.
AN#2: I also want to inform those who are wondering about my other story 'More joy than ever before' there will be new chapters coming soon, I have not abandoned it. But considering I had two other stories besides that one active and with limited time as it is, I had to put it on the backburner, so I hope you understand the very slow updates with that one.
Anyways, until next time, I hope you are all being safe out there and thanks again.
