Things For Granted
The air was freezing for early October. Its chill rushed through the open gap of the window, sweeping over him in a trill of icy wind.
Dabi jolted awake. A chill ran through his body as his eyes swiveled around in search for one thing in particular.
Where was she?
The man cocked his head to the side. The blue haze of dawn was starting to bleed through their room. Rather, what was left of their room. They'd found refuge in a small abandoned cabin out in the wilderness near Kyoto. It'd been their safehouse for the past week. Ever since he and the rest of the League had successfully pried Kagome out of the Shie Hassaikai's base.
Dabi sat up on his forearms.
Another chill ran over his body, only that time it was for another reason.
The warmth on the mattress beside him had started to fade. Indicated that she'd left a short time ago. His gaze drifted towards the window at the far side of their shanty quarters.
The thin frame of her silhouette reflected against the blue light of dawn's early morning. Even like this, she still seemed so sickly; so frail. It was a sharp contrast to the fiery disposition she held when they faced each other back at the Summer Camp.
"What are you doing?" He sat up, folding his arm over his knee in the process. They weren't in immediate danger but it'd be best if they played things cautiously from this point. There was still a chance that Chisaki could find them. He was sure that the man was sending every available pawn he had searching for them. Kagome would be his main target. He wanted her back at any cost necessary. It would be up to him to make sure that he didn't get her.
Those had been Shigaraki's orders at least, but he had another reason for keeping her out of Chisaki's reach.
Her features lifted into a soft smile, "Listen." The young woman pressed her index finger to her lips.
Dabi quirked a brow then did as she requested. The light chorus of songbirds reverberated through the woods. They sang softly against the gradual brightening of light across the forest beyond. Their chirps and hymns acting the part of a comforting lullaby.
Kagome closed her eyes, "I hadn't realized how much I missed that sound until now. I heard it every day at the shrine so I never thought anything of it. Now though, it's the most wondrous thing I've heard in a long while. There's so many things that I used to take for granted, you know?"
He wouldn't deny the hard twist that knotted in his chest.
It'd been many months since Kagome had truly been free. Waking up to the sound of songbirds was something none of them really thought about yet this was likely the first time since Overhaul had kidnapped her that she'd heard them.
In truth, part of the blame for her kidnapping fell on his shoulders. He should've held onto her back in Kamino. Back when she'd been reaching for him, before Bakugou had been able to wrench her away from them completely. If he'd just kept his grip on her, then maybe Chisaki wouldn't have ever had the chance to take her in the first place.
Dabi opened his arms to her, "Come on. Leave the window open but get back over here."
Kagome's smile remained soft as she pushed herself off the windowsill. She padded her way towards him. Dabi gently pulled her onto the mattress. He curled his arms about her waist and pressed himself flush against her back.
Kagome braced her palms over his forearms as she sighed in content. He buried his face into the nape of her neck.
"Get some more rest. You're still worn out." Dabi commented quietly.
This couldn't last forever. Eventually they would have to leave this place for somewhere safer—more secure. Until then he would let her enjoy herself. Whether it was through their sex or listening to the sound of birds, he'd let her do as she wished.
Right now, his only job was to see to her wellbeing.
Kagome lifted her head towards his, "Thank you, Dabi." The kindness that reflected in her gaze gave him pause. "For everything."
He didn't respond with words. Dabi leaned forward. He slanted his mouth over hers as he rolled her beneath him.
He wouldn't lose her. Not ever again.
A/N: Just wanted to give a slight update, this snippet was actually one of the early ones that I wrote for the Contradiction series. So rather than just letting it collect dust in an empty discord server, I decided to alter it just a tiny bit and upload it here. I'm currently working on Chapter 13 as we speak but I have a more detailed post on my profile about that project and more. In any case, thanks so much guys! Hopefully I'll get more out to you soon~.
