Breathe

Her crystal blue eyes watched in rapt focus his relaxed face, almost child-like in his dreaming state. An unusual sense of calm sat in the air, as she lay entwined in his arms, her cheeks still salty from the tears she had cried a few hours ago. Sunlight sparkled through a tiny window in the rundown motel room, caressing his skin, highlighting his features. A gasp escaped her lips, a warm feeling erupting through her body, completely swept away.

In the silence, the only noise was the soft rhythmic beat of their hearts in perfect unison. Melded together. She felt so content, at peace, like herself.

His eyelids fluttered open, revealing his matching blue orbs. One hand reached up to clear the sleep from his tired eyes; the other softly drew circles across her back. Her heart tightened in her chest, a strange feeling settling over her. A smile slid across his face and a rare blush spread across her cheeks. He brushed his hand over her cheek softly, and tucked a loose strand of silky dark hair behind her ear.

She couldn't be happier. She leaned against his chest, snuggling deeper into his warm body.

"You feeling better?" he spoke, his voice filling the silence.

"Shhh," she warned, placing a finger over his lips.

His lips gently kissed her fingertip, causing her to giggle.

"We're going to survive this," she whispered finally.

He grinned," Yeah, of course."

She rested her head on his chest and wrapped an arm around his waist. His hot breath wafted over her hair, and his chest rose and fell with every second. She could feel his arm pulling her closer, enveloping her with his body heat. He laid a gentle kiss on her forehead, and placed his chin on top of her head.

She felt vulnerable, but free, intimate. Like there were no secrets, and there didn't need to be.

"This is how it's supposed to be," she suddenly whispered.

"How what's supposed to be?" he responded with an amused smile.

She flushed and buried her face into his shoulder, unresponsive. He laughed and nudged her. "Lexa, how what's supposed to be?"

She took a deep breath and looked up into his clear blue eyes. "This is how love is supposed to be," she replied softly, her face beat red.

His shock was evident in the slight elevation of his brows and the drop of his chin.

"Jesse," she spoke after what seemed like an eternity.

A smile broke out over his face and he leaned in to place a gentle kiss on her lips. A perfect calmness settled over them, the only movement the unison rise and fall of their chests. Breathe.
