Summery: A new friend of one of the YuYu Hakusho boys talks to him. She tries to understand his reason for smiling when he hasn't had the best of lives. By the end of the poem she reaches her conclusion, and makes him a promise.
How Can You Smile?

I see the way you smile,
The way you act so kind,
And I can't keep myself from wondering,
"What is going through his mind?"
I saw it deep into your green eyes.
That you've had a long hard life.
I've seen it a few times, and
It looked like you just lost a fight.
I saw so much pain, and so much hurt
And I just can't figure out why
You smile the way you smile when
It's just a cover-up, a lie.
I wanted to ask you so many things
Like, "What happened in the past",
"Why do you smile,?" and
"How long do you think your lie can last?"
And then I looked around at your friends
Though they weren't as good they were smiling too
Your closest friend, though, wasn't.
A short black haired demon only, what? Four foot two?
At the time, I thought your friend smart,
Not trying to hide how he really felt.
Then I saw you fight one day,
And your kind smile started to melt.
I was scared, and I couldn't move.
That look on your face and in your eyes
It was painful to look at, and yet
It kind of hade me mesmerized.
You killed your enemy,
One, I would venture to guess
That you've wanted to kill
For a year at least, and no less.
I later heard the story
Of him bribing you with your mothers life,
And I began to understand your smile.
This new knowledge was shedding some light.
You smile for many reasons.
Now I can see why and how.
You truly are an intelligent one.
To not dwell in the past and live in the here and now.
One day, my red haired friend,
I hope to find my own way.
To always smile and live in the present,
And the present, Kurama, Is where I'll stay
