*Baileywick's POV*
I was sent along with two guards from the castle to go pick up Queen Miranda and Princess Sofia and bring the rest of their belongings to the castle. In the months leading up to the wedding, Sofia and the twins got to know each other a little better. I also got to know the newest additions to the royal family, and I found Sofia to be quite charming. She impressed me whenever I saw her and I knew my jaw dropped when it was revealed Sofia was turning nine on her birthday. I found out from Miranda that if Sofia was given a good reason to wear a dress she would, otherwise she'd prefer to be in pants and a tunic. So Sofia's closet was half dresses and half suit combinations with a small section for common clothes.
The couple months leading up to the wedding, Sofia quickly became a castle staff favorite as she was a quiet type and had taken to helping them out. Especially Violet who seemed to hang with Sofia the most. I had asked Violet about her reasoning and she told me that Sofia was the one to walk her back to the castle that one day. I smiled because Violet finally found a friend and I made it so that Violet would be Sofia's main handmaiden.
When the twins and Sofia met, I assumed that Sofia would click more with James than Amber, but I was wrong. Sofia seemed to open up a little with Amber as the two of them found a common ground but with James, she held him at a distance. A distance that wasn't helped by James playing a prank on her during her birthday. Either way, Sofia was accepted into the inner workings of the castle.
Back to picking up the newest Princess and Queen, the village children seemed upset. Sofia didn't pay any attention to them at all and only waved to the adults. Once we were away from the village, Sofia smiled and started chatting with the two guards who amused her and talked with her. Then when we arrived at the castle, there was a huge crowd waiting to see the newest additions to the royal family. Most were the nobles of the kingdom and the other royalty were the king and queen of Wei Ling and Khaldune.
I was watching the reactions and most were good. Sofia seemed to not like really big crowds but she held a polite smile. She didn't wave, just kinda stared at the people. Miranda had a hand on Sofia's shoulder and once the formalities were over, the formalities just introducing Sofia to the nobility of the kingdom, I gave Sofia a tour of the castle. We were about halfway when Lily called my name.
"Yes Lily?" I said.
"Shouldn't you slow down just a wee bit? The princess does have shorter legs than you." she said politely.
I was shocked and turned to Sofia to see her right on my heels.
"Do you want a break? I tend to walk fast and the castle isn't going anywhere." I said.
"Nope. I find it fun that someone else can walk as fast as I can." she said.
She didn't seem to mind so I resumed my pace and continued the tour. I remembered that she does like to eat more so I introduced her to Chef Andre and told him that she ate more than most. The two of them hit it off when Sofia told him that the stew he was making was a bit imbalanced and suggested adding some citrus to it since it was a little salty. I reminded Sofia of the tour and she grinned sheepishly.
"Sorry Baileywick." she said, "I'll see you later Chef Andre."
"See you later princess." he said.
"Come along now, we have one more stop." I said.
She followed along while she was munching away at an apple. I showed her to her room and she smiled at it.
"It's so big." she muttered.
"It's a normal princess suite." I commented.
"Am I able to modify the room to my tastes or is it to remain this way?" she asked.
"Yes, you may modify the room as long as you clear it with the castle architects and builders. Also, I was made aware of your preferences for wearing a tunic and pants rather than a dress." I said.
"Yes sir. I do prefer a tunic and pants rather than a dress, but I will wear a dress if I must. If it is to a semi-formal event, meaning one that will only require the presence, and it is possible, I would rather wear a prince's style of clothing. If not, I would like a good reason as to why I must wear the dress. I do not complain much and if given a reason, I do not mind. However, if I must wear a dress all the time, I would like to have dresses that I can move freely in." she said.
I smiled and showed her the closet. She smiled.
"I can work with this." she said.
"Now, if you need anything at all, any time of day, ring the bell." I said as I demonstrated.
Violet came running, and had a mischievous smirk, "Yes mum, you rang?"
"Hi Vi." Sofia said.
"Hello Sof." she said.
"I don't need anything that I can think of at the moment." she said.
I bowed and Violet and I exited her room to let her get settled. Of course I did tell her the time in which she needed to be down in the dining room for dinner. Next on the list of business, I needed to start filling out Sofia's enrollment to Royal Prep. When I started, I realized that I needed Miranda's help and would be more fit to fill out the form than I as I barely knew anything about the young princess other than she's really smart and crafty.
"Excuse me." I said to get her attention.
"Yes Baileywick." she said.
"I need some help filling out these enrollment papers for Royal Prep for Sofia." I said.
"Ah." she said with a small smile, "The best person to ask to fill this out is Sofia herself. I may have raised her, but even after she started helping me with the bills, she does things that I know she didn't tell me. I know as much as she was willing to tell me."
So we sat down and got to work on the papers while Violet went to get Sofia. I learned more about the newest princess. Sofia's full name is very pretty, Sofia Saoirse Roric. I knew Sofia was nine years old and her birthday is October 6, but her height was incredible. At nine years old she was already five feet tall. Then I noticed that Miranda didn't say anything about Sofia's birth father.
"What about her birth father?" I asked when I saw Miranda put down Roland as Sofia's father.
"Her biological father was a douche and only cared about having an heir, a boy, to carry on his legacy. A legacy none will know except his crew. He walked out on me the week after I had Sofia with divorce papers, a revocation of his parental rights, and a note explaining why he walked out. I never showed Sofia the note as he had blamed me for not being able to produce an heir. Blamed me for the problems I had during my pregnancy with Sofia. He blamed me for not being able to produce another child as it would be deadly for either me, the child, or both. Then he upped and left saying that he was going to captain his old ship as they had been in Enchancia for refueling and was going to sail to a different kingdom." Miranda said.
"I'm sorry for asking." I said as I could tell that it was painful.
"It's alright, you didn't know. I wouldn't bring it up with Sofia though. It might be painful for me to talk about nor am I comfortable talking about it to those who don't ask, but Sofia gets very protective of me. If she brings up the topic, let her. She's a sweetheart except for when someone insults me. Now, I assume part of your duty is to watch and take care of the children, correct?" she said.
I nodded and didn't say anything because there was an edge in her voice.
"If I catch anyone in this castle or otherwise, whether that be through hearing or seeing myself, abusing the fact that Sofia does not complain when asked to do something, they answer to me. Including any nobility or royalty. She's never complained from what I know and she's always picked up the slack when I couldn't. She's the reason why the shop and our cabin look so good without the heavy payments." she said.
I nodded but before we could chat a little more, a knock sounded on the door and I looked up to see Sofia standing there.
"You wanted to see me?" she said.
"Yes, I'd like for you to answer these questions. They're for your enrollment into Royal Prep." Miranda said.
"Okay Mom. I guess it'd be nice to see how school is." Sofia said.
"Wait, you haven't gone to school?" I asked.
She seemed so well read.
"Well, I tested out of school when I was five since I found it too easy." she said.
"Oh." was all I could say to that.
She filled out the rest of the paperwork with her hobbies and activities. She then listed her achievements and experiences. My eyes widened when she put down that she won the Terrell Circuit on Blackjack. Her activities of hunting, acrobatics, parkouring, carpentry, metalworking, blacksmithing, taking care of animals, swimming, climbing, explained her build. It was going to be an interesting debut ball because Sofia was quite different from any princess we knew.
*Fauna's POV*
Today was a good day because we were expecting an enrollment paper from the Kingdom of Enchancia as they had a new princess. King Roland II had married a village cobbler named Miranda and adopted a new daughter, Sofia, making them the newest addition to the royal lineup in Enchancia. I was expecting the file anytime soon. As if thinking about it, the necessary papers appeared on my desk. I was excited because Sofia didn't seem like many princesses, actually more prince-like in nature than princess. She had a very pretty name meaning freedom in wisdom. Then I looked at her age in comparison to her height.
"Flora, Merryweather, come look at this." I said.
"Fauna? What is it?" Flora asked.
Merryweather looked concerned too.
"Look, it seems Sofia is quite tall for her age." I said.
"Oh my, she has quite the list of achievements." Flora said.
"Damn, she's the one to tame Blackjack?"
"We might have to evaluate her."
"She's definitely more experienced, but let's see how she does in classes."
"I approve of her. I think she might be the funnest to watch."
"I would like to see what she can do with a sword."
"Merryweather!"
"What? I'd also like to see how she does with a musical instrument."
"Just because it'd be interesting to see, doesn't mean you have to see it."
"That's no fun Flora."
"Ladies, perhaps we could show her all the electives and see how she does in them. Or the afterschool events." I said.
"Good idea Fauna." they said.
And so, with a new week starting, we informed the teachers that they would have a new student in their class. Then on Monday, the fun began as the students began arriving. We were in our tiny forms and I spotted Sofia first. Right away I could tell that her portfolio didn't disappoint. She was quite tall for her age. She had short light brown hair that looked to have a bit of red in it and blue green eyes. She wasn't wearing a gown and instead wearing a prince's attire. She also had something on underneath her clothes and being a magical creature, I could sense that she had the Amulet of Avalor. I'm a fairy, what do you expect? We were brought up on the tales of the Amulet. An ancient warlock discovered the ability to create a magical object that granted a person many wishes, but had a fail safe. Over the years, the Amulet chose people who had pure hearts, but the ones who abused the powers were cursed. Then the Amulet disappeared for centuries before reappearing in a far away kingdom. Rumors have it that whomever wore the Amulet that in times of need, a person would appear to help. Rumors that were never proven. Then the Amulet disappeared again but this time only for a short while before showing up in the kingdom of Avalor. Hence the name the Amulet of Avalor. However, this go round after the disappearance of Princess Elena, the Amulet seemed to choose princesses. No one knew why but many princesses failed the tests of the Amulet. It meant that Sofia will be called upon by the Amulet since the Amulet chose her. Anyway, back to Sofia's first day at Royal Prep.
"Welcome to Royal Prep dear." I said.
She looked right at me, which was surprising since I was expecting her to be a little confused. Then I saw the feather and I had to use all my power not to gasp out loud. Somehow she managed to get Maleficent's approval, which meant she'd been to Auroria.
"Good Morning ladies. My name is Sofia." she said and it helped to knock me out of my surprised stupor.
"I'm Flora."
"I'm Merryweather."
"And I am Fauna." I said.
"We are the Headmistresses of Royal Prep." we said together.
She smiled at us and we gave her a tour of the school and a rundown of the general rules and whatnot. She was so quiet at times that we actually had to look to see if she was still following us. I took her to her first class.
"Class, we have a new student today. Her name is Sofia." I said.
"Good morning." the class said one by one as they either bowed or curtsied.
Sofia bowed back, "Good morning everyone."
She was doing well for her first day. She seemed to get along with a majority of the others, at least until lunch when she came back later than everyone and it seemed like she had been wet since her hair was damp but her clothes were somewhat dry. She was also late for class and I got the feeling she was never late so I went to see what was wrong.
"Sofia?" I said.
She froze before looking at me with a blank look.
"Are you alright dear? You're late." I asked.
"Fine." she said curtly.
"Would you like to come with me to my office to talk?" I asked.
She shrugged and I took that as a yes, so I led her to my office where she sat down on a chair.
"Now, Sofia, what happened?" I asked.
Sofia seemed a little mad, "Some stuck up prince decided that only princes should wear pants and a shirt and that princesses always wore dresses so he flipped my lunch to make my stuff messy. Then James decided it would be fun to trick me into riding the enchanted swing set that flung me into the fountain. Prince Zandar was nice as he helped me out of the fountain. Since I didn't get lunch as the cafeteria closed by the time I was able to get away, I decided to go hunt for lunch. I caught a couple lizards and cooked them to eat. I helped a baby bird who had been blown out of its nest as I cleaned up in the river. I knew that the river wasn't going to affect anything. When I was done, I realized that the school bell had rung and I was late. So I ran over."
"I will have you know that pranks such as those are not permitted. Do you remember what the other prince looked like?" I asked.
"Black hair, green eyes. Wearing a black jacket, brown vest, white shirt, red tie, and khaki pants with dress shoes." she said.
Hugo.
"If it is of any assurance, I will send a note to each parent telling them of their child's behavior as well as discussing the incident with the two princes in question. Along with a commendation to Zandar's parents for helping a student." I said.
"Thanks Ms. Fauna." she said.
"Head on to your next class dear, I will let your teacher know where you were during his period." I said.
"Okay." she said.
She ran off to her class and after doing exactly as I said I would do, I kept an eye on her the rest of the day. She seemed to surpass her peers in most of the subjects and in the ones where she was somewhat confused, she picked up quite quickly. She definitely lived up to being a quick learner.
*Baileywick's POV*
I was waiting for the kids to come home for school and Miranda was with me. When the carriage landed, Sofia was the first out of the carriage. I greeted her and the other two but Sofia gave a curt greeting. I was about to reprimand her for it but Miranda put a hand on my shoulder.
"Baileywick, don't. I'll take care of it." she said.
James ran right by without a greeting and seemed abnormally stompy. Amber was the only one left in front of us.
"Good Afternoon Baileywick, mom." she said.
"Amber, do you know what happened at school?" Miranda asked.
"Somewhat. Hugo, another prince, and James decided to prank Sofia. Hugo told her that only princes were allowed to wear shirts and pants in front of the entire school at lunch and flipped her lunch all over her. Then we were let out to recess where James tricked her into riding the Enchanted Swing Set, a swing set that's enchanted to make the rider fly off at the highest point. Luckily Sofia landed in the fountain. I wanted to help her out but I was too far away. Zandar, the prince of Tangu, helped her out. Once she was out, she walked off into the forest. She was supposed to be with me in botany today but apparently she was with Ms. Fauna, one of the Headmistresses. She was in dance class after looking significantly calmer but James and Hugo were called to the Headmistress' office. So I assume that Sofia told Ms. Fauna what happened." Amber said.
I sighed. Roland had tried to instill that bullying has no place in life, but unfortunately James seemed to ignore it. I'm afraid that it would take more for James to sing a different tone. Fortunately, it was the weekend and on a much lighter note, Sofia had been chatting with all the staff. I've tried to get her to stop helping out but she just kept at it in a different place. She's very quickly become a staff favorite, same with Miranda. Sofia however, there's only two people in the castle that can go in her room without her being in it, besides her mother of course, and those two people are Violet and I. Even though I somehow have the special privilege to be in her room without her in it, I very rarely go in it. It is her private area and if she doesn't want anyone in it, I'll respect it. The few times I've been in it in the time Sofia moved in, it's been spotless.
I've noticed that the castle staff have been getting around the castle faster than I am and that's saying something. I wasn't complaining since they've been getting tasks done quicker and more efficiently, but it was curious.
"Baileywick?" Sofia called out.
"Yes Sofia?" I said.
"What are you thinking about?"
"Well, I was thinking about how the staff is getting around quicker than I am. Not that I'm complaining, but I'd like to know how."
She giggles, "Come on I'll show you. I bet they're using the shortcuts I found."
Intrigued, I followed her and low and behold, there were shortcuts. Each were labeled with where each one led to. I will admit exaggerating a little because every little offended noise I made, resulted in Sofia giggling and I full on pouted to see what would happen and Sofia let out a full laugh. A laugh that I wanted to bring out more often and if that meant acting a little childish and out of character, so be it. After figuring out the shortcuts, and being completely amused when the castle staff were put out, I picked up planning Sofia's debut ball again.
Thankfully, there were no more school incidents, at least that I know of, and the week leading up to the ball was smooth. The most shocking of all was the friendship that seemed to be struck up was Sofia and Cedric's friendship. Cedric was actually smiling at the girl and the girl was grinning at him. I waited to see what would happen as Cedric had the reputation of being a poor wizard. I had to hold a gasp because Cedric performed perfectly for Sofia and Sofia had giggled and clapped. Cedric had the softest grin on his face that I have ever seen in the past twenty years. Damn I just aged myself, I remembered Cedric, Cordelia whose Cedric's older sister, Roland, and Matilda or Tilly Roland's older sister running around playing as ten year olds. My father had retired and passed the mantle to me quite early. It was nice, though now seeing Cedric smile in a way that he hadn't since he was twelve, made me realize that I fell into the bandwagon that he was a horrible sorcerer in comparison to his relatives. Cordelia being one to pick up on spells much easier than Cedric, his mother Winnifred was known to be a powerful witch, and of course his father, the previous Royal Sorcerer Goodwin the Great.
Sofia's debut ball was magnificent. It was filled with twinkling lights and the crystals that were around the room were reflecting the light in different ways. It made the dresses, even Sofia was in a dress, light up and the suits sparkled. I honestly enjoyed it and after a couple hours, I saw that Sofia had actually snuck away. Then I found her again surrounded by a few boys from the village.
"Come on, dance with us." one boy said.
"I already said no. Now leave me alone." Sofia said.
"Why?" another said.
"Because you aren't the one I want to dance with." Sofia said.
Just as I was about to go over there, one of the princes - Zandar I believe - came over.
"Princess, care to dance?" he asked kindly.
"Thank you Prince Zandar." Sofia said.
I smiled as Sofia was led to dance with Zandar. The group of boys were put out that Sofia didn't want to dance with them.
It looked like fun and the party soon wound to a close with many nobles and royalty greeting Sofia and thanking her for the party before departing. Once that party was done, I focused on making sure that the Royal Family could attend the Flying Derby race that week.
AN: To those who want Sofia to have a love interest in this story, she won't have one. The closest would be Zandar since he was one of the first people to help Sofia adjust.
I have a plan for Luna and she'll be coming in during season 1. Sofia does have the birds though, Mia and Robin to help and she's quite fond of those two. I just haven't written them in yet.
Thanks for reading and hope you enjoyed the chapter. ~Immortalshark
