I do not own Harry Potter.

Dear Mum and Dad,

Remember Tom Riddle's diary I told you about? I figured out how to work it. It was sort of an accident, my bag broke during the afternoon, and my ink broke over all of my books, including the diary. Except when I examined it again tonight, it was completely dry. Not a trace of ink.

I dropped a blot of ink onto a page, and it vanished into the paper. I introduced myself, and Tom Riddle wrote back. I asked him if he knew anything about the Chamber of Secrets, and he said that it was opened during his time at Hogwarts. He was the one who caught the person who did it last time. I asked him who it was, and he asked me if I would go inside his memory of it.

I was pitched headfirst into the diary on a page half way through June. I landed in the headmaster's office, Professor Dibbit. Tom Riddle came in and asked if he could stay at Hogwarts over the summer, otherwise he would go to a muggle orphanage. Except the school was about to be closed due to the attacks. A girl had been killed, just as Malfoy said.

Riddle met Professor Dumbledore after he left the headmaster. He told him to go to bed, that it wasn't safe to be wandering around. Riddle then went to the dungeons where he cornered Hagrid. It was Hagrid who opened the Chamber of Secrets fifty years ago! Riddle said that he didn't think that Hagrid meant to hurt anyone, but this huge spider like thing escaped. That was the end of the memory.

Ron was indignant about Riddle squealing on Hagrid, but the monster had killed someone. Hermione hopes he got the wrong person, but Ron doesn't think it likely that there was more than one monster at the time. As for me, after Fluffy and Norbert, I don't have a hard time believing that Hagrid could have let the monster out. However, I don't believe for a second that he ever meant to hurt anyone, and I don't think it's him this time.

We thought about going to ask Hagrid about it but decided to wait and see if there is another attack.

Love,

Harry

Dear Harry,

I agree with Ron. What a snitch! I don't believe for a second Hagrid opened the chamber either time! He may have an affinity for monsters, but he wouldn't be stupid enough to open a chamber designed to kill.

Well, he did try to raise a dragon in his hut.

Be quiet, James! He got rid of it when it counted.

I think you're right not to talk to Hagrid about it yet. But Hagrid aside, I don't like the idea of that diary. There's only one thing I know of that can show you another person's memories, and that's a pensieve. But that works very specifically, and nothing like how you described the diary. It could be nothing, it could be something. But it's not usually a good idea to trust an inanimate object that can think for itself.

Don't use it again, Harry, and be careful.

Love,

Dad and Mum

Dear Dad and Mum,

You won't have to worry about me using the diary again. All of my belongings were ransacked today and only Riddle's diary was taken. Only a Gryffindor could have stolen it, as nobody else knows our password.

Harry

Dear Mum and Dad,

I heard the voice again today. We were on our way down to the quidditch pitch for our match against Hufflepuff. My only consolation was that everyone was outside to watch the match. But I'd forgotten… Hermione had gone to the library to check something. When I said I had heard the voice, she said she had understood something and went to the library to make sure.

McGonagall cancelled the match and took Ron and I to the hospital wing. Hermione and a Ravenclaw prefect had both been petrified.

A bunch of new rules have been added, and McGonagall admitted that the school was likely to be closed unless the person responsible is caught.

Ron and I are going to take the invisibility cloak and go talk to Hagrid tonight.

Love,

Harry

Dear Mum and Dad,

Hagrid's gone. Dumbledore's gone!

When we got to Hagrid's hut, he seemed nervous, but before we could ask questions, Dumbledore and Cornelius Fudge arrived. Hagrid says he never opened the Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore said Hagrid has his complete confidence. But Fudge says he has to take him to Azkaban anyway.

Just then Lucius Malfoy arrived. He said that all twelve governors had signed an order for Dumbledore to step aside. Fudge said it was the last thing we needed, Hagrid said Malfoy must have blackmailed most of them, but Dumbledore agreed to step down.

But he said that he will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to him, and that help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.

Hagrid departed with last words too, telling Ron and I to follow the spiders if we wanted to find out some stuff.

Things really couldn't be worse. Ron says there will be an attack a day with Dumbledore gone.
